Second hand smoke lung disease

Common Questions and Answers about Second hand smoke lung disease

smoking

Avatar f tn Now that a lot more is known about second-hand smoke, I'm really curious if when I got married to a smoker if that didn't bring on my allergies. Within 1.5 years of being married and living with a smoker, I all of sudden developed severe allergies where I was waking up every 30 minutes because my nose was completely closed up. I became allergic to the world, there's no place I can move to alleviate it.
1580703 tn?1651904887 I too have developed asthma at 57 years of age, or maybe earlier and didn't know it. I too like you thought it may have been from second hand smoke, but I don't think you can get this from second hand smoke after researching the subject. COPD on the other hand is associated with smoking. My condition on the other hand may be due to a hiatal hernia or either allergens, which I plan on getting checked out soon.
Avatar f tn I am not a doctor, but I think that it's absolutely terrible if you've gotten COPD from second hand smoke. I really hope that the "second hand" smoker that's been exposing you WILL now have the incentive to quit. I would personally, feel horrible if my smoking caused someone to get copd!!
Avatar m tn Thank you for answering my question about my mild hyperinflated lungs, as seen on my CT scan. I do not smoke, I was around second hand smoke for years while my husband smoked, he has recently stopped smoking! But my question now is: what can I do to take care of my lungs, should I be worried, am I prone to have early lung disease or anything??? I am only 39!!!
Avatar f tn If you do smoke and cant quit try to just smoke outside of by a window with a fan blowing it outside. Even cutting down on second hand smoke exposure will help.
2006603 tn?1331329327 There are many risks with second hand smoke exposure even for ppl who are not pregnant. Second hand smoke can cause under developed lungs, increase the chance of sids, low birth weight, baby can develop asthma and a bunch of other things too. Its good your fiance doesn't smoke in the house or around you but he should get into the habbit of not smoking in the car either. The nicotine can settle into the fabrics which is the same as smoking a cigarette while being in the room with the baby.
Avatar f tn Look if you're that worried about your baby then seriously just stop going over there. Think about it if you will. You either be alone or go to your grandma's where you will inhale second hand smoke which is way worse than smoking itself. It's terrible that your gma is like that but if she is indeed like that then just stop going over there. She obviously doesn't care to stop so just stay home and try to stay occupied. Your babies health is of the utmost importance.
Avatar f tn he want smoke around me. So just look up the facts on second hand smoking then present your facts to your family & let them know your concerns regarding your unborn child.
Avatar f tn No. You can't get high from second hand weed smoke unless someone literally sits there and continuously blows smoke right in your face for countless hours....
1017020 tn?1251253324 But smoking is a huge culprit of developing COPD. Do as suggested. Do not smoke. And avoid second hand smoke and smoky environments. I do believe occupation can play a huge role in developing COPD as well. I worked around vats of hot glue, silicone, fiberglass, solder and worked in dusty warehouses. Of course, I was told that none of these things would harm me by employers. And possibly as posted, certain meds could cause COPD as well.
Avatar f tn There are many causes of shortness of breath with exercise, including but not limited to asthma and COPD (the COPD unlikely in a non-smoker, even one exposed to passive cigarette smoke). Second hand smoke could aggravate many lung diseases causing shortness of breath, not just asthma and COPD. Given that you have taken a first step and had physical examination of your chest/lungs by your doctor and a chest X-ray.
Avatar n tn t tell they were until this lady literally exhaled the smoke almost in my face as she walked by and I definitely inhaled some second hand smoke -- it was that strong. I literally had to get off the phone and ask them were they serious. I just got a new job and will be expected to take a drug test next week. I normally wouldn't think much of that episode, but am somewhat concerned because I definitely inhaled some of the second hand smoke as they walked by.
Avatar f tn She then said there is nothing I can do about the COPD since I do not smoke. I have never been around second hand smoke except for the last year or two. My son stuffs things around his door so the smoke doesn't come through but it still escapes a little. I use air cleaners downstairs. He constantly sneaks smokes even though I forbid him to smoke in the house. My brother died 4 years ago at age 52 of sarcoidosis. At his death he was on oxygen 24/7 and could hardly breathe.
Avatar f tn t want her over there nor them coming to see her smelling like smoke because My mom who has never smoked a day in her life is dealing with a collapsed lung and lung cancer due to 2nd hand smoking. The smell of smoke harms my mom. And I just really fear for my daughter.
Avatar m tn Smoking is number one reason for getting it.. Second hand smoke #2. But their are people who have never smoked that also get it. According to what type it is, doctors can do surgery and then have chemo and radiation treatments. What Stage is it? That also makes a huge difference in treatment options.
1117137 tn?1345227905 i hear you on the second hand smoke, and i used to be a smoker too, i quit the day i found out i was pregnant - and it wasn't hard cuz i had noticed a week before we found out they weren't doing anything for me- and actually making me turn "green" But my husband still smokes... and i can't stand it!!
Avatar n tn public place, workplace, where smoking is permitted, you may have incurred a chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) from second-hand smoke. Also, working in construction, with asbestos or other related materials, or other occupations where chemicals are present (fiber board, plastic manufacturing, etc) you may have damaged lungs without realizing it. Were you prescribed medication, and have you seen a pulmonary specialist or did your family doctor diagnose this?
Avatar n tn I've had a chronic cough for 10 years and have been treated for allergies and asthma only to find out that's not the cause. I've had two CT's that showed two small masses (one approx. 9mm). I was referred to a lung surgeon who will not perform surgery because he says there's no guarantee that he could reach it. He's recommending a PETscan in the next 3 months. He believes it non cancerous but does not guarantee it.
Avatar f tn The second hand smoke is not good for you or the baby. Ask mom, if she can smoke outside of the house. Plus, there is a tiny chance that u can test positive for weed. My friend went to a concert when she was around 4 months and everyone was smoking around her. At her next dr. appt. The nurse talked to her about her "drug use" because she tested positive for weed. She explained what happened and the.nurse said ok, but for her next two appointments the.
1681607 tn?1305722851 National Institute of Health states on a web page that it's typically caused by being exposed long-term to lung damaging irritants- most commonly from cigarettes. Second-hand smoke, fumes from chemicals & dust, etc. can also be factors when inhaled. There are rare cases when a certain genetic problem can lead to it.
Avatar m tn You symptoms could also be due to Small airway disease, which affects the respiratory bronchioles. Disease of small airways results from exposure to tobacco smoke, mineral dust, air-pollutants, and viral infections. It may also be associated with connective tissue disorders. The pulmonary function tests are abnormal only late in the disease and the damage done is irreversible.
Avatar m tn That is to say that your current lung problem is just asthma and not some other, smoke induced, lung disease. You mentioned your concern about hypersensivity lung disease (hypersensitivity pneumonitis or HP). That’s highly unlikely, without evidence of progression, after many years. Were you to have experienced permanent lung damage, even with insidious progression, it should be evident by the above testing, by this time.
Avatar f tn If your family isnt willing to stop smoking and you have other options use them. Second hand smoke is awful and bad for your baby.
Avatar f tn its jus smoking & second hand smoke you jus gotta worry about. more of second hand smoke tho.
