Avatar f tn 2) print out an article by Steve Tyring on the long term safety of acyclovir and see if your doctor will change his mind. I am attaching the entire abstract if it will fit, along with the reference, so you can go find it and print out the whole thing for him. Good luck. J Infect Dis. 2002 Oct 15;186 Suppl 1:S40-6. Valacyclovir for herpes simplex virus infection: long-term safety and sustained efficacy after 20 years' experience with acyclovir. Tyring SK, Baker D, Snowden W.
Avatar f tn My concern is that i see conflicting things about the safety of acyclovir while pregnant on the internet, some sites say its safe others say it's not approved by FDA to use while pregnant and so should be avoided. But why would doctors, including my own, offer it (or Valtrex) as an option if it's not safe? Oh, also, what is the usually dosage amount that is considered safe while pregnant? I've seen 400mg 3x a day, but not sure if this amount is ok while pregnant?
655746 tn?1242084567 In a large study of over 1500 couples in your situation, with the steps you are taking (condoms for vaginal sex, avoidance of sex during outbreaks and suppressive antiviral therapy) persons such as yourself experienced about a 50% reduction in their rates of HSV acquisition to less than 3% per year. In addition, it is reasonable to think that at least some of the participants in that study may not have taken the preventative steps perfectly.
Avatar m tn My daughter has been HSV2 positive for appx three years but has not had any outbreaks since the first year. She is in her last five weeks of pregnancy and her doctor has prescribed acyclovir 400mg once a day. My understanding has been that acyclovir is a twice a day medication. Is the medication going to benefit her at this dosage or does it need to be changed? Thank you!
233552 tn?1228319699 You can take valtrex while pregnant for shingles. It's safety during pregnancy has been pretty well established at this point plus we have 25+ years of acyclovir too to go on ( valtrex is an acyclovir prodrug ). The concern is if you don't treat this promptly you have a higher risk of having phn ( post herpetic neuralgia ) which would make you quite miserable for the rest of your pregnancy if not longer.
Avatar f tn Under these circumstances where you do not have knowledge of his status I think it is better to err on the side of safety.
Avatar n tn herpes antivirals are not stressful on the liver or the kidneys. acyclovir has 25 years of non-stop suppressive therapy use behind it now that proves its safety.
Avatar f tn Ask your doctor about going on suppression (taking acyclovir daily) for the rest of your pregnancy if you want to help prevent outbreaks. You could also get a prescription for acyclovir to have it on hand to take when you start noticing symptoms of an outbreak. The sooner you take it, the better.
1932244 tn?1323292210 For this reason, you should be sure to consult with a high-risk pregnancy specialist or other experienced OB/GYN early in your next pregnancy and ideally before conception. It is very difficult to precisely confirm a diagnosis without examination and investigations and the answer is based on the medical information provided. For exact diagnosis, you are requested to consult your doctor. I sincerely hope that helps. Take care and please do keep me posted on how you are doing.
Avatar f tn JMHO. That being said chicken pox is dangerous in pregnancy and can cause complications in the mother (pneumonia for starters) as well as in the fetus. I absolutely would take what the dr prescribe me since it is treatment for chicken pox in pregnancy.
Avatar f tn I would recommend you waiting till your in your second trimester to start exercising cause the baby's so small and fragile any wrong move could cause your body to try to expel the baby but it is safe as long as your body is excepting it & your comfortable don't push yourself to hard or lift to heavy I'm 25 weeks & still work out like a champ every other day
Avatar f tn most ob/gyns advise the use of condoms as well as the b/c pills to help even more with the prevention of pregnancy.
Avatar n tn You can sleep on right side as well . You can try doing it now though to get used to it . Later on in pregnancy if you wake up on your back just roll over baby is ok . He or she will most likely make you uncomfortable before anything bad happens your body will signal a response to you most likely . I had thos worry and sometimes I still wake up on my back just get used it your side sleeping now while its still comfortable for you .
Avatar f tn Normally it is safe thru your whole pregnancy but it would be best to talk to your doctor since you did have spotting! Need to make sure the baby is ok.
Avatar f tn In general, drugs such as Ultram (or tramadol) are not recommended during pregnancy or during breastfeeding because there is a lack of safety information. This does not mean that it will necessarily cause problems for the fetus or baby, but since the information is not known, it might. Animal studies have shown that the drug crosses to the developing fetus, but the danger to a developing human fetus is not known.
Avatar m tn Acyclovir doses for the last month of pregnancy are 400mg 3x/day. You need the higher doses because of the natural immunosuppression of pregnancy.
Avatar f tn s with genital herpes ( regardless of type ) to take daily suppressive therapy in the pregnancy doses for the last month of pregnancy to help decrease the odds of having an active lesion at the time of delivery so that a vaginal delivery can be had. For valtrex it's 500mg 2x/day and acyclovir it's 400mg 3x/day. We have a study that shows that there is no risk to the mother or the fetus when suppressive therapy is done for the last month of pregnancy.
Avatar n tn Also one other question, Since people estimate the rate of hsv-2 in gay men is very high, what if I tested positive for hsv-2 and I slept with my boyfriend more? since he is positive and symptomatic and Im hypothetically positive but asymptomatic, would I have greater chances of breaking out and getting symptoms?
Avatar n tn You can find tons of information in the Archives of the STD-Expert side of this forum to get your questions answered. Essentially, taking daily medication will decrease shedding at least 50%, but it probably works even better than this. There are no documented cases of somebody getting herpes on their hands or fingers by touching the genitals of an infected person. With medication, there is zero risk. Oral sex is considered safe sex as long as you don't have a visible outbreak.
Avatar f tn no she is not pregnant.
Avatar f tn why makes you hesitant to take a herpes antiviral? We have over 25 years of safety with acyclovir alone ( that actually includes folks taking it daily for 20+ years too ). There's a terrific article by dr stephen tyring on the safety of valtrex and acyclovir I can recommend if you are interested in more reading at any point. As to why an ob both places at the same time - as I said, probably coincidence more than anything.
Avatar n tn Has anyone noticed that there is a shortage of Acyclovir in the US? I live on the East coast and have found that it is very hard to get my prescription re-filled. I take 400mg x2 a day for suppression and I have only been able to get 200mg. With some difficulty I might add. It isn't the end of the world but I am concerned about the supply in a month when I go for another re-fill. I read on the FDA web site that there is currently a shortage. http://www.fda.
Avatar n tn My question is why would I get blisters a second time in 2 weeks? Since it is a weekend, should I start the Acyclovir again, and can it do me any harm if I do? Being a weekend, I can't get in touch with the physician, and I now have 2 opposing medical opinions, from my physician to stop the Acyclovir, and one from the physician at the urgent care clinic on 8/26 to start the medication again. Thanks for your help.
Avatar n tn To clarify, no lesion culture was done at the doctor because there were/are no lesions. I went in because of the tingling/itching, and the acyclovir was prescribed as a preventative given my known potential exposure. The doctor concurred that transmission was unlikely, but given the safety of the medication saw it as a reasonable treatment. My partner was a girlfriend of ~6mo. I had a baseline type specific IGG done early in the relationship (negative both HSV1 and HSV2).
Avatar f tn At that time, I was given Famvir. Then no more outbreaks. In August of 2011, I went to planned parenthood because I had a new boyfriend and wanted to try my best not to pass it to him. They gave me acyclovir 2 times a day. I took it for a month and ran out for a couple of days before I got a refill and I had a very itchy rash across the right side of my waist.
