Common Questions and Answers about Seizure in older people

seizure

Avatar m tn I have read several posts about phenobarbital in relation to seizures in dogs. My old fella, Oliver is a mixed breed collie who is 16 1/2 years old who to this date has been healthy. On Sunday night he had a full blown seizure (which I have never seen before) that lasted at least 2 minutes. We took him into the emergency vets and they confirmed he was still seizing when we got there. He stayed overnight, did not have another seizure and is now on pheno (60mg) and prednisone (short term).
Avatar n tn As soon as she conflicted pain upon me I woke up with 5 people rubbing all over me. The Dr. said that I had a seizure and that I needed someone to pick me up. I had to call my mother to pick me up so embarrassed. He asked me why I didn't tell him about the seizures. I told him that if he looked on the history that he would find that I put down that I had seizures. Then he wanted to know why I'm not on medicine. I had procedures done.
Avatar n tn There is no major drug use reported, and no history in the family of epilepsy or any other seizure disorder. What could have caused this?
Avatar f tn I was taken in by ambulance and had a million tests done and nothing came up as to why I had a seizure. Obviously I know it is from the Tramadol but no one else knows I am addicted. After having every test possible, the doctors wanted me to go on 1000mg Keppra. I chose not to because I knew it was from the Tramadol and am terrified of the Keppra side effects. Fast forward to a year and a half and I just had my 2nd seizure last Thursday night.
Avatar f tn Tramadol does indeed lower the seizure threshold. Withdrawal from tramadol can provoke seizures in people who do not have a seizure disorder, as is also the case with many anti-convulsants used off-label in pain management but FDA-approved for seizure control. My docs won't even consider tramadol or certain tricyclics for me since I have a history of seizures. However, in your case the benefit of pain relief might outweigh risk of seizure.
Avatar n tn Okay... I know it's several days after you posted this, but nobody's answered and I just came across it now. Don't panic... Upon reading what you described, my first thought is... your kid might have epilepsy. All those strange things she's doing .. that could be a seizure. Many people only know about the generalized seizures (entire brain misfiring briefly) where a person will fall down and shake or simply become unaware of their surroundings and stare off into space.
Avatar m tn m guessing this is due to the tight muscles from the seizure) we let the older dog back in and she was sniffing her and all over her like she normally does after a seizure, which we believe she's "making sure the young dog is okay". The older dog normally protects the younger one, once the Morki was having a seizure while I was sleeping (the sleep in the bed with me, or mom, or whoever is home.
1098760 tn?1266447897 He Will Not stop growling out of no-where at guests, in a church, the movie theater if someone comes up the steps, at crying children or people who dont approach him with confidence. This started at roughly 6 months old. EVERYTHING Until now has been based on POsitive Training. Treats etc. Ive never delt with a dog that wouldnt Stop with a harsh slap for such dangerous behavior at the Worst. I even resorted to frying him with a hunting dog collar at one point, at the movies.
Avatar n tn Hi, how are you feeling now and how about your sleep now a days. Such episodes does cause sleep disturbacne and restlessness in some of people. It could be a night terror or a nighmare. Too much stressed body and mind do not get proper rest and may be a triggering factor. You need to see a neurologist if symptoms worsens further. Keep posting your thoughts. Take care.
Avatar n tn It does sound like a seizure, and contrary to how awful it looks, seizures are not painful. It's also not uncommon for older dogs to develop seizure activity. Call your vet and have him make a note of the episode in your dogs's chart. Make sure you tell him the time of day the seizure happened as well. It may be a one-time occurrence - or not. If the seizures become more commonplace, phenobarbitol is one medication that most vets start with to control them.
Avatar m tn A vet visit is definitely in order. Behavior such as this is not unusual in much older dogs because this type of behavior usually coincides with sight and/or hearing deficits that are common to elderly dogs. But a three year old dog should not have these problems and in a young dog this can be indicative of seizure activity. People tend to think that a seizure means the dog is convulsing or thrashing on the floor but there are different types of seizures.
Avatar f tn Hi, age is no barrier for seizures; there are plenty of causes related with fits. Usually in adults or young people seizures are related with epilepsy or non epileptic like psychogenic seizures. “It can manifest as an alteration in mental state, tonic or clonic movements, convulsions, and various other psychic symptoms. It is caused by a temporary abnormal electrical activity of a group of brain cells.
488823 tn?1218370567 You must be in the Eltrombopag trial? I haven't seen many in it here at the forum, but I am following it with interest since I have a friend who will not be able to treat unless Eltrombopag is approved. I wish you luck and hope you can find a way to endure the side effects so you can continue treating.
Avatar f tn Not knowing a seizure happened is very normal. You should probably get him an EEG that would give you the most information. Just understand that we don't know a lot about the brain, so knowing why someone has a seizure isn't something that can be answered. Do not take what I'm saying in place of what a doctor will tell you. I want to stress that I'm not a doctor.
Avatar f tn See a neurologist as soon as possible. People can have epilepsy where the seizures occur only during sleep. She needs to be tested.
320944 tn?1245966599 After all this time on tramadol I finally took too much and had a seizure in the middle of Golden Coral. My ex called 911 and I was taken away in an ambulance. I do not remeber having the seizure or anything else in between I woke up in the ambulance when we were almost to the hospital no knowing what was going on. I did not mention a thing about using tramadol. They took my blood and could not understand why it had a high level of PCP in it.
Avatar m tn Yes, she could have FIP or it may just be idiopathic seizure disorder. Tumors are unlikely at her age, usually occurring in a much older cat. Phenobarbital would not only be a treatment but it would help with diagnosis. If the cause of your cats seizure disorder is FIP than phenobarbital will not be as effective in controlling the seizures as it would be for idiopathic seizure disorder.
Avatar f tn That may be some form of a minor seizure as well (there are multiple classes of seizures of course) as a person does not have to lose consciousness during a seizures. A person can have different types of seizures, not just the specific ones they were diagnosed with. Best to speak to a neurologist and they could do tests such as EEG's to see what is happening during those staring spells to see if its some form of seizure and then decide from there how to treat it.
Avatar f tn some people do experience headaches after seizures, especially generalized seizures, and sometimes complex partials, just depends on the patient. But yes, it is not too uncommon.
Avatar n tn Hi a Pitbull pup 9 months old we saved last weekend, who was covered in ticks, possibly with tick fever, was put on Doxydog, yesterday he started getting seizures, no matter what medication, no matter what the vet did, it got worse and worse, this morning 4 times in half an hour, we just put him out of his misery.
439601 tn?1357860886 Now I started out with absence (petit mal) which is like a staring spell, these seizures occur most commonly in people under age 20, usually in children ages 6 to 12, but it sure happens to older folks like myself. Than the seizures went to partial (focal) seizure which was complex, meaning it affected my awareness and memory of events before, during and immediately after the seizure. You can also get muscle contractions, mine was lip smacking.
401370 tn?1233324682 In status epilepticus, the most serious seizure disorder and a medical emergency, the seizure does not stop. Electrical discharges occur throughout the brain. The discharges produce a generalized seizure lasting more than 15 minutes or recurring seizures between which the person does not completely regain consciousness. The person has convulsions with intense muscle contractions and cannot breathe adequately.
Avatar m tn As an older guy, I prefer women in their early fifties. What's my chances of getting an STD with protected sex. Also with oral sex.
498656 tn?1213446919 I am not sure if she is having them due to medical condition that has been diagnosed or not...some people have seizure disorders ...alcohol withdrawal can also cause seizures for heavy drinkers...my father in law would try and quit and he would have seizures and we would have to take him to the ER....I have had patients who are heavy drinkers and a couple days into their stay all kinds of crazy stuff starts happening and they end up in restraint...called DTs..i am not sure of all of her history.
