Common Questions and Answers about Safety of valtrex in pregnancy

valtrex

Avatar n tn I was told that I would probably never have another outbreak since this was my first and no way of telling when I accuired the virus.I was given 30 days of Valtrex twice a day. There have been no other symptoms or outbreaks in the past 5 months. My partner received testing and he was negative. We would like to keep it that way and are unsure if or how to continue this portion of our relationship safely .Is this possible?
Avatar f tn s with genital herpes ( regardless of type ) to take daily suppressive therapy in the pregnancy doses for the last month of pregnancy to help decrease the odds of having an active lesion at the time of delivery so that a vaginal delivery can be had. For valtrex it's 500mg 2x/day and acyclovir it's 400mg 3x/day. We have a study that shows that there is no risk to the mother or the fetus when suppressive therapy is done for the last month of pregnancy.
Avatar n tn My male friend is SO scared when using a condom that he will not go into me very far for fear of getting it on the unprotected part of him. Obviously I do not have sex if I have leisons, which I have not had for a long time. Also what is his chance of getting it on his hands if he touches me there and he has no cuts or anything on his fingers? Are the chances the same for oral sex? I feel like a leper!
233552 tn?1228319699 You can take valtrex while pregnant for shingles. It's safety during pregnancy has been pretty well established at this point plus we have 25+ years of acyclovir too to go on ( valtrex is an acyclovir prodrug ). The concern is if you don't treat this promptly you have a higher risk of having phn ( post herpetic neuralgia ) which would make you quite miserable for the rest of your pregnancy if not longer.
Avatar n tn Okay, let your docotor know that your current fose of valtrex isn't helping the outbreaks. They might have to up your dose. You probably already know this, but if you have an outbreak near labor or during labor, then they have to do a c-section for baby's safety.
Avatar f tn Under these circumstances where you do not have knowledge of his status I think it is better to err on the side of safety.
1932244 tn?1323292210 For this reason, you should be sure to consult with a high-risk pregnancy specialist or other experienced OB/GYN early in your next pregnancy and ideally before conception. It is very difficult to precisely confirm a diagnosis without examination and investigations and the answer is based on the medical information provided. For exact diagnosis, you are requested to consult your doctor. I sincerely hope that helps. Take care and please do keep me posted on how you are doing.
Avatar f tn I would recommend you waiting till your in your second trimester to start exercising cause the baby's so small and fragile any wrong move could cause your body to try to expel the baby but it is safe as long as your body is excepting it & your comfortable don't push yourself to hard or lift to heavy I'm 25 weeks & still work out like a champ every other day
Avatar f tn thanks for your comments.... my doctors are the ones recommending the valtrex, including the increased amount, but it definitely makes me nervous. I definitely plan to go with the c-section if they don't have any more answers for me with my next appointment. This is my 2nd child, and I didn't have any of these problems the 1st time, but they still had me take Valtrex the last month of pregnancy due to my history.
Avatar n tn Valtrex is an acyclovir prodrug. Greatly simplified that means that you swallow valtrex and your body turns it into acyclovir. Because of this unique delivery system you get more active acyclovir into your body with valtrex than you do with regular ole acyclovir ( 55% vs 15% ). Because it packs a bigger punch at one time - you don't have to take it as often. Otherwise it's the same medication as good ole el cheapo acyclovir.
Avatar f tn The only times I stopped suppressive therapy once I started it were because of pregnancy and for 6 months I was off while I participated in a research study. I have no plans on stopping it again anytime soon.
Avatar f tn most ob/gyns advise the use of condoms as well as the b/c pills to help even more with the prevention of pregnancy.
Avatar f tn have you discussed with your obgyn going on the pregnancy doses of valtrex ( 500mg 2x/day ) for the last month of pregnancy too?
Avatar n tn You can sleep on right side as well . You can try doing it now though to get used to it . Later on in pregnancy if you wake up on your back just roll over baby is ok . He or she will most likely make you uncomfortable before anything bad happens your body will signal a response to you most likely . I had thos worry and sometimes I still wake up on my back just get used it your side sleeping now while its still comfortable for you .
Avatar f tn Normally it is safe thru your whole pregnancy but it would be best to talk to your doctor since you did have spotting! Need to make sure the baby is ok.
Avatar f tn In general, drugs such as Ultram (or tramadol) are not recommended during pregnancy or during breastfeeding because there is a lack of safety information. This does not mean that it will necessarily cause problems for the fetus or baby, but since the information is not known, it might. Animal studies have shown that the drug crosses to the developing fetus, but the danger to a developing human fetus is not known.
Avatar n tn I did have a lot of extra ultrasounds in the beginning. Then I had a 12 week ultrasound, a down syndrome and a 20 week long ultrasound. All was normal. The 20 week ultrasound was unremarkable. They said it was perfect and it was an hour long so they measured and looked for everything:microenchapaly, hrdroencapahy, etc. Is there still a chance the baby could have caught something else (ie. blindness, lesions), or would it probably suffer from multiple birth defects?
Avatar f tn however, condoms do not guarantee safety, the herpes sore or lesion is not always located in an area covered by the condom. but here are some steps to greatly reduce the risk of infection: 1. tell your partner. it is important to understand what herpes is; how it can be prevented; which precautions are best; what are the social and emotional impacts of herpes. Try to avoid any sexual contact if you are infected (abstinence) 2.
Avatar f tn My outbreaks are in the middle of my back and no where else. I was misdiagnosed with Shingles when this first occurred. My question is this, since my outbreaks are on my back does this mean that I shed only from that area or am I still shedding vaginally as well? I take Valtrex daily as well.
Avatar f tn I was diagnosed with shingles after going to er this morning, i am 38 weeks pregnant, i thought i had poison ivy around my eye but was in allot of pain so went to emergency room to get it checked out, they put me on eye drops and valtrex pills, does anyone know anything that could help our of any complications w pregnancy?
Avatar f tn I am due on Wednesday and when I woke up this morning I noticed a little bit of blood on my toilet paper. I checked my vag out in the mirror and noticed what looked like a cut (straight line) near the top part. I called my OB and went in for an appointment. The doctor looked at it and said it just looks like I cut or scratched myself. He performed an internal exam and then looked at my chart and realized that I am on Valtrex because I had an herpes outbreak about 5 years ago.
Avatar f tn no she is not pregnant.
Avatar m tn Hi! I'm not sure I can be of as much help here as some others can, since I'm new to the forum, and come here for advice myself. However, I am currently just over 34 weeks pregnant with my 3rd baby, and only recently (within the last month or so) learned of the dangers of neonatal herpes. To say it has had me concerned is an understatement!
