Risperidone use in the elderly

Common Questions and Answers about Risperidone use in the elderly

risperdal

Avatar n tn My 90 year old Mother has been on Risperidone 0.5mg for 6 years. She started wandering at night so her Doctor increased it to 2.5 mg., 1mg in the morning and 1.5 at bedtime. With this amount she is totally drugged! and without it she is very confused, fearful, and hallucinates! She also has Heart Disease, I've decreased this medication to 1mg and she still feels drugged. I'm not sure what to do, please reply.
Avatar f tn In a large Canadian study, propoxyphene use was also associated with a 60% increased risk of hip fracture in the elderly, and the risk was further increased by concomitant use of psychotropic agents (sedatives, antidepressants, neuroleptics), presumably due to additive psychomotor impairment. Therefore, these drugs may constitute a dangerous combination in certain susceptible populations.
Avatar f tn I just looked into Risperdal. I did find the info on the I use all the link all the time for info. It just wasn't listed under the ADHD category. This one is for the side effects. http://www.pharmacydrugguide.com/Risperdal_Side_Effects and this one is for Coupons http://www.pharmacydrugguide.com/Risperdal_Coupons. Still need to google and find more information on this drug and it's uses. But thought i would share this part.
Avatar n tn This is something that you should ask your Doctor about ,here is a link may be helpful, there is much on line regarding this www.mayoclinic.com/health/drug.../DSECTION=side-effects my opinion is it could be side effects of stopping the med .
Avatar n tn The Department of Geriatrics at Johns Hopkins University conducted a dedicated seminar at Mount Sinai Hospital geriatrics department three years ago warning against inappropriate use of risperdal in the elderly.
Avatar n tn t know how much was administered or what other drugs he was given in the hospital. the hospital will not call me back either. HELP!!!
Avatar n tn Yes, Solian once again, which worked the same as risperidone in making the vomiting disappear, it was the lowest dosage possible and it made me able to function, get an 8-hour job and a job at home. I finally thought I can finally forget about the nausea and vomiting. After a little bit more than a month, I started feeling the urge to vomit once every two or three days and I decided with my doctor to raise the dosage to 200 mg.
Avatar f tn On a more personal note, after years on this forum, I do not like the use of Risperidone except in extreme cases. It has many side effects and there are other meds that can work as well. Do take a look at the many side effects of Risperidone. I do not know your daughters age, but it is not recommended below certain age levels. Hopefully this is a psychiatrist that prescribed this med. and not a general md? If you have any more questions please post.
Avatar m tn if you don't have side effects from tegretol, good. tegretol is one out of the three classical antimanic and MS the other 2 are lithium and depakote. it's still used especially in the commonwealth countries though less in the states due to its high interactivity with other drugs.
Avatar m tn Yet in spite of the increasing evidence of the dangers of these anti-psychotic drugs such as Risperdal, Thorazine, and Stelazine (as well as other derivatives like risperidone, quetiapine, and olanzapine), they racked up a staggering $14.5 billion in international sales in 2007. These are three of the top 10 best-selling drugs on the planet.
Avatar f tn it was smeared all over the walls, it was all over every fitment, the shower walls, the floors, the sink, the outside of the toilet, the ceiling, the floor outside the bathroom ( carpeted) all the bedroom door handles, all the toiletries in the bathroom and finally, he was covered in it up to his armpits. his initial reaction was that it had got that way trying to clean it up. The toilet bowl under the waterline was the only place that there wasn't any!
Avatar m tn No. That rate is too fast. I remember when I was tapered off various medications and I went faster than the limitations my psychiatrist approved and there was rebound psychosis and also I was of course transfering to another medicataion. All medication changes must be done at the exact rate a person's psychiatrist states and with their supervision.
603015 tn?1329862973 i've used risperidone 1mg from the moment i fell ill in 2002, i.e. for 7 consecutive years now, in fact as IL said it helped my OCD. only in 2006 that i thought i was ok and needed no drugs anymore so i stopped it and lived on anafranil (tricyclic AD) but it didn't take me more than 3 months to turn manic and dx bipolar. So whereas it's an atypical AP but it also possesses a stabilization property.
Avatar m tn stopping Risperidone (Risperdal) too quickly may be the reappearance of symptoms. i remember to have read somewhere that you need 3 weeks to taper off from risperidone but i don't recall the dose from which you start going down. so i presume 1 week is ok from 1mg till 0.5mg or better give it 2 weeks maximum.
Avatar f tn He offered help me to sweep the floor/yard. Hanging and picking up the clothes. He also concentrated on the weather make sure he picked up the clothes before it rained. He'll miss if he slept all the day long! LOL. He liked sleep (usually longer hour than us). He said to me, when getting old all the bones shrink, so can feel the body aching. He said exercise is important. Even he was on the bed, he also moving his toes and fingers a lot.
574118 tn?1305135284 I have long been questioning why am i taking so much seroquel (150mg) and only 1mg apexidone (egyptian brand for risperidone) which made me try to reduce the first by all means but in vain, until i discovered that my 1mg of the 2nd equals 100 of the 1st. So by taking 150mg seroquel i am in fact taking 1.5mg of risperidone only. I was trying hard to reduce my seroquel by 50mg meaning trying to reduce my apexidone by 0.5mg which is nonsense.
Avatar f tn Also Strattera can as an adverse side effect sometimes increase or cause aggression so although you should leave the dose of all medications in place it would be essential to discuss this with the doctor or psychiatrist who is prescribing the medications. You can find the information on the medication website, package instructions or P.D.R. (Physician's Desk Reference) Then they can appropriate adjust or change her medications as needed.
2216810 tn?1420856876 Xanax helped me calm down so I could get to a place where I could focus in therapy. The med helped a lot, but the therapy helped me more. Learning what my triggers are and how I can manage them on my end has been critical as part of a whole treatment plan for my anxiety. I'm glad you're feeling better! Stay in touch with your doctor about the xanax and your symptoms. Best wishes!
Avatar m tn 1- what were some of the side effects (keep in mind that I still don;t talk to my husband about any of this, everything is new and he sill in denial...so I learn through other people's experience) 2- You took it for 4 months for what? And how did your Pdoc decided that it was time to stop? I really appreciate if you can help.
Avatar m tn She also gets up at night and looks for things or wanders around. The consultant has prescribed risperidone, although we were hoping for Aricept. I am very concerned about this as internet research suggests it is for aggressive behaviour and will result in oversedation even drooling. I don't want my mum to be a zombie - I'd just like her to be more like her old self. Does anyone have any experience of this drug at all? I'm not going to give it to her until I learn more.
