Common Questions and Answers about Seizures in golden retrievers

seizure

Avatar f tn It's really unlikely - it sounds like he had wonderful veterinary and pet owner care! Lyme disease typically results in chronic lameness and rarely, chronic kidney changes (mostly Labradors and Golden retrievers), and rarely causes meningitis. If it is meningitis, it's not chronic seizures - it's acute disease. it doesn't sound like it's from Lyme, honestly. I'm glad you were able to rescue him from what sounds like a terrible situation...
Avatar n tn Both of our golden retrievers were just over 1 year when they started estrus. However she could have had it and you didn't notice. And as jaybay said a male could have already mated with her. If she appears to be in pain you need to take her to the vet.
Avatar n tn The two golden retrievers I know noses have a big brown spot now......I would call and ask the vet, im curious to see what thats' about. Let us know what they say.
7627194 tn?1396395744 One said he could be part Maremma Sheepdog or Akbash dog. Golden Retrievers and Labs are commonly bred with Pyrs in my area but the breeders told me he seems too big to be mixed with either of those. Whether or not he's purebred doesn't affect my adopting him, I'm just curious. I'm not sure if I can add multiple pictures, so for now, here's one.
Avatar f tn The crate door is open nowadays so he can sleep where he wants. He is in there only at night with 2 Golden Retrievers who are no problem at all. I have a camera in the room at night so I can see what goes on. He wakes up about 4x a night & pees & poos, walks all around, then goes back to sleep. Its like he just can't sleep through the night at all. My other 2 dogs sleep like rocks. I have no idea what to do. Any ideas?
655875 tn?1295695107 D I will train the dog not to pull before he/she gets too big. Golden Retrievers are suppose to be very easy to train.
Avatar f tn Now he is stumbling all over and having a hard time getting up they say this is normal for about 2 to3 weeks and he will adjust to the medication and they do a blood test to adjust if need be his dosage. My golden retriever is 13 year-old and was in good health before this happen. The emergency vet said we could do a MRIsca on him but his age and his opinions if it was a brain tumor. So we said no to the scan. But it may not be a tumor and putting him under I don't want to risk it.
21064 tn?1309308733 Golden retrievers are FANTASTIC. I would like to have one someday, too. I have 2 cats. Cats have a reputation for being aloof and unfriendly. It's true that some are, but some cats are incredibly loving and affectionate companions. My 2 cats are so friendly and cuddly and bring me happiness every day.
640548 tn?1340553355 Golden retrievers are usually wonderful with kids and their temperament is pretty consistent from dog to dog so it's generally a safe bet. That said, any can be destructive if they don't get enough exercise so just be prepared for a lot of walks.
Avatar f tn We have a 8 months old golden retriever in our family. We are also planning to have a baby. What should I do to avoid the pet impact to pregnancy?
Avatar m tn My family is in a similar situation, our 9 year old coon hound in excellent health had 3 grand mal seizures in less than 24 hrs. We had a basic work up done at the vet after the first seizure which essentially came back normal. We have started her on phenobarb and prednisone, but I am glad I checked out the thread b/c I did not know the medication side effects were so profound...
Avatar m tn The most common cause of a fading nose is called “snow nose” or “winter nose,” because the dog’s nose will fade to pink or white during the winter months, and return to black once summer arrives. Labrador Retrievers, Golden Retrievers, Bernese Mountain dogs, and Siberian Huskies have this seasonal variation in the color of the nasal planum. Some dogs within these breeds, and even dogs of other breeds, have noses that change from black to brown or pink as the animal ages.

6726276 tn?1421126668 One time we had a huge storm, so we brought all the cats in (they slept at that time in boxes in a mostly-enclosed porch, but for some reason that didn't seem like enough) and our two Golden Retrievers. Set out the dog beds, set up the cat sleeping boxes, put the animals in the room. One by one, each cat went over, sniffed the dog's bed, and peed in it. Can't remember now if they picked on one dog, or if they shared the bounty between both beds.
403156 tn?1290150018 From what I have read, 90% of thyroid tumors are cancerous in dogs and golden retrievers are more susceptible. We have an appointment with her vet on Thursday. What is the long term prognosis? Given how large it is, is it likely that it has spread? I am just trying to prepare myself...
Avatar n tn I had a 10 week old Golden Retriever puppy that suddenly developed seizures that wouldn't stop. He was perfectly fine...no symptoms at all one minute, then started having seizures the next. I immediately drove him to the emergency vet (it was 1:30 am) who ran blood tests. The initial blood test showed a high white cell count along with a 106 fever. He had to put him under general anesthesia to stop the seizures.
Avatar m tn My golden who turns 14 in two days had a grand mal seizure at the beginning of November, then was seizure-free until the beginning of February. She had three seizures over a 72-hour period so the vet put her on phenobarbital, 75mg twice a day.
Avatar n tn My 125 pound 11 year old golden retriever started having seizures about a year ago approximately 1 monthly. On Friday 1/21/17 he had 9 seizures in a row. The next morning the vet started him on 6 grain phenabarbital morning and night. By the second day on this medication he stopped using his hind quarters. I convinced the vet to reduce the phenobarbital and he has been on 2 grain twice a day since 1/23/2017 The vet started him on rimadyl 1/24/2017 thinking it was due to inflammation.
Avatar f tn The headquarters for the agency Paws with a Cause which trains assistance dogs is down the road a few miles from my house and I know for a fact that while most of their dogs are Labrador and Golden Retrievers they have other types of assistance dogs as well as small terrier-sized dogs. My new dog, Luna is a Chocolate Lab mix who was found by a friend as a stray. She is very good-natured and I am hoping that she will be able to be a therapy dog.
Avatar f tn Does anyone have experience with sudden seizures in their dog?? This happened to my firends dog pretty Xena about a week ago. It was very severe, and she had to be rushed to her vet. Her vet has not given a diagnosis yet, but put her on phenobarbitol and valium. My friend said that about a year ago Xena had epissodes of chaterring teeth and shaky legs - she told her vet about it but he did not seem too concerned. The vet has not diagnosed the cause yet of this severe seizure last weekend ...
Avatar f tn My 14 1/2 year old golden Heather just recently started having grandma seizures. Both seizures came on after she was stressed. My vet put her on phenol and she doesn't do anything now except sleep. She is having a problem with her rear limbs. She can't seem to get up on her own...but once we get her up she is alright. I want my sweet girl back. She has been on the pheno for a week now. Can anyone help me understand this as I am a basket case.
Avatar n tn Other dogs that seem predisposed to histiocytic sarcoma include Flat-Coated Retrievers, Golden Retrievers and Rottweilers. Symptoms of canine histiocytic sarcoma include weight loss, low energy, limping and failure to eat. Chemotherapy has been mostly unsuccessful against this form of cancer, and most dogs succumb to the disease within months of diagnosis. I agree with you decision vs quality of life issues. If he seems to be doing well on the pain meds, that's a good thing.
Avatar f tn is there anymore information you guys know about people with seizures in there sleep i need to know i am starting to have them and i am really scared...
624829 tn?1240755671 It's a hard call, which is why people have different opinions about it. It's a very invasive surgery, so it won't necessarily be easy for him to recover from it, and there's always a slight risk that a pet, especially an older one, can die under anaesthesia. On the other hand, yes, he does have a greater-than-normal risk of testicular cancer, due to undescended testes.
Avatar m tn My 7 year old Golden, Bella, had 8 seizures in less than 24 hours last Thursday/Friday. She has been on phenobarbital since Thursday at 10am (every 12 hours). We brought her home Friday night and she is progressively getting better. It's been great reading your posts/remarks on this topic as I feel very sad that we won't get our regular peppy Bella back to us. However, in reading these, I see that we need to be patient and in time she will get back to herself. Here's my question.
