Common Questions and Answers about Ritalin effects on the brain

ritalin

Avatar m tn One of the side effects of Ritalin is paresthesia, probably because of circulation problems to the extremities. This made me think that Ritalin also reduced blood flow to other parts of the body, possible the brain. This idea alarmed me, and made me search PubMed frantically. Here are a few studies I found: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/1992832 https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.
704043 tn?1298056844 I think that methylphenidate (Ritalin) is simply one form of amphetamine. I took Provigil occasionally for a year, then it seemed to stop working so well. I then took Ritalin, which is different but worked very well for me. The reason I was taking it was for "attention and concentration deficits related to chronic dizziness," as my neuro put it. Ritalin totally lifted the veil of "fog" and allowed me to concentrate, think, be productive, and carry on a conversation.
Avatar f tn However, recently I came across a study that showed that long term use of the med impairs brain cells so I stopped abruptly. It has been years since I have been completely off the drug and I noticed that I have lost alot of my personality. I used to be so bubbly talkative and hammy. I no longer possess any of those qualities anymore, among other issues and I feel that they may be due to the long term use of the drug.
Avatar f tn Today I did not take the Ritalin and felt no spasms. On the other hand, my doc told me to take the Ritalin constantly. I tried to take it only when I needed to concentrate at work and not on days I don´t have to work. He told me it is not good to interrupt intake like that. I am very interested in knowing your experience with Adderal and Wellbutrin. Did your doctor check your clinical history to be sure that there is no high risk of seizures?
636964 tn?1222990085 Try some good supplements instead but ask your Doctor how your husband should come off it, if that is a way he wants to go, the symptoms you mention do sound like side effects of the Ritalin,
Avatar n tn i did a 10 page study of drugs like this and ritalin and the effects it has on children, their body and their brain, it is nothing good to put a young child on. the dr can wean her from it though. at the time that i did this study, medical journals said that ritalin at that time, was the most misdiagnosed drug. that 95% of the WORLDS supply of it was used right here in the U.S.
Avatar f tn sorry to go on, thought i would shed some light on some of the effects of Ritalin!
429700 tn?1308007823 s been any at all) of MS patients using Provigil to have this option available. The Ritalin is my last stop before retiring on disability. I don't know if my doctor trusts some of the Internet sites offering discounted generic Provigil enough for him to write a prescription. I'm sure he is concerned about where I order the medicine from if I will be getting quality medicine or not. Deb- a little flustered today.
Avatar f tn I started researching trough the internet about ritalin addiction and effects when trying to quit, and I got really scared. I don't know what to do, but I am in serious trouble. I know writing this post and asking for solution is not the way to solve this problem. As I have mentioned, the exam is in one month so I must keep studying when with poor concentration. I obviously don't want to go to a detox center, not on this moment.
Avatar n tn by the way, can anyone tell me the long term side effects and the possible health hazard of add/adhd pills like adderall and ritalin?
968560 tn?1307451498 My gastro called a hepatologist that is associated with the pegasys program. He said when the the effects get to be life threatining. It would be a wise decision to administer stimulamts. which by the way provigil is classified a a stimulant also' I thank God that according to you most patients symptoms arent bad enough to warrent any add meds.
Avatar f tn ve got a good link (if I can find it) on what happens if you treat the seratonin side stronger then the norepinephrine side and the effects. Got a feeling that this may be what is going on with you. Did you always have trouble sleeping and anxiety - or did it get worse with the different meds?
Avatar f tn t even remember if I had had a problem before I started the new med....So please, be careful with all the meds out there....the side effects can be worse than the disease!!!!! I hate the thought of trying yet another new med but I really do need something to help w/ fatigue....I'm having a lot of trouble making it through 12-15hr workdays......My neuro suggested maybe trying Ritalin.....he says Provigil is the best, but it is kind of pricey even w/ my insurance.......
Avatar m tn Sometimes it may cause due to pressure on ur brain...mean if u studing than..study pressure if ur job problem ..
Avatar f tn This went on for years, at the request of the specialists. Once my mom stopped giving him the Ritalin he started growing like a weed, and was back to normal but had developed multiple tics because of the treatment. The doctors ignored the tic "side effect" and told him that he would grow out of it. He was recently diagnosed with mild TS, a side effect of the Ritalin. As a side note, I myself was diagnosed with mild TS + chronic insomnia recently, developing it at 16.
Avatar f tn You may want to see if you can get a hold of a copy of the August 'Pediatrics' magazine ,there is an article regarding ADHD drugs given to children ,calls to poison centers are up 75% in the last 8 years and most come from affects of the drugs given for ADHD even the drug enforcement agency has issued a Warning.Read 'The Cociane of the Playground' and see for your self.
Avatar f tn it has also been shown by experts that a good food supplement of anti oxidants VitC and Vit B Complex work as well as Ritalin with no side effects ..You dont say the age of the child , but masturbation is considered normal behavior amongst most children unless its excessive .
Avatar f tn Has anyone else developed a sore throat or cough on Adderall XR? If so does regular Adderall have the same effect. I’ve recently (about 4-5 months ago) started ADHD meds after being off for about 8 years. I suffer from EDS (excessive daytime sleepiness) in addition to ADHD of the primarily inattentive type. I find vyvanse and/or Ritalin to be helpful in terms of making me alert and functional which of course has the secondary benefit of improving my executive function issues.
Avatar n tn After both episodes it seemed like it took my brain several months to recover, the first time the episode happened in 2009 it took me over 10 months to get back to 100% normal. This recent episode happened in July and im still not totally well, although much improved. Do manic episodes damage the brain?
Avatar m tn The first 3 or so days were amazing, I felt motivated, awake, and alert, and most of all, it helped suppress my hunger, and I already felt like I was on the right path to losing weight, and eating smaller, healthier portions. No side effects! Then on the 4th day, about an hour and a half after my first short acting dose, I start to feel some chest pain, not exactly sure how to explain it because Ive never felt something like it before.
Avatar f tn Not easy is it for any Parent trying to do the best they can for their children,Put your question onto the Doctor Forum there is a site regarding ADD meds.
Avatar n tn s a different medication he can take. Maybe Ritalin is not right for him. Sometimes kids have side effects on one medication and have less or none on another. I personally hate the thought of medication. I think my son is ADHD. He is 9 now and I know I have to test him and put him on MEds. School is a big struggle for him. It's a difficult decidtion to medicate and it's also equally difficult not to medicate.
Avatar m tn d first take a look at when he gets angry and what is triggering it. For example, Ritalin does leave the system (depending on the dose) fairly quickly - hence, the question about when the anger happens. Margypops make a good point about the side effects. The fact that apparently you weren't aware of it suggests that you need more information about ADHD. I suggest you buy the book (its cheap through Amazon), "The ADD/ ADHD Answer book," by Susan Ashley.
Avatar f tn Secreted by the pineal gland, a small endocrine gland located in the brain, Melatonin controls the circadian rhythm, the body's internal clock that controls when a person falls asleep and wakes up. Since Melatonin is the master hormone that controls sleep patterns, many parents find that it will induce sleep in their ADHD children and help to alleviate the insomnia and sleep disturbances that go along with ADHD and ADHD treatment.
