Second hand smoke copd

Common Questions and Answers about Second hand smoke copd

smoking

Avatar f tn I am not a doctor, but I think that it's absolutely terrible if you've gotten COPD from second hand smoke. I really hope that the "second hand" smoker that's been exposing you WILL now have the incentive to quit. I would personally, feel horrible if my smoking caused someone to get copd!!
1681607 tn?1305722851 National Institute of Health states on a web page that it's typically caused by being exposed long-term to lung damaging irritants- most commonly from cigarettes. Second-hand smoke, fumes from chemicals & dust, etc. can also be factors when inhaled. There are rare cases when a certain genetic problem can lead to it.
Avatar f tn She then said there is nothing I can do about the COPD since I do not smoke. I have never been around second hand smoke except for the last year or two. My son stuffs things around his door so the smoke doesn't come through but it still escapes a little. I use air cleaners downstairs. He constantly sneaks smokes even though I forbid him to smoke in the house. My brother died 4 years ago at age 52 of sarcoidosis. At his death he was on oxygen 24/7 and could hardly breathe.
Avatar f tn If you do smoke and cant quit try to just smoke outside of by a window with a fan blowing it outside. Even cutting down on second hand smoke exposure will help.
1017020 tn?1251253324 But smoking is a huge culprit of developing COPD. Do as suggested. Do not smoke. And avoid second hand smoke and smoky environments. I do believe occupation can play a huge role in developing COPD as well. I worked around vats of hot glue, silicone, fiberglass, solder and worked in dusty warehouses. Of course, I was told that none of these things would harm me by employers. And possibly as posted, certain meds could cause COPD as well.
2006603 tn?1331329327 There are many risks with second hand smoke exposure even for ppl who are not pregnant. Second hand smoke can cause under developed lungs, increase the chance of sids, low birth weight, baby can develop asthma and a bunch of other things too. Its good your fiance doesn't smoke in the house or around you but he should get into the habbit of not smoking in the car either. The nicotine can settle into the fabrics which is the same as smoking a cigarette while being in the room with the baby.
Avatar f tn Look if you're that worried about your baby then seriously just stop going over there. Think about it if you will. You either be alone or go to your grandma's where you will inhale second hand smoke which is way worse than smoking itself. It's terrible that your gma is like that but if she is indeed like that then just stop going over there. She obviously doesn't care to stop so just stay home and try to stay occupied. Your babies health is of the utmost importance.
Avatar f tn he want smoke around me. So just look up the facts on second hand smoking then present your facts to your family & let them know your concerns regarding your unborn child.
Avatar f tn No. You can't get high from second hand weed smoke unless someone literally sits there and continuously blows smoke right in your face for countless hours....
Avatar f tn There are many causes of shortness of breath with exercise, including but not limited to asthma and COPD (the COPD unlikely in a non-smoker, even one exposed to passive cigarette smoke). Second hand smoke could aggravate many lung diseases causing shortness of breath, not just asthma and COPD. Given that you have taken a first step and had physical examination of your chest/lungs by your doctor and a chest X-ray.
1580703 tn?1651904887 I too have developed asthma at 57 years of age, or maybe earlier and didn't know it. I too like you thought it may have been from second hand smoke, but I don't think you can get this from second hand smoke after researching the subject. COPD on the other hand is associated with smoking. My condition on the other hand may be due to a hiatal hernia or either allergens, which I plan on getting checked out soon.
Avatar n tn t tell they were until this lady literally exhaled the smoke almost in my face as she walked by and I definitely inhaled some second hand smoke -- it was that strong. I literally had to get off the phone and ask them were they serious. I just got a new job and will be expected to take a drug test next week. I normally wouldn't think much of that episode, but am somewhat concerned because I definitely inhaled some of the second hand smoke as they walked by.
Avatar f tn Look into getting a small air cleaner with charcoal and HIPA filter, but be sure not to get an electronic zapping one or one that creates ozone. There are many available. The more you obsess about this, the more conscious you will be of every little smell of smoke.......many people can't tolerate perfumes for the same reason. Losing a job in todays economy should be a last resort.
Avatar f tn Make sure you continue your healthy habits and stay away from the second hand smoke. SIDS as well as second hand smoke dangers to you and you baby are important considerations in maintaining health for both of you. There are good prescription options for quitting smoking if your husband is willing to discuss them with his doctor. Chantix has had great success and well as Wellbutrin and quitting will keep him healthier for his baby too. Good luck!
Avatar m tn Do you smoke? Do you cough up mucous every day? I've read up that to qualify for COPD you must cough up mucous for at least 3 months over two consecutive years. Do you suffer a lot of chest infections like pneumonia or acute bronchitis? If your pulmonary function test came back fine and your x-ray was clear, then you may just have the warning signs of COPD. Now would be a good time to quite and you will most likely enjoy good health the rest of your days.
Avatar f tn She smoked 40 years ago for about 5 years. She was also exposed to second-hand smoke for years (dad). She gets bronchitis frequently. Her x-ray stated "pulmonary hypertension, hyperaerated lung fields with a mild increase of interstial markings possibly indicated COPD or Emphysema with a PAS change from 25-61 in one year." This sounds scary and she is stressing because her appt. isn't for a while. Could you explain any of this in simpler terms? Thanks so much.
393685 tn?1425812522 Ok .. second hand smoke .. both my parents smoked the first 5yrs of my life until my mom got double pneumonia and almost died .. this was late 60's ... she stopped cold turkey in the oxygen tent and my Dad stopped then, too .... that was a good 35 yrs ago .. but who knows what that smoke did to us kiddies back then?

Avatar m tn But I explained to her that second hand smoke is like I am still smoking. I might as well talk to a brick wall. If I get worse, then I will blame her, but I already done it to myself for smoking in the first place. Wish me luck.
1000946 tn?1253807847 I was diagnosed in Oct. 2007 with moderate stage COPD. Family doctor ran tests to confirm the diagnosis. Went for a second opinion to a pulmonologist. He also confirmed COPD. Am I still a smoker? Yes I am. Don't want to even guess how many cigarettes I smoke a day. I tried Chantix twice. Personally, I would not give that stuff to a dog. Side effects were not good at all. Known of several other people who have tried the Chantix. They had bad side effects as well. Have tried the patches.
Avatar f tn its jus smoking & second hand smoke you jus gotta worry about. more of second hand smoke tho.
Avatar n tn if i were you i would stay away from smokers or until they are done leave the area and return when their not smoking.we all know that second hand smoke is bad if not worse than smoking it yourself.i'm not saying give up your friends, just walk away when they smoke.i have copd and emphysema and i have to avoid being around people and areas where there is smoking involved.i quit smoking feb 16 2010 after smoking for forty plus years and two and a half to three packs a day.
Avatar m tn s when I was DX (diagnosed with severe asthma, / reactive airway disease. I NEVER did smoke...was exposed to 2nd hand smoke, but I don't remember it being too awful... I have a fairl long blog on here somewhere, lol... posted originally around the beginning of June...It explains that I broke most of the rules, as I was very young to be so sick. They actually diagnosed me with COPD in my early to mid 20's...this was very unusual...
Avatar n tn Do as much research as you can, and do everything in your power to live as healthy as you can. Stay out of smoky places, too, cuz the second hand smoke can cause further damage to your lungs. I know this must be emotionally tough for you. Reach out to people as much as you can to stay on an even keel. Wishing you the best!!!
518117 tn?1429276273 Three years ago I was given the spirometry and a chest xray. Given the diagnosis of COPD at age 50. I went for a second opinion with a pulmonologist. Diagnosis of COPD was confirmed. My only sibling a brother at the age of 47 was given the diagnosis of COPD as well. My brother was diagnosed approximately 6 months before my diagnosis. Our mother had idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. She passed away 4 months after a lung transplant.
