Common Questions and Answers about Rsv in transplant patients

rsv

Avatar m tn it proves nicely that even high doses of RSV are unlikely to have any effect on HCV replication in vivo in man. How so? On page 187 Fig 2 you will see the effect of increasing micromols of RSV on fold replication of the HCV construct, readout by the luciferase assay. On page 188 similarlily in fig 4 the effect on the subgenomic replicon cells. RSV in micromols/Liter vs fold replication enhancement. Good work, we assume.
Avatar m tn His gastroenterologist is totally ignorant of the basic facts of liver transplantation. Most centers transplant to age 70 normally. Most of us liver transplant patients are in our 50s-60s when we get our transplants. I would not trust anything that gastro has to say if he is so misinformed about the basics of liver transplant. I would get copies of all my records and never see him again. His opinions are not based on any knowledge. Gastros are not liver specialist first of all.
Avatar m tn The transplant coordinator also reviews the in-depth Consent for Evaluation for Liver Transplant, which patients must understand and sign before they can proceed with a transplant evaluation. Finally, the transplant coordinator outlines the medical tests and consultations that must be performed as part of the evaluation process.
Avatar m tn Prescribing Medications in Patients With Cirrhosis Conclusions The safe use of medications in patients with CLD(chronic liver disease) is an ongoing challenge for prescribers and patients alike. This becomes especially true in patients with cirrhosis, in whom significant changes can occur in the metabolism and handling of various agents, specifically those medications which undergo first-pass metabolism or are metabolised by the CYP3A enzymatic pathway.
Avatar m tn Hi Doctor, what is your opinion of when Incivek will be approved for transplant patients? Are they running or planning trials for post transplant patients or how does it normally work to get the process approved in this case?
Avatar m tn New more gentle treatment should be available in a year and even better treatments are coming in 2-3 years. I had a transplant 10 years ago, still have Hep C and need to make a similar decision of doing triple tx now or wait. I did double tx immediately after tx, the results were not very good. Better results were 5 years when I did it again, I became UND, but relapsed. I haven't tried triple tx. Here is the information on new coming drugs from Gilead. Discuss it with you doctor.
Avatar n tn I would still question the advisability of steroids in an HCV setting. I know that the trend in liver transplant patients with HCV is to wean them off steroids soon post transplant and in more and more transplant facilities steroids are not being administered at all because HCV damage accelerates in patients who take steroids. The most definitive test of the condition of the liver is liver biopsy where a sample of the liver tissue is removed and examined with state of the art equipment.
179856 tn?1333547362 The final treatment option is a liver transplant. A person whose primary tumor is less than 5 centimeters in diameter, or who has no more than three small tumors (each less than 3 cm), can get on the transplant list. However, only about 7,000 livers become available for transplant each year, and there are about 55,000 people on the waiting list in the United States. Preference is given to people who will have the best prognosis after transplantation.
Avatar f tn 8 percent of the patients in the control group had experienced at least one outcome. Patients in the treated group had significantly lower blood levels of the hepatitis C virus and less liver inflammation. However, there was no major difference in rates of any of the primary outcomes between groups." Take care and let us know how your dad is doing and what you learn from getting a second opinion. Best of luck to you and your family.
Avatar m tn When a person applies at a transplant center to be listed for transplant they agree that all changes in meds, vitamins, supplements, diet and any medical procedures are first approved by the hepatologist first before they make any change. People can and have been removed temporarily and permanently from waiting lists for not being compliant with these rules. Good luck to her.
Avatar n tn It usually manifest itself as a cold in adults and older children, but can cause serious problems in infants. RSV can cause lower respitory infections, breathing problems, pneumonia or even death. According to statistics, over 125,000 infants are hospitalized annually with Respiratory Syncytial Virus, resulting in more than 500 deaths. RSV can be contracted by placing your hand in your mouth after you have come in contact with an infected person or surface.
Avatar m tn Felix and others are now trying to raise enough for new organs through NTAF, a nonprofit organization based in Pennsylvania formerly known as the National Transplant Assistance Fund that helps transplant patients pay for their medical costs. National coverage of their plight has already led to more than $100,000 in donations for some of the patients affected by the budget cuts. The Felix family is also planning a yard sale this weekend so he does not lose the chance to get another liver.
5032487 tn?1365824021 That's great to hear Mike, thanks for posting it! I was just reading: Here's the lingering trouble: Patients with liver failure and would-be donors are not distributed evenly around the country. And the nation is divided into 11 transplant regions that have wide variations in patients and available organs, between regions and within them.
Avatar f tn My 11 week has rsv .. He was full term .. Has any other mother had this in a infant ..
593530 tn?1263847957 I brought Brody to his pediatrician last week because he was very congested. After a nose swab was tested it was determined that he has RSV. Since it's a virus it can't be treated with antibiotics, so she instructed me to get a cool mist humidifier and keep his nasal pasages clear by using saline solution. The only symptom he's had is the congestion. There's no fever, coughing, mucous coming out, etc.
Avatar m tn A 12-week pilot study providing safety and efficacy data, this study was just published in Liver transplantation Dec 7 2012, full text below....."a remarkable number of patients (8/9) had an undetectable viral load at week 12.......triple therapy with TVR has promising antiviral efficacy in LT patients with respect to treatment weeks 4 and 12.

Please contact a doctor I honestly don't think he should be home my son was two months old when he had it, and my husband ask if we can go home with him and they told us some pretty scary stuff .
Avatar f tn Jaxon, I had my liver transplant 2 years ago in April and my biggest problem is a weakness in my abdominal muscles and also in my lower to middle back. I cannot stand or sit for very long, it is not really pain as much as it is extreme weakness. I spoke to a Physical Therapist and she thinks it could be the weak abdominal muscles causing my back to be pulled into a bad posture and putting the strain on it. I have scheduled an appointment with the orthopedic doctor for the end of the month.
Avatar n tn Are you aware that untreated hepatitis C in post transplant patient will rapidly cause liver damage, cirrhosis and liver failure in many transplant patients within 5-10 years post transplant? They wouldn't want you to treat if you don't already have some stage of fibrosis a;ready occurring occurring. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- What are the possible consequences of HCV infection in liver transplant recipients?
Avatar f tn It is very difficult for patients to get through 48 weeks of treatment with servere anemia, neutropenia, and low platelet counts. As the 3 drug therapy has more severe blood level issues in post transplant patients. Often helper drugs are needed and some times transfusions. Theoretically the success rates should be higher with 3 drug therapy if a patient can complete treatment. SVR rates with peg-INF and Ribavirin are only 30%.
Avatar n tn In general, it is true that the virus is more aggressive in transplanted liver, and progression to cirrhosis is much faster. But there are exceptions. I am doing a research project in a transplant center right now, and found some interesting cases. One man with hepatitis C developed cirrhosis and was transplanted 18 years ago. He never got treatment after transplant. He has yearly biopsy and is still at stage 0. Somehow, the virus didn't like this particular liver.
