Common Questions and Answers about Ritalin medication

ritalin

Avatar n tn Hi, I was recently diagnosed with inattentive type ADD not too long ago but i was also diagnosed as Major Depressive with lots of anxiety (nothing official with the anxiety, but it was definitely there) well over a year ago. The first script i was given was generic Ritalin and it worked very well... well enough to completely get off anti-depressants and for most of that anxiety to go away.
Avatar f tn I hardly can tell that I am taking an ADD medication when I take this weak Ritalin. I even took 80mg and felt nothing. I hate to do it, but I am going to call my Psych. and see if he will give me my usual Adderall script now. I hope he will. I can offer to exchange it for this worthless bottle of Ritalin.
Avatar f tn I have trouble concentrating, especially at work, and a number of my friends (whom are nurses) have suggested ritalin... but through my searches on the medication, it seems it's not available for adults? (only children) I was wondering if it's available for adults? If Ritalin would help with concentration problems? What would the mg be for an adult dose? Thanks.
Avatar m tn Ritalin can cause temporary movement disorders such as akathesia (which can be treated with a side effect pill). However on occassion it can also cause some long term movement disorders which include at times tardive dyskinesia (and a variant of it called tardive tourretism) for more information google "Patient Education Tardive Dyskinesia" (as the site itself says "some of these medications may be medically neccessary").
Avatar m tn I have MS and this is why I am asking about Ritalin instead of the 600 mg of provigil i take every Morning
Avatar f tn Effect on the developing brain — The long-term impact of ADD / ADHD medication on the youthful, developing brain is not yet known. Some researchers are concerned that the use of drugs such as Ritalin in children and teens might interfere with normal brain development. Heart-related problems — ADD / ADHD stimulant medications have been found to cause sudden death in children and adults with heart conditions.
Avatar m tn Ritalin for Adults With ADHD. Ritalin for ADHD treatment in adults has not been adequately studied, meaning that no large studies have been conducted on the benefits and risks of using it to treat adult ADHD. However, healthcare providers may prescribe Ritalin for adult ADHD in certain situations. This is considered an "off-label" of the drug.
Avatar n tn we are noticing behavioral outbursts like she had prior to treatment, however they are not as severe. I really want this medication to work. Can ritalin be taken 3 times a day?
1497278 tn?1289708073 Ritalin still exists???? Ritalin was basically banned from pharmacies in Puerto Rico!! Ritalin is a very dangerous drug, it causes damages to the nervous system, it makes your body retain water and it makes people to have nervous tics.
Avatar f tn Has anyone ever been prescribed Ritalin for Migraines? What is the thought about this? I am looking for alternative approaches for my chronic migraines, usually 2 migraines per week, 1 of which is completely debilitating. I tried a 5mg dose of Ritalin (1x day) for a week and it was a migraine free week (despite high stress and sleep deprivation due to work).

Avatar n tn Adderall is not the only medication. You might you doctor to try a different medicine such as Ritalin or Metadate CD. These are still stimulants, but in another family of stimulants. Good luck.

Avatar f tn She told me that she was not born with it, that while on medication as a child..one of them being ritalin..it cause damage to her nervous system or something and ended up with mild tourettes. Was wondering if anyone has ever heard of this happening before. I thought tourettes was something you were born with. Also she says that Dr.'s have told her there is 0% chance of her passing it on to her children since she was not born with it.

Avatar n tn I've been on Ritalin for about three years now. I've noticed that if I forget to take it, I get really, really anxious, almost paranoid and I also feel exhausted. And for the past maybe three months, I've noticed that later on in the day, I start feeling like I haven't taken it at all. I have never, ever, ever taken Ritalin to stay up all night or crushed it and snorted it or anything. Is this withdrawal? Can I be dependent on Ritalin even if I always took it as directed?
Avatar n tn My son has been on ritalin for 12 months he is now 6 and the last week he has just developed eye movements that i was concerned might be a tic. He is extremely anxious , especially when on his medication in strange unfamiliar settings but does quite well at school and has lots of friends. He has been out of routine of late with school holidays and 10 weeks ago had a increase in medication to 1 tab in the morning 1/2 at lunch and 1/2 at 3.30 pm.
704043 tn?1298056844 I think that methylphenidate (Ritalin) is simply one form of amphetamine. I took Provigil occasionally for a year, then it seemed to stop working so well. I then took Ritalin, which is different but worked very well for me. The reason I was taking it was for "attention and concentration deficits related to chronic dizziness," as my neuro put it. Ritalin totally lifted the veil of "fog" and allowed me to concentrate, think, be productive, and carry on a conversation.
Avatar n tn My son took Concerta for several years and I noticed a change in his attitude. He would become so aggresive that he would actually hit myself. The doctor was upset when I told him I was not going to allow my son to take that medication any more. Now we are having problems with his attitude towards his school work. Good luck to you.
Avatar n tn We know this associated in some way to being on the Ritalin because he does not do it when he is off the medication. The only answer the pediatrician seems to have is to up the mg of Ritalin but it has not worked! Are these symptoms of another disorder? Should we see a psychologist? Is there a better medication?
Avatar n tn The last time I had wanted adderrall all I could get my hands on was Ritalin, which is from what I was told was pretty much the same as adderrall, as well as similar dosages. When I took the 40mg ritalin I concluded that it was pretty much equivalent to a 30mg adderrall. So anyway back to that night! I decided I was going to need help staying up for that long, I took two of the 40mg Ritalin. These alone would have probably been fine, but I made a foolish mistake afterward.
636964 tn?1222990085 My husband recently decided that he had ADD so he went to his doctor and got prescribed Ritalin. Ever since he's been on it, he's been a zombie and emotionless. We barely make love anymore and he's also very sensative about things. Now I've heard that sometimes if you really don't have ADD, the medication will affect you different then for someone who really has it. I've discussed this problem several times with my husband but nothing has changed.
416668 tn?1241742794 Since then, I have tried Provigil, which worked at first then seemed to make me even more tired! I was also tried on ritalin which did the same thing. Now I have been taking dextroamphetamine for about 2-1/2 months. At first it gave me incredible migraines and tension in my neck and shoulders. My doctor thinks that my body has adjusted to the medication because I no longer have these symptoms. Now my left lower eyelid twitches nonstop and has been for at least 3-4 weeks now.
Avatar f tn Hey, I just found this community. I've been fainting since I was 14 from Neurocardiogenic Syncope. I'm 24 now and living off SSI. I moved back in with my parents after failing college. I've tried salt tablets, gatorade, proamitine, florinef, atenolol, klonopin, paxil, ritalin, etc. Right now I'm on ritalin and florinef. The first 5 years were rough, but managable. The next 2 years I began to think I was growing out of it.
Avatar m tn Since your doc apparently needs some continuing ed on the topic. Let them k ow there is a SPECIFIC test you can order to actually detect the correct medication. Its called a "Ritalin (Methylphenidate) Urine Drug Test" (imagine that.) And again, this test is NOT part of the standard urinalysis (drug screen).
