Seroquel and melatonin

Common Questions and Answers about Seroquel and melatonin

seroquel

I have been having trouble sleeping in the last three months due to stress/anxiety/depression. I have tried OTC benadryl, valerian root, melatonin, zoplicone, lorazepam. I seen a clinical puschologists today and she got the doctor to write a script for seroquil 25 mg. Anybody ever try this? Apparently it is not an approved use, but they say it works for insomnia at reduced doses.
So i am day 10 of being sober off of a 6 year vicodin habit of 40 tabs of 750mg a day and cant get more than 3 hours of sleep a night. I just got a script from my doc for Seroquel and he says it will help with my sleep and anxiety. But he says it will be about 3-4 days of feeling pretty poor. I am feeling better every day and the last thing i want to do is go through 4 days of feeling like c r a p. I have tried Lunesta, melatonin and benadryl with no luck.
I have a friend whose mother has Parkinson's and she is being given Seroquel as a sleeping pill and I was told even by my psychiatrist that its "the wrong medication". Since all known anti-psychotics with the exception of Clozaril will eventually cause tardive dyskinesia they will worsen Parkinson's in the long run but the effect can be masked while it is occuring and should not be given for assistance with sleeping for this reason.
They're both pharmaceutical products, and melatonin is a lot cheaper and has been used a lot longer. As for the seroquel, I'd just say that anything you take to help you sleep can become a habit, and this drug is much in the news these days for being used in ways it has not been studied for. Sleep is one of those. So I don't know if it's a problem, but the manufacturer is in deep doo doo right now over it. I'd recommend some homework on this one.
That works just fine to get me to sleep. Sometimes I skip the Triazolam and only use the Melatonin and that is fine by itself.
I am feeling like I am drugged and scared to take the next dose and scared not to as well. My pdoc is new to me and never gave an emergency number, he will not be back in his office till tuesday and also this coupled with my lexapro put me in a mixed state and feeling slighty suicidal this happens when I cycle rapidly.
I would want to know from the members of this forum about how many people are using Seroquel only as a sleeping aid in doses of 25 mg and 50 mg.All suggestions and answers are welcome.
Does melatonin give you all three stages of REM or is it mostly to help with the most superficial phase, the dream phase? I understand that melatonin is a hormone secreted at night, and how it is not a drug, but I am just wondering if there is a link between dreams and melatonin.
These meds can disrupt our sleep cycles because they affect the quality of sleep and the quality of our dream sleep. Seroquel is particularly sedating, so it's natural you might have a rebound effect. You can also try Calm's Forte, a homeopathic remedy. I wouldn't recommend the ambien, it's another strong drug, and eventually you'll just adjust to it, too, and it also disturbs natural sleep rhythms. Melatonin, on the other hand, resets your natural body clock, so give it a try.
I have tried Seroquel, Seroquel XR, Zyprexa, and Lithium, all in the space of a few weeks... I thought that they were causing me to cycle harder, but I have realized that I am getting the akathisia side effect from them.. When the sun is down, they bring up my mood, but when it's bright out, I get very agitated.. All of these drugs have this side effect as they work on dopamine. I am at a loss right now; has anyone else had this problem? I am slowly running out of medications...
It was suggested to me by my daughter who takes care of autistic children, that I should try Melotin, but I am on other medication, like anti-depressants and seroquel to name the main ones, and I am worried that I will either have a seizure (again), or go through the withdrawls. Any opinions would help, or if you have changed over to natural medicial sleep aids, please let me know how it worked out for you. Thanks!!
Namaste, Melatonin is a hormone made by a part of the brain called the pineal (say: "pin-ee-all") gland. Melatonin may help our bodies know when it's time to go to sleep and when it's time to wake up. Melatonin can be used to treat insomnia (difficulty falling asleep and/or staying asleep). Some people who have taken melatonin have reported sleepiness, headache, a "heavy-head" feeling, stomach discomfort, depression or feeling hungover.
Continue to take Seroquel tell if you feel snub. Do not miss any doses. Drug Class and Mechanism Seroquel is an antipsychotic. It put up by altering the corpse of certain chemicals that exhibition absolutely in the brain, which are responsible for target and decency. Missed Dose If you miss a dose of Seroquel , take it as soon as right. If it is all over time for your next test, front onto the missed dose and go put an end to to your regular dosing encyclopedia.
My anxiety is very bad right now and I need sleep. SOOO sleep deprived. Hopefully this seroquel xr 50mg will help with insomnia, anxiety and appetite soon.
Currently taking Celexa 1mg daily, lamictal 12.5mg daily and seroquel 50 mg at bedtime to help me sleep. I've had problems with getting to sleep and staying asleep for several years. How long can I continue to take seroquel for sleep? Sometimes it works and sometimes not.
I reduced my grandmother's dose of Seroquel from 1/2 of a 25mg tablet to 1/4 and she still has slight TD-like muscle movements of her lips/tongue and head nodding. She has been on this medication since being in the hospital 6 months ago. When I tried to discontinue, she skipped one dose, had strange thoughts, upset stomach and couldn't sleep. She also takes Dilitiazem and Lasix for BP. Is there something safer she can take to keep her calm and sleep?
I stopped the Seroquel 2 weeks ago. I did get hungry at night and sometimes had a snack but I hired a personal trainer and have been working 4 days a week for a straight hour of cardio style weight lifting (my heart rate maintains at 165 the whole hour) plus I have to do an hour of cardio everyday on top of the training. I have done this for 6 weeks now and have lost 2 pounds. I have lost quite a few inches but no real weight.
I've been taking antidepressants for 30 yrs and was recently taken off those and put on bipolar meds after some serious symptoms developed. In the first month of taking depakote and seroquel I've gained 20 lbs. Doc prescribed Phentermine as an appetite suppressant but it is not helping. I'm so hungry all the time and have no self control. I'm also taking provigil as needed to combat the extreme fatigue from the meds. I feel like I'm such a mess, don't know what to do with myself.
Yes for me it took some time to work although each person responds differently to each medication or treatment but it might be worthwhile to ask your psychiatrist about Rozerem which is an FDA approved medication that works exactly like melatonin to adjust the sleep cycle and is safe and non addictive. Also it has an exact dose and quantity unlike any natural remedy so if they considered it a possibility could find out what dose would work right for you.
Aleril is a new natural supplemant for sleep and it works rather well! It contains, melatonin, valerian root and L-Triptophane, all natural and non addicting. It costs about $15 per box and you take 2 before going to bed.
The seroquel seems to be working very well - I was starting w/d last night and w/in 30mins of taking seroquel I was able to sleep a whole 8hrs - but I'm worried it's b/c I still had sub in my system.
If not the medication Rozerem is a sleep aide that works like melatonin to adjust the sleep cycle and is safe and non addictive. You could ask your psychiatrist about that.
I have been off the Klonopin since 3/20/2009 and since 3/20 if have been taking Seroquel. I did not experience seizures since I stop Klonopin but after I stop Klonopin and switched to Seroquel there are nights I can't sleep... it's been like when I had a good sleep last night the next night I can't sleep. I am also experiencing muscle jerk and back pain. Do you think these are Klonopin withdrawals?
I stopted taking my seroquel as of mid November of 2010... im currently withdrawing and ... it is very difficult... I tried herbs... valerian.... Melatonin (3 mg... 1.50 mg... 1 mg.. 0.50 mg..) and I have days of sleep and stressful nights of hell of no sleep.. If someone out there has a advice on my situation i would really appreciate there help!!! my Dr recommend i try Saphris 5mg at night... but im nervous...
Hello, There's only been one time in my life when I have suffered from such debilitating anxiety and insomnia as I am now. I have only been getting 2-3 hours sleep for the past couple months and it is taking its toll. The daytime anxiety is unbearable too. At night when I wake up I feel like my body is a tympanic drum and under so much pressure that I am going to explode. That's how horrible and strong the anxiety is.
I will be seeing my psychiatrist at the end of the month to refill my Valium (as needed) and to get another refill of Seroquel. It's also 5 a.m. and I can't sleep, so I'd imagine that I'd also need some kind of sleeping pill (I've missed a pill before and I could not sleep). How long should this take, for me to get Seroquel out of my system? What kind of side effects should I expect?
Possible stopgaps include going back to 25-50 mg of Seroquel to get some sleep, using benedryl (which acts on the same receptors that Seroquel does when it makes you sleepy), using melatonin, or even getting a script for short term Ambien, because you're right, sleep disturbance is bad for everyone and much, much worse for those with bipolar. A script for 25-50 mg trazadone for sleep might be good for long term (it's an antidepressant, but is mainly used at very low doses for sleep).
I too have noticed the same thing about not only seroquel but trazadone also. Seroquel can cause drowsiness and sedation which is what may cause some to crave more.
During all this I started a new job and I would lay in bed at night and have bad anxiety and panic attacks and I could not sleep . I stated taking .5 alprazolam and it helped for a little while then nothing. My dr. Started me on ambien and lunesta with little relief from either drug. The I started 100mg of trazadone with my .5 alprazolam. I started with a quarter of the trazadone .25 and quickly went all the way up to 200. And still it was a coin toss if I was going to sleep or not.
pdocs tell me there is no such thing as therapeutic it depends on the person. i take 50mg seroquel and keeps me lethargic and doesn't remove depression. i can't understand why a 400mg will do the trick as to the AC's i tried tegretol and lamictal, the 1st gave me headaches and te 2nd kind of seizure. I feel not at ease with the drugs in general, feeling drowsy and numb and want to vomit, i.e. in short don't tolerate them.
