Common Questions and Answers about Seroquel weight gain metabolism

seroquel

Avatar f tn Has anyone in here experienced an extreme amount of weight gain when on Seroquel XR? I was overweight before but it seemed like I really can't keep a hold on my weight. It just keeps climbing. Help!!
1134609 tn?1269272200 The control group was given the same dose of Seroquel, but without the diet and exercise. The latter group gained four pound. So, my question is this; does Seroquel cause weight gain because it has such and impact on your metabolism or is it because of the increase cravings for junk food? Or is a combination that one can control?
Avatar n tn These medications did not cause me to overeat but, I believe that these drugs caused my metabolism to slow down and that is what caused the weight gain. I have found that when I stopped taking these meds that it took 8 to 10 months before I was able to see significant weight loss (and for my metabolism to readjust itself. I have always had a very healthy diet and get plenty of exercise even while on those antipsychotic drugs.
Avatar n tn My doc took me off Seroquel because he said it can cause weight gain. I would ask your doc which drug is causing it. When weight gain is fast & sudden, my G.I. doctor said the #1 cause is medication. But Lithium can cause your thyroid to get out of whack and you can gain weight if it's sluggish. You may want to have the thyriod funtion checked as well. If the thyroid is OK.
Avatar f tn I recently read an article stating that Seroquel can cause up to a 67% weight gain and Zyprexa up 87% weight gain. Several psychiatrists have told me they have seen a 80lb and a 100lb weight gain. One article talked about changing the internal structure of the cell. I read another that pointed out the rapidly of the weight gain, hypercholesterolemia and development of diabetes. I still have not found a solution for me.
Avatar f tn Certain medical disorders or medications can cause weight gain/inability to lose.. You might talk to your doctor to see if there are alternative meds you can take that might control you disorders, without causing weight gain. In my case, I have hypothyroidism, which slows my metabolism -- if my thyroid levels aren't right, there's no way I can lose weight, because thyroid controls metabolism.....
Avatar n tn I just started the Latuda, I don't think that has caused my weight gain. I think it's just the quitting smoking. I need to speed up my metabolism. I go to the gym atleast 4 times a week and have a great diet. I just keep gaining and I'm so frustrated. I have gone from a healthy 130 pounds up to 153 as of today. No wonder I'm cycling and feeling depressed! Thank you so much for the advice and the interaction warning, I appreciated it.
Avatar m tn I have looked into these types of Meds to counteract the weight gain and I am interested in seeing how it would help. I don't have any issue with taking another med, especially if it were to stop the weight gain.. it's a serious problem as for me the ones that don't make you gain weight are never effective! I am tall and used to be naturally slim, I could eat what I want but now I don't seem to eat much at all and have still put on weight, I exercise on a treadmill asawell.
Avatar m tn I still have some of the weight gain from when I was on seroquel because my metabolism has slowed down and the lack of exercise I did while on it took a told on my muscles and I lost a lot of muscle strength, and so far have been to tired to really try to work out and get back into shape. Sometimes it seems to be a vicious cycle. Its quite possible that the things you are feeling right now aren't because of withdrawal, but just because you don't have that medication support you had.
447130 tn?1225470866 I was on Seroquel 300mg a night for sleep. I gained 30 pounds in 3 months.I stopped the Seroquel 2 weeks ago. I did get hungry at night and sometimes had a snack but I hired a personal trainer and have been working 4 days a week for a straight hour of cardio style weight lifting (my heart rate maintains at 165 the whole hour) plus I have to do an hour of cardio everyday on top of the training. I have done this for 6 weeks now and have lost 2 pounds.
Avatar n tn Yes Seroquel like all currently available antipsychotics can cause weight gain and the potential of diabetes. I did gain weight on Seroquel as I did with other antipsychotics. You could ask your doctor about a specific diet that would help you cut back sugar and carbohydrates and help reduce weight and regular exercise is essential as well.
Avatar f tn Abilify, risperadol (sp), zyprexa, and they either made me really twitchy, gain tons of weight, or gave me that horrible restless feeling (name of which I can't remember). I've been on so many meds I had trouble remembering them all when my doc asked. She recommended latuda, gave me a bunch of samples, but I have a way high deductible on non generics.
Avatar f tn I am 54 yrs old now and I weight 200lbs, am on Lithium 900mg and Seroquel 300 mg and Paxil. All my doctors have denied weight gain from the medications and I do not understand that. This stuff just comes on like majic. When I started the Seroquel I immediately gained 20 lbs. YIKES!!! I admit I do not exercise like I used to before I was diagnosed. I am lucky to eat one meal a;day. Just not hungery. I am sure if I got on some exercise plan along with better eatting I could work my *** off.
Avatar m tn seroquel is a nasty drug w.r.t. weight gain; although it was my Godsend for me. i read once that even if you stop it your body metabolism doesn't return to your original state. whether this is true or not you have to give it time to be able to notice a real change. i have gained 60 pounds on it alone although my dose is only 100mg. Apparently it increases the tryglesrides and makes me feeling starved all the time.
1397290 tn?1357777871 When I first went into treatment for my anorexia and started eating my metabolism went crazy. I was eating 3 'normal' meals a day and 3 resourse snacks (which were high calorie condensed snacks, like ensure shakes), then when I went to bed I was hooked up to tube feeding and they had to put me on transport, meaning I couldn't walk anywhere which would burn calories, becasue I could not gain weight.
Avatar f tn I take Seroquel xr and Lithium. The Seroquel xr for about two and a half months. The Lithium for over ten years. The Lithium, I do not believe it causes weight gain. Seroquel xr, yes. It, so far is the best antipsychotic I have ever taken, we'll see as the time goes on. I gained about fifteen pounds at first on Seroquel xr! I cut out most colas, I never have been a snacker. It does not make me crave food or sugar, it just adds weight.
Avatar n tn There may be indirect factors which lead to weight loss. One of them is the awareness of being overweight. Seroquel does play a role in weight gain. And the most important factor to be considered is the depression. Depression itself is a major risk factor for weight gain. Treat your depression, get to a good exercise schedule and you will see a reduction in weight.
Avatar f tn Seroquel like all atypical antipsychotics has the potential of weight gain although each person responds differently to each medication. The other side effects you mentioned are most probably temporary and should go away in time. However you should definitely discuss all this with your psychiatrist.
1246883 tn?1285547973 Hi, welcome to the forum, seroquel is known to be associated with weight gain. There is significant weight gain is seen, in such cases usually other anti psychotics are prescribed. The weight gaining effect of this drug will not persist after discontinuation. Any associated condition should be looked for. If there is a change in voice (Voice becomes dusky), weight gain, intolerance to cold etc. You need to get your T3, t4 and TSH level checked as it may be in initial phase.
Avatar f tn does taking the seroquel medicine itself cause weight gain or is it only because of increased hunger?
Avatar n tn yes the meds.....Seroquel is known for weight gain as well. The real question to be determined by a good Psychiatrist IS; do I need to be on an antipsychotic? That is the question since they cause weight gain. You need to know if you are truly bipolar...if not, no need for the antipsychotic. I think that sounds like a plan. Only a good doc can tell you. I do know they throw the bipolar word around alot.
Avatar f tn I had some problem with weight gain from Seroquel and especially Risperdal. Abilify is less likely to do that but from what you say the Seroquel is tolerable except for the weight gain. Complex. It is important to keep the weight gain in check so I'd suggest having your psychiatrist refer you to a nutrionist and definitely get a test (at least once a year) for blood sugar levels and the like (on any antipsychotic).
202665 tn?1248806733 Yes I did gain weight on lithium. That is relatively common although each person responds differently to each medication. Weight gain can occur on Seroquel as with all atypical antipsychotics. Sleep apnea can occur for a variety of reasons but weight gain can be associated with it. Perhaps your psychiatrist could adjust or change your medications as needed. You could discuss that with them and see what might be of help.
Avatar n tn When I began the synthroid, the weight gain stopped; however, getting off the excess is fairly perplexing to me also. I'd also appreciate info . . .
Avatar n tn i take 375mg of effexor and 300mg of seroquel each day and ive noticed the weight gain coz im quite skinny and i dont really eat that much, i get the crazy dreams and nitemares with the effexor ive even been unlucky enough to be 1 of the 1 in 10,000 that gets seizures from taking it, its no fun shoving a load of pills down ur neck every day just so u can be semi normal, i look 4ward to the day i dont have to fight myself just to stay alive, its no way to life your life
Avatar f tn I don't have a fast metabolism and I've only just started gaining weight. I'm 21 weeks. My doctor wasn't concerned though because baby is growing and everything looks good. My mum actually lost 60-80 lbs with each child she had. I've heard how much you gain is hereditary. So if your family members didn't gain a lot you won't either.
7773352 tn?1394065574 Hello, I take Lithium and Seroquel . The Seroquel increase's appetite and weight gain but i have no issue's with Lithium except dry mouth and dehydration sometime's ,so i drink lot's of water . It's a mood stabilizer and work's well for me and you need regular blood test's so your Lithium levels are not too high .
