Avatar n tn My son is 17 and was diagnosed with Tourettes and OCD at the age of 13. We had to wait 4 months of hell to be seen by a pyschiatrist and then had to wait about another 3 months to see some benefits from meds - clonidine and sulpiride. The tablets made him very tired and down and didnt go to school very often as he couldnt concentrate and fell asleep in class. He is very good at keeping in his vocal and motor tics when in public and with his friends but now he cannot do that.
Avatar f tn ) But back to the meds. Most Dr.s treat the OCD, ADHD, and Anxiety components of Tourettes more than the Tourettes itself. The less anxious, happier, and less obsessive and compulsive a child is, the less tics they will have thus increasing self esteem which then in turn reduces tics more. Not saying they will go away. I met a lot of people at the conference that have a very difficult time. Cognitive behavioral therapy is highly effective and Habit Reversal Therapy is also highly reccommended.
17218185 tn?1454677673 Please give me some advice about these 2 treatments for Tourettes. My 12 yr old son has Tourette's, was diagnosed when he was 5. At that time, he was having lots of verbal tics, strange behavior, slow language development, and obsessive scribbling on paper then waddling it up and throwing on floor (he started kindergarten, and I got impression he was stressed about learning to write), he did this for hours at a time!
Avatar f tn He did have a head injury but we were told all was OK. We now believe he is showing signs of Tourettes. There is no Tourettes in our family. Could he have developed Tourettes 7 years later from the head injury? And if so, does it change anything as far as treatment or expected outcome?
Avatar n tn Hi, I had Tourettes as a child. Almost always Tourettes develops between the childhood to teenage years. I was around 11 or 12 when I developed it. The good thing is most people outgrow the syndrome. I blinked my eyes with out control. I wasn't even aware of the fact that I was doing it and family and friends would have to point it out to me. I finally became aware of the blinking and would make efforts to not blink them..the desire to blink them was almost reisistable.
Avatar n tn Is there any connection between Parkinsons and Tourettes? I have Parkinsons and my grandson has Tourettes. Both can be treated with deep brain stimulation. They both involve dopamine. Has anyone studied the relationship?
Avatar m tn My question is on tapering risperidone how long does one need to taper risperidone from a dose of 1mg to 0.5mg in days or weeks?.
603015 tn?1329862973 i am afrraid this is not the risperidone, but it's called spastic colon (Irritable Bowel Syndrome). it just happened that they occurred by chance simultaneously. when you have anxiety you get spastic colon and especially with the change of weather, i.e. seasonal change from summer to fall say. I know it's devastating. They reckon it afflicts up to 20% of the world's population.
Avatar f tn Hi. I know often Tourettes exists in people alongside other conditions like OCD, ADHD etc so perhaps your daughter has also got a behavioural condition as well as Tourettes? It's definitely likely unless she is just feeling tense from coping with Tourettes but you said these behaviours were present before the Tourettes appeared. I think it would be a good idea to get this checked as well because if there is a condition there a diagnosis will be the most beneficial thing to help you.
Avatar n tn my son, 9 , was taking risperidone 1mg BID. he has missed his doses for 2 days and now came home from summercamp with signs of tardive dyskinesia. Is this because of stopping the risperidone or has the risperidone been masking the tardive dyskinesia ?
Avatar m tn I had tourettes as a kid. I had rapid eye blinking without being aware I was even doing it. My Tourettes was a mild case and went away after a year or so. After the kids at school so cruely made me aware of what I was doing, I made efforts to be aware of blinking my eyes. Even now, at57 yrs old, I sometimes stop and think, am I blinking my eyes.
Avatar m tn How do you manage withstand side effects of both Risperidone and Seroquel.I found even 1mg of Risperidone made me edgy, nervous and anxious. My hypomanic episode resolved in July and my Pdoc was a month late in tapering Risperidone. He started tapering process in September. In future I shall keep far away from these antipsychotics as possible.A most distasteful experience.
Avatar f tn Her neuro thinks hers is transient tic syndrome. I think they are tourettes. We are currently investigating these things. I also got her a therapist to help her deal with these things. I also try not to bring attention to her tics. It does look as if she does some of this on purpose but its not. Stressful situations will make hers worse. Does your son have a neurologist? Have you thought of taking him to one? I hope all goes well with you.
1985196 tn?1402190098 wow , that's some medication , over the last 10 years i've been on quiet a lot too but for the first 5 year's or so it was mainly anti-depressants and the odd anti psychotic , but they had no odea what they were treating back then, it's only been the last few years i got diagnosed properly ,but they are still not 100% sure about the Bi polar / with psychotic features or Schizoaffective , which is what they call it for now , i don't think there's a whole lot of difference
Avatar m tn I am really happy today.Yesterday I took my last dose of Risperidone which I had been taking since the past four months and which had been tapered off by my Pdoc .I never liked this med which had numerous side effects of which I experienced some, thankfully not the worst ones.I will now only have to take my mood stabilizer which I have been taking for a number of years.
Avatar m tn She also gets up at night and looks for things or wanders around. The consultant has prescribed risperidone, although we were hoping for Aricept. I am very concerned about this as internet research suggests it is for aggressive behaviour and will result in oversedation even drooling. I don't want my mum to be a zombie - I'd just like her to be more like her old self. Does anyone have any experience of this drug at all? I'm not going to give it to her until I learn more.
Avatar m tn I am in full blown withdrawal symptoms from stopping risperidone with anxiety and my psychiatrist is back 5 days later.I had to stop because of side effects at 1 mg.What should I do?
1649932 tn?1348082640 Hi ive been taking risperidone for 3 weeks now for social anxiety it seems to be working a little but in extreamly nervous now sence i been taking it is the medecine suppose to make me nervous im on 1 mg are u going through this please let me know.
1742269 tn?1315381633 Risperidone is generic for Risperidal and I think it's a pretty good option for depression & psychosis. Not so much for anxiety though. It should give you a boost or make you feel energized rather than lethargic due to the increased norepinephrine plasma levels. This does not make you gain weight either. See how it goes and maybe you will be able to eliminate your antidepressant or at least decrease it.
Avatar f tn I was recently told i may have tourettes due to vocal and motor tics. The tics include spasming of multiple areas of my body and occasionally making an indecipherable sound. I had these on occasion when I was a kid, but they have worsened over the past year. I also have body pain and lack of coordination that has been getting worse. I also was seen in the er for blurred vision not long ago and this is still a problem even with glasses. Anyone have any ideas?
282524 tn?1348489012 i have a 8 year old son that has adhd, odd, ocd and aspergers while now his ped is thinking that he may also have tourettes. he does have alot of tics and wierd outbursts but i thought it was b/c of all the other problems that he is having. my question is how do i find a right dr to evaluate him and what causes this, or is it that he was born with it? and what are the long term problems with this syndrome?
Avatar m tn Hi, i have had Tourettes Syndrome since i was six years old. I haven't really paid much attention too it because it was mild, and it would come and go. I have two half-sisters with TS also. I was just wondering, does TS get worse over time? My tics are pretty much just mild. Ex: soft humming, blinking eyes too much, squeezing muscles in throat (for some reason, things that people cant really notice that much).
Avatar n tn Hi there. Risperidone is an atypical antipsychotic drug with certain side effects. These are sedation, dysphoria, insomnia, sexual dysfunction, muscle stiffness, muscle pain, constipation, photosensitivity and alopecia. The fall could also lead to local tissue spasm and tightness in the surrounding muscles. She needs to be seen by an orthopaedician to rule out this as an effect of injury ad also check for an missed fractures.
1460021 tn?1445735958 My father has Tourettes...and has been a heavy drug user most of his life (Not in recent years now though)...he's told me he's done the hard stuff like heroin, acid (while constructing high story buildings!) and so on. He was a constant marijuana smoker, and i do believe he was smoking it when i was conceived. He also beat my mother while pregnant with me. Does anyone know or think this would of had an effect on my development?
Avatar f tn My daughter just started taking risperidone 2 days ago and is experiencing the trouble swallowing side effect and not opening her mouth very wide when she talks and having trouble speaking. Is this normal? Will it wear off? Its really scaring me.
Avatar n tn I was diagnosed with febrile seizures when i was about one week old too. I developed tourettes when i was 4 years old and i am now 29. Im actually starting to think that, it is this medication phenobarbital which caused my tourettes from the beginning. None of my patent or grand parentes has tics or tourettes. Im looking into it and i have found ar least two studies that strenghtens my cause.
Avatar m tn I am in full blown withdrawal from risperidone and my psychiatrist is out of town.I got side effects(involuntary movements) so had to quit.My doc will be back 4 days from now.Any suggestions.
