Common Questions and Answers about Seizure disorders signs and symptoms

seizure

Avatar m tn I have epileptic seizures and what some doctors call psuedoseizures. I have had 2 strokes and have bad vertigo, and syncope. This can cause seizure like activity and is definitely not psychological. It would be nice if doctors who think they are no it alls would do more research into seizures due to autonomic dysfunction before they classify everyone not having epileptic seizures as having psychological problems.
Avatar f tn You should probably see a neurologist, for the seizure as well. You should certainly document all of your symptoms, physical and mental (smells, tastes, fears, panic, etc.) for your doctor visits. I have one son with epilepsy, and lost my daughter to epilepsy. Neither child had or has thyroid or pituitary issues. I am the thyroid issue, lol. However there is potential connection as both can be the result of underlying autoimmune disorders. My family has a long list of autoimmune disorders.
Avatar n tn It is not at all uncommon to find folks who have been misdiagnosed initially with a psychiatric disorder, given that the signs and symptoms of certain forms of epilepsy are often vague or non-specific in their presentation, and are often misinterpreted as anxiety neurosis or panic. A 24-hr EEG is of value to exclude such a possibility, but it is not 100% flawless. Consider consultation with a neurologist and try to describe the symptoms in great detail. The greater the detail, the better.
Avatar n tn (Currently available) antipsychotics can cause permenant movement disorder such as tardive dyskinesia. However, they must wait a period of time for withdrawl dyskineis to pass. From my knowledge atypical antipsychotics can increase the seizure threshold but this effect is generally not permanent. It would be best to see a neurologist who is a movement disorders specialist and have them do full follow up including an EEG (the specific kind to try to set off seizures) and an MRI.

Avatar f tn If I were to explain it, I would say I am having symptoms of MS (multiple sclerosis). I had an MRI and it came back clear. I had an EEG and that came back with no abnormalities. I have no idea when my symptoms started but it got extremely worse. My symptoms are as follows: Headache Dizziness Confusion Fatigue Tremors in hands mostly but do happen in legs, arms, shoulder, and neck.Head shakes too.
1221035 tn?1301000508 I agree with both Jen and 2P. The four DMDs are not associated with causing or allowing seizures.
1488245 tn?1288209264 Your symptoms are suggestive of multiple sclerosis. It has multiple symptoms and signs and is a diagnosis of exclusion. The symptoms of multiple sclerosis are loss of balance, muscle spasms, numbness in any area, problems with walking and coordination, tremors in one or more arms and legs.
Avatar f tn Can you be bipolar and only experience manic symptoms? It's my son and I am bipolar. I know it's hereditary. I experience both manic and depressed episodes. He does not get depressed, but shows many signs of being manic.
393942 tn?1315560152 A Somatization Disorder is a type of a Somatoform Disorder. Other Somatoform Disorders include Conversion Disorder, Hypochondriasis, and so on. Please be very careful about this diangosis. I have heard from many people who have been misdiangosed with a somatoform disorder who actually had an "organic" dissease. I am sure that I would have been diagnosed with a somatoform disorder if I had not insisted that doctors persue a neurological explanation for my symptoms.
Avatar f tn I currently take Trileptal for Partial Seizures (my seizures are well controlled with it) but whenever I miss 2 doses in a row (which I obviously try not to), I experience numbness and tingling in my face and head. I know these are symptoms of MS and I know Trileptal can be used for MS patients to help with nerve issues. I guess my question is should I see my neurologist? Is it possible that this face numbness/tingling sensations are symptoms of MS? FYI I am a 33 yr old female.
Avatar f tn In our case there was an option and from then on I insisted on it. But the vets denied any link between her symptoms and the vaccines. It IS always possible she does have an epileptic condition, but of course, there is another drug regimen for that and then there is a slippery slope of one drug to combat another! Usually it's only a trial with the epilepsy drug that results in a diagnosis, and even then there is guesswork involved.
419158 tn?1316571604 But my question is for mothers who have had childrenn with seizures. What are the signs and symptoms?? MY son started crying kinda funny, I dont how eles to explain it except that it was like he couldnt cry, when I picked him up he got jerky in my arms and got stiff. He started foaming at the mouth, kinda like a rabitt dog. The whole time crying. He looked so scared. Maybe it wasnt a seizure but I was freaking out. It only lasted about 3-5 minutes but seemed alot longer.
Avatar f tn His MRI came out clear but the doctor said that his EEG showed seizure activity in his left frontal lobe and gave him an rx for Keppra. They didn't give him an explanation as to what the cause was and so I called them. The first nurse told me that he is having complex partial seizures. After looking at the information it's possible that some of the things he's always done in his sleep are really seizures. They didn't explain why he was convulsing during the day with no warning.
462332 tn?1208414791 My neurologist explained that the lab report findings were of changes in the hippocampus and that such findings were normal in patients who have seizure disorders. (BTW, I was diagnosed with encephalitis at about 13 or so but my doctor was pretty poor and I highly doubt that's what it was.) However, he did find that my blood work came back with a positive reading for ANAs. He has since recommended that I speak with a rheumatologist.
Avatar m tn Finally, there are a few disorders of the central nervous system that can lead to weakness and seizures with normal MRI, such as certain genetic, metabolic, or mitochondrial disorders, and other peripheral nervous system disorders (such as neuropathy) that would not explain the seizures but would rather potentially explain weakness or walking difficulties.
Avatar m tn Sleep at regular hours and see if it helps. Certain sleep disorders and peripheral nerve disorders due to diabetes or hypothyroidism can also be the cause. Some of these can cause dizziness too.
Avatar n tn I have been on Keppra and Lamotrigene for many months for seizures. No problem with seizure meds but began having terrible oder issues ,everything smells horrible - skin, food , lotions, shampoos etc. Could this be interaction with these meds . ?
Avatar n tn I have a chronic cough from being ashtmatic and a smoker. Obviously I need to quit smoking. I'm a 33yr old male about 50lb overweight (6'4, 250). However, my recent concern is that I get 1-2 week long cough attacks like twice a year, and during these attacks, I am getting increased episodes of vertigo and shakes.
Avatar f tn This is due to an inflammation in the temporal artery and other arteries in the body. Symptoms include one sided headache pain in the temple and jaw that may be triggered by chewing. This condition can be diagnosed by a blood test called an ESR and a biopsy of the artery. It is very important to rule this diagnosis out as it is highly treatable and if left untreated it can lead to vision loss. It is exceedingly rare in people younger than 55, and is more common in even older age groups.
