Common Questions and Answers about Second hand smoke and children

smoking

Avatar f tn I seat down and basically told him the results for second hand smoking and how that was much worse than actually smoking. So we came to the agreement that he would just smoke outside when we come over & he want smoke around me. So just look up the facts on second hand smoking then present your facts to your family & let them know your concerns regarding your unborn child.
1117137 tn?1345227905 i hear you on the second hand smoke, and i used to be a smoker too, i quit the day i found out i was pregnant - and it wasn't hard cuz i had noticed a week before we found out they weren't doing anything for me- and actually making me turn "green" But my husband still smokes... and i can't stand it!!
2006603 tn?1331329327 There are many risks with second hand smoke exposure even for ppl who are not pregnant. Second hand smoke can cause under developed lungs, increase the chance of sids, low birth weight, baby can develop asthma and a bunch of other things too. Its good your fiance doesn't smoke in the house or around you but he should get into the habbit of not smoking in the car either. The nicotine can settle into the fabrics which is the same as smoking a cigarette while being in the room with the baby.
Avatar f tn You and baby are fine unless the smell makes you physically ill.
Avatar f tn Look if you're that worried about your baby then seriously just stop going over there. Think about it if you will. You either be alone or go to your grandma's where you will inhale second hand smoke which is way worse than smoking itself. It's terrible that your gma is like that but if she is indeed like that then just stop going over there. She obviously doesn't care to stop so just stay home and try to stay occupied. Your babies health is of the utmost importance.
Avatar m tn People actually develop an allergic reaction to cigarette smoke, and even without it not having clean air can aggravate the sinuses and lungs. However, if you take a person with an allergy out of the environment of that allergy their symptoms get better and if they're away from it long enough the symptoms usually disappear. Cigarettes are also known to cause havoc on a persons immune system, making it weaker...
203342 tn?1328737207 I was talking with my quit smoking coach yesterday and she told me this type of smoke (on clothes, in cars) now has a name - third hand smoke which can also be dangerous. Try going to American Cancer Society for more information. I bet they have something on this.
Avatar n tn t tell they were until this lady literally exhaled the smoke almost in my face as she walked by and I definitely inhaled some second hand smoke -- it was that strong. I literally had to get off the phone and ask them were they serious. I just got a new job and will be expected to take a drug test next week. I normally wouldn't think much of that episode, but am somewhat concerned because I definitely inhaled some of the second hand smoke as they walked by.
Avatar n tn And as to second-hand smoke, please note that insurance companies do not raise rates for clients exposed to second-hand smoke (and remember, they are not in the business of losing money).. They do raise rates for smokers. Next we will hear that second-hand smoke is responsible for volcanic eruptions.
Avatar f tn We are all low birth weight babies. Smoking was likely the cause. Second hand smoke is just as dangerous, so if avoid it and ask people to step away when they smoke.
Avatar f tn its jus smoking & second hand smoke you jus gotta worry about. more of second hand smoke tho.
Avatar f tn s only a correlational study, so there is no proof of cause and effect, but all we know is that there is a link between the two things(second hand smoke and behavioral problems). Though I wouldn't doubt that the chemicals in second hand smoke can alter a child's brain chemistry, which could easily lead to behavioral problems. If you google "effect of second hand smoke on children" you'll get many results about this topic. It is also posted on Webmd, among other sites.
1580703 tn?1651904887 I too have developed asthma at 57 years of age, or maybe earlier and didn't know it. I too like you thought it may have been from second hand smoke, but I don't think you can get this from second hand smoke after researching the subject. COPD on the other hand is associated with smoking. My condition on the other hand may be due to a hiatal hernia or either allergens, which I plan on getting checked out soon.
Avatar f tn Also second hand smoke is bad too; children who grow up in a house with smokers are more likely to be sick and have asthma problems during childhood than those who live with nonsmokers. I know how hard it is to stop smoking, but you have to do your best. Try to remove yourself from people who smoke, if they live with you ask them to start smoking outside. (Especially if they will still live you after the baby is born. Second hand smoke can kill.
Avatar n tn Well first of you shouldn't be around him when he smokes and I hope you aren't because second hand smoke is just as bad or worse and he should know that as well. So if he cares for his unborn child he should care ! Otherwise I feel u should stay away for your babies health, u do t wanna risk anything.
Avatar n tn I fit the profile!
7366593 tn?1400009626 s risk of developing respiratory (lung) problems. Second hand smoke has been shown to be just as harmful. Cannabis has been shown to lower the user's IQ (intelligence) by about 10 points, so it is most likely negatively affects fetal brain development. I do hope that you are eating right and exercising but you also want to stay away from all unneeded drugs and alcohol while you are pregnant and nursing or mothering young children.
Avatar f tn My partner still smokes and I get his second hand smoke I tell him not to but he says its hard lol I'm early on in pregnancy like 14 weeks and find it kinda disrespectful at times so I can totally understand where you are coming from hun
Avatar f tn Second hand smoke is just as bad for you, and your baby as it would be if your were smoking yourself. You need to ask her to smoke outside if you're there. The fumes go into everything - fabrics etc so it lingers and isn't good.
Avatar f tn I think its both positive and negative. It teaches the kids the dangers of smoking/second hand smoke and the problems it can cause as well as the result od death. As for the negative, the kids with the smoking patents are now worrying about losing their parent(s) due to the day care. Im an ex smoker myself.
595141 tn?1239971814 I don't mean to laugh at your problem.........you just remind me of someone I know. I can't believe you're putting yourself through all this because you smoke! Even more difficult to believe you've got your knickers in such a knot about this that you are taking a VERY serious medication to cope with this "horrible" secret! Why the hell are you afraid of your children!?
Avatar f tn BUT, yes , even a little can ahrm the baby and like others said, second hand smoke is very bad as well. Good Luck and keep up the quitting, and ask hubby to smoke outdoors only.
