Hi, My son has TS & has had very good results with Haldol with slight negative effects. When U say that ".... on the internet. All of them have awful side effects." Each patient reacts differently & won't have ALL those side effects or any. The percentages for each side effect are listed. Neurologists usually treat TS instead of Psychs. Also, Xenazine is for adults & was used in Canada & Europe before it was approved in the US about 2+ yrs ago.

Since then we found out that Risperidone is know for side effects such as tardive dyskinesia. We are seriously concerned now. Will this be permanent ? What is the best way to examine this problem ? Thanks for any suggestions !

I must disagree with the other poster. Risperdal was approved by the FDA for use in children on the spectrum in 2006 to treat *repeated* bouts of aggression and irritability as are other anti-psychotics. My son was diagnosed with Asperger's when he was 3 and has been taking Risperidone (Risperdal) for 4 years in varying dosages. Without it he could not have attended mainstream schooling as his aggressive outbursts were a danger to himself, other children and adults.

It has many side effects and there are other meds that can work as well. Do take a look at the many side effects of Risperidone. I do not know your daughters age, but it is not recommended below certain age levels. Hopefully this is a psychiatrist that prescribed this med. and not a general md? My Doctor just switch my medication from 150 mg of Effexor XR to 400 mg of Seroquel XR. I dropped my dosage of Effexor gradually but I still experienced terrible withdrawl. Now I am experiencing bad side effects, " I'm guessing ths", from the Seroquel. I have gained weight in my stomach area very rapidly, I have pain and stiffness in my legs, 24 hour dry mouth and sinuses and I feel like I could cry at the drop of a hat.

How do you manage withstand side effects of both Risperidone and Seroquel.I found even 1mg of Risperidone made me edgy,nervous and anxious.My hypomanic episode resolved in July and my Pdoc was a month late in tapering Risperidone.He started tapering process in September.In future I shall keep far away from these antipsychotics as possible.A most distasteful experience.

I am in full blown withdrawal symptoms from stopping risperidone with anxiety and my psychiatrist is back 5 days later.I had to stop because of side effects at 1 mg.What should I do?

I just wanted you to know that after starting this Risperidone I have lost interest in everything I use to like in life like reading,music and movies and become withdrawn.That is what I dont like as this Risperdal has almost finished off my interests in things I liked.I had a similar experience in 1997 when I was started on chlorpromazine by another Pdoc and it had then similarly led me to lose interest in everything I liked like reading music and movies.

Also, this medication is recommended to be initially dosed at 1mg bid (TWICE A DAY) with incremental increases of 1mg bid on days 2 and 3 to a dose of 3 mg bid on day 3. They put her on Lithium and then added abilify a week later. The abilify gave her horrible side effects and I never want to see my daughter in that condition again! I detest the drug Abilify. Abilify can be activating. That is one side effect some people experience. It is less likely statistically than Risperdal to cause this effect but all (currently available) antipsychotics have this potential. See if it improves and if not speak to your doctor about what to do at that point. It would take some time for that effect to pass if you changed medications.

Hi adel just wanted you to know that I feel much better On 0.5mg of risperidone and cant wait to stop this medicine in about 3 days.

Stopping any medication should be done at the psychiatrist's exact titration schedule. I learned the hard way from discontinuing medications too fast before my current recovery. And also you would have the return of symptoms it is treating. If you can't tolerate the side effects or feel it is not workable best to speak to your psychiatriat about other available options and if you would like to try discontinuing it ask for a titration schedule from them on how to do it.

The Sizodon is Risperidone used for mood disorders and the clonil is for OCD. Did you google the side effects of each drug? Did the doc say why he/she was putting you on Sizodon and clonil together?

Hiya. I've been taking lithium for about five years and I didn't really get any side effects from it after the first few weeks. In the beginning I felt very sick and had a mild headache but it settled down. I take lamictal as well and had zero side effects from that, no major ones on risperidone when I took that. I couldn't tolerate quetiapine at all, olanzapine causes me a few problems. I've tried a lot of different meds over the years like you. I guess what I'm saying is.
