Serzone and liver

Common Questions and Answers about Serzone and liver

serzone

Im scared to take my prescription because my doctor said its a very old med and people used to have liver failure and problems, and die from it, but she said it works significantly well with people like me who have panic, depression, and social anxiety......I've had a bad experience with a few antidepressants before , but they were SSRI's and Serzone is supposedly in a totally different class of meds and works differntly than SSRI's, but im scared to death to try any more.....
Though I am seeking advice from my doc I am wondering if anyone has additional insight on how to slowly come off Serzone. I am just beginning a cleanse/detox for health reasons and would like to benefit fully from it knowing I'm not adding toxins to my liver. Not to mention, it's just time. Just an FYI for anyone interested in Serzone, I had tried just about every anti-depressant on the market before I found Serzone.
I'm seriously thinking of switching from Zoloft to Serzone and wondering if anyone has dealt with weight gain as a side-effect.
My psychiatrist practices geriatric psychiatry and only uses this med for patients who have stopped eating since it makes most people want to eat. I thought serzone was taken off the market for causing liver disease, although the generic is still available. Maybe it's back. An alternative to serzone is wellbutrin.
I was taking Paxil but was afraid of the weight gain etc. I did some research on the serzone and it looked pretty good-the side effects didn't seem to be much. But I just feel blah. Like I don't want to do anything-no motivation whatsoever. That may just be because it hasn't started working yet, but i don't really know. I originally started the Paxil for social anxiety (also panic)-is the serzone effective for this. Should i give it a little longer, or what?
I will be discussing this issue with my physician, but is there any additional info concerning this latest warning about Serzone and liver failure? How serious does an issue have to be in order for a warning like this to be issued?
For one and a half years, I have been taking 600mgs per day of Serzone. I asked my doctor and liver specialist if it would adversly affect my liver and was told no and to keep taking it. Recently my doctor contacted me about an abnormal liver funtion test. Seems it was elevated 8 points higher than normal, and said he would repeat the test soon. Yesterday on tv I saw a commercial to call some law firm if you have taken or are taking Serzone as it can cause liver failure.
31 My husband has been on many drugs for depression and nothing seems to work. He is on serzone and trazadone now, is this combo ok for someone with liver problems? He's been on paxil, wellbutrin, prozac and zoloft. His dosage now is 150mg serzone am and pm, and 150 mg trazadone at night. We just want something that works, he is very depressed and hates the world and everyone. What works? Posted by HFHS.

It is difficult to ascertain whether it could be the serzone or not. Serzone can cause liver damage but usually would see a elevation of the AST/ALT 3 times the normal levels. You said in your post that these levels are normal. The iron levels may be elevated for a number of reasons which include anemia, infection, inflammatory processes, hemochromatosis to name a few. The iron level also varies according to which test that they ran. Ferritin levels which for a female is 5-100 ug/L.
Have they suspected gastritis and suggested a 72 hour clear liquid diet to see if it would calm down? I once had a liver hemiangioma that later didn't show in a subsequent ultrasound. The only cause I thought later that might have been was I was taking generic serzone (since they took the name brand off the market for liver damage), but I'm not sure if the medicine I tooke was why it happened. It was said to be unusual to have one on my liver by a doctor, but not harmful.
_ Dear Sherril: I appreciate your questions and your concerns.
Posted By Sherril on February 06, 1999 at 13:21:33: Hi, I am 40 years old, 5' 7", 165 #'s. I just had a liver function test, as I am currently taking Serzone, 300 mgs. for depression. The test came back w/ AST @ 41, & ALT @ 92. I took Serzone 3 years ago because I was addicted to coccaine, for 2 years(after my painful divorce). When I was young I experimented with all substances around.I have been clean ever since except for 5- 8 beers or glasses of wine.
I am a smoker but never consume alcohol. A previous ct scan indicated a fatty liver and several small hepatic cysts. I also have a peripelvic cyst in the left kidney that the result of a recent ultrasound indicated it was somewhat larger than a previous test in Oct. 98. I am on the following meds at this time: 17mg Triamcinolone, 30 mg Prevacid,200 mg Colace, 2 tsp. Carafate, 75 mg. Plavix and 3000 mg Tylenol and Atacand for high blood pressure.

I was taken off 250 mg of Serzone just a few days ago.
As a follow up to a previous question posted yesterday, I received the results of the most recent GGT dated 3/19/99 just two days after the last one and it was 774 from 685. It seems to be rising quite rapidly. I am off the serzone and was wondering what your opinion was regarding whether or not serzone could be the culprit. Also, my tylenol levels were normal. Thank you, Joan D. Dear Dr. I am a 49 yr. old female with SLE diagnosed in 1995.
, she told my psychiatrist and now wants to me to take freakin Serzone which is like banned in other countries, because people got liver disease from taking it. Im freaked out about everything i dont know what to do anymore.I want to be normal again like i was before i went in there.......for my kids thats all i want. Please pray for me :( It doesnt seem like Therapy/Meds is working for me) Should i stop going altogether??? Are these meds gonna just make me worse and worse?
I am suffering from depression but I have Long Qt and am obese , diabetic and have svt's my GP has been unable to find any medication that is suitable - do you have any suggestions?
However it was re-introduced under its generic called Nefazodone and is sold in the US again. I don't think Serzone has any heart side effects. Given your situation, it might be worth a try even with the risk of the liver issues. The liver issues can always be monitored.
my thyriod is normal, liver normal, SEVERE sleep apnea (109 dist/hour and am on CPAP), *enlarged right ventricle, Pseudocoarctation of the Aorta* (diagonsed with CT scan with iodine), and Fybromyalgia (by my rheumitologist). In 2005 i had a serious staph infection under my RT kneecap. I was very close to blood piosoning and/or loosing my leg/life. during the first operation i experianced complete respritory failure after the breathing tube was pulled.
One of the most obvious is that increased cortisol impairs the development and regeneration of the liver, kidney and muscles, as well as impairing linear growth. Yet, learning that even one parent was given this information would be surprising. PROZAC: PANACEA OR PANDORA?
The one that worked OK for me was serzone but that was pulled from the market due to liver damage. It relaxed me and helped with anxiety issues. I had heard about the liver issues before it was pulled from the market so I started to wean off it myself. I was only on it 6 months so it wasn't too bad, then I started to see a counselor and started cognitive behavior therapy.
I have been on SSRIs on and off for last six years for GAD and depression ... None of them has really helped me ... I went to my doc and he prescribed me Luvox ... that was the only one I have not tried ... Now the problem is I have extreme fear of taking SSRis due to horrible stories that I have heard that they may cause permanent sexual dysfunction also known as PSSD ... For that reason I am going to request my doc to prescribe me either TCA or MOAI ...
The centers of my eyes felt like they were jumping, it was the weirdest thing I ever felt, I resumed back to the 200mg a day on day 6 and 7 and I felt better again like I am now - I PRAY my Liver tests are alsways ok, but I PRAY I can always take this med, or my life is in Serious Trouble, for me maybe not for you or others, I cannot handle the slightest reduction.
But then I read about how bad the medication was on the liver so I freaked and quit taking that, too. It will get better. I'm glad you're not trying to do it alone. Without my family by my side I don't think I'd still be here today. See your doc to make sure that it's not depression. I didn't feel depressed until I realized I had quit taking showers and changing clothes.
SEEM TO WOOK GOOD,ONLY HAD IT A WEEK.HANG IN THERE AND KEEP ON YOUR DOCTOR TO TRY OTHER STUFF.I TOOK SERZONE FOR 2 YEAR WORKED GOOD BUT THEN THEY CAME OUT AND SAID IT CAN DAMAGE YOUR LIVER SO HE TOOK ME OFF IT.I'V HAD A HARD TIME FINDING SOMETHING THAT WORKS WITHOUT SIDE EFFECTS.HE GAVE ME WELBURTIN.I DON'T LIKE IT MAKES ME NERVOUS.KEEP THE FAITH THER SOMETHING OUT THERE THAT WILL WORK FOR YOU.IT JUST TAKES TIME AND A CARING DOCTOR.
By the way did you all know that Milk Thistle cleanses the liver and promotes healthier liver tissue. My son did get his promotion to green belt in Tae Kwon Do earlier. He is such inspiration for me. Talk about being an emotional basket case. This is really going to suck for the next few days isnt it? Was my usage of 60mg-100mg of Lorcet a day a lot? What can I expect in the next 72 hours. I am 15 hours behind you Chezz.
There are known liver side effects for Serzone though and must be carefully considered with current liver function + follow liver functions while on it.
I have been taking Serzone 200mg a day for 4 and 1/2 years, and desire so bad to be off of it, and everytime I ever withdrew it a little bit even, I feel horrible by the 4th day. I am concerned about my liver also. How did you feel cutting it down ?
I currently was taking Serzone along with Pamalor until I became very ill, just last night and after some testing, was told the Serzone had caused some liver disfunctions. Am waiting at this time (Sat.May ,24,1997) to see my phsciatrist who will not be back in office until ttuesday,27th. Finally, to get to the point, do you think this condition could be caused by some of these medications, and could you suggest any other type of specialist to get the chemical imbalance straightened out.
