Avatar n tn Birth defects are a risk but not a guarentee. I hottubbed a lot during my first 6 weeks, not knowing it could cause neurological problems like downs. The hope that lives in me if that this possibility won't be my reality. I would read multiple sites to determine how legitament the birth defect claim is, and how often. I read on a chia seed drink, "not for pregnant women" and looked it up online...the lable was there because research has not been done and it was just a precaution.
Avatar f tn Hi Elaine, it So I am now 23 weeks along with my pregnancy. All is going well except I have had a lot of anxiety from my 3 miscarriages last year. My dr recently put me on 10mg prozac which I only took for a week because I am going to try to get through the rest of my pregnancy without it and perhaps start up near the end for the postpartum benefits. But now I am worried because I have read that antidepressants can cause pphd in newborns if antidepressants were taken in late pregnancy.

Avatar f tn Taking Dilantin in early pregnancy may lead to birth defects but they are relatively uncommon. The various defects which may occur are growth delay, limb abnormalities, facial defects; mental retardation etc. Inform your gynecologist about your delayed periods. Take up urine pregnancy test. If you are pregnant your doctor may gradually decrease the dose and stop it and may prescribe an alternative anti seizure medicine which is safe during pregnancy.

Avatar f tn I was wondering if anyone has heard of Lexapro causing birth defects if the male is taking the Lexapro? Avatar f tn These studies suggested that Klonopin may increase the risk of various birth defects, including cleft palate and limb defects. However, this is a controversial issue, since some human studies have shown that the risk of birth defects may be very small. Benzodiazepines (such as Klonopin) may also cause other problems, such as withdrawal symptoms after an infant is born.
1559533 tn?1308948561 Yes, anti-seizure medications (Tegretol, Gabapentin, Lyrica, etc) are used to treat neuropathic pain (things like Trigeminal Neuralgia or Dysthesias.) They can also be used to treat seizure disorders. They did not seem to effect my diagnosis. They did not effect my neuro exams, MRI, VEP, LP, etc.
Avatar f tn Monotherapy for seizures is usually indicated during pregnancy rather than polytherapy for decreasing the incidence of birth defects in the fetus. It is best that she is in close follow up of her doctor for having an uneventful pregnancy. I sincerely hope it helps. Take care and regards!
3178266 tn?1344536316 Unlike many other medications, valproic acid has been studied in many pregnant women. Several studies have shown that the drug may cause birth defects in humans. Sometimes, these birth defects can be very severe, and pregnant women should not take valproic acid unless absolutely necessary.
Avatar n tn Any medication like Xanax is going to run a higher risk of birth defects than without it. Talk to your doctor and see what they say. Everyone is different but Xanax does have a withdrawal effect so you should really talk to your doctor about everything.

Avatar f tn How does birth defects happen is it in the family blood? Or what you eat or if you get hurt? Avatar n tn Her surgerian told me whenever i was to get pregnant again i had to drink a higher dosis of folic acid to prevent birth defects, my ob prescribed me folic acid in pills which i have to take 4 of them every day im not taking no vitamins since he didnt prescribed none to me. I have to say im really concern about this pregnancy im so worried. Idk if any of you ladies had gone through something similar to this.
Avatar f tn Yeah, milk is definitely not necessary for anyone to drink. If you're worried about calcium Google "foods high in calcium" and you'll see many other options. As the ladies said above, soda isn't necessarily going to cause birth defects, but high sugar intake is not nourishing for mom or baby. I looked it up once and 4gms of sugar is about 1 tsp so one can of Mountain Dew, with 46gms of sug has ELEVEN teaspoons of sugar in it. One can! It's crazy!
Avatar n tn i m really worried wheather 2 continue this pregnancy as effect of the tab lasts for 7 days in blood and medical literature i reffered 2 shows that even a single tab fluconazole taken during pregnancy has left to birth defects. but i read on ur site that first 18 days of conception baby is resistant to harm ful effect of drugs n radiation.
Avatar m tn Standard Protocol When a pregnant woman wants to detoxify from opiates or other opioids, the recognized standard of care, according to the National Health Institute, is methadone treatment while under a doctor's supervision. Methadone is not known to cause birth defects nor have any long-term affects on a baby.
Avatar f tn Studies showed that the drug made male animals less fertile. Also, birth defects occurred in the offspring of male animals who were treated with pregabalin. The plus side is that there are other medications that can be used in place of Lyrica to treat certain issues. I would encourage your future son in law to explore other options if possible.
Avatar f tn I'm 14 weeks now, and I don't know how to feel about everything I have taken. I've tried to stay medicine free but it's too intense sometimes. I take tums almost every night for horrible heartburn. I've been having to take Benadryl lately for really bad allergies. I had to take zofran pretty much my entire first trimester. (Yes, I've read the crazy "birth defects" articles about Zofran, my doc settled that and it's fine to take).
Avatar n tn nurse is right plz discuss this with your doctor asap xanax can cuase birth defects.
Avatar f tn The babies of women taking seizure medicines have a greater than usual number of major birth defects like cleft lip, cleft palate, and heart malformations. Defects like these occur in 2-3% of all pregnancies but affect 4-7% of the babies of women taking AEDs. Whether this is also true for Topamax is not yet known. The risk of birth defects is higher for women who take more than one AED and for women with a family history of birth defects.
Avatar m tn Hi there, i had a brain injury in feb and havent had any seizures yet but i was told in order to get back to driving/work etc i might have to take an anti-seizure medication. What medications are there? And i was told by someone else that they will slow down my recovery. because they are stimulants? in what way would they slow it down?
Avatar f tn Hello. Detoxing right now can be harmful to the baby who will feel everything the mother is feeling....especially cold turkey. Make an appointment with a doctor to discuss the different possibilities. One possibility is methadone as it is relatively is safe for the baby. Then, after you have the baby you can address your addiction and get off the methadone.
