I was thinking of prolactin, rather than estrogen. Here is from another website: Prolactin is a hormone released by the pituitary gland that stimulates breast development and milk production in women.

Antipsychotics can cause reduced testosterone levels and increased prolactin levels. Increased prolactin levels causing hyperprolactinemia can reduce the testicular size . Prolactin levels normally fall within days of stopping oral medication, but may take months to return to normal after stopping long acting depot medication. Risperidone and Amisulpride are main offenders and Clozapine and Quetiapine generally do not raise Prolactin levels.

I must disagree with the other poster. Risperdal was approved by the FDA for use in children on the spectrum in 2006 to treat *repeated* bouts of aggression and irritability as are other anti-psychotics. My son was diagnosed with Asperger's when he was 3 and has been taking Risperidone (Risperdal) for 4 years in varying dosages. Without it he could not have attended mainstream schooling as his aggressive outbursts were a danger to himself, other children and adults.

Several days ago I started having pelvic pain on the left of my lower abdomen. I have no idea if this pain is related to elevated prolactin from risperidone, so I reduced risperidone to 1 mg per day, not sure what the effect of this is going to be (I have not had psychotic episodes recently so I hope that this is going to be OK). I have also been vegan for 8 years, and two weeks ago I started eating dairy and fish, so I might have pelvic pain from that.

hello doc, im 28yrs female,i was diagnosed with paranoid psychosis 3yrs ago and has been on medication RISPERIDONE 2mg and AMISULPRIDE50mg since then.i have amenorrhea and high prolactin levels im taking treatment with Cabergoline0.5mg,now im getting my menstrual cycle but diagnosed with PCOD so im on METFORMIN 850mg.how long shd i take these antipsychotics,im planning to get pregnant.i heard tht Risperidone is not save during pregnancy plz advise me? MY 10 yr old son has ADHD/ANXIETY/PHOBIA/ AND ALSO A MOOD DISORDER which he is still being evaluated at school perhaps it might be BI-POLAR. He is currently being given RISPERIDONE 1.0 3X /mgCONCERTA 36MG 1X / RITILIN 10MG 2X /AND SEROQUEL 50Mg AT NIGHT. He gets his blood and ekg done regularly.

i am an 18 year old female prescribed wellbutrin 300 mg, lexapro 30 mg, vyvanse 30 mg, risperidone .25 mg and formula 303 muscle relaxants. i've been on these medications for quite some time and i don't think they have anything to do with my symptoms, but i just wanted to give a short background. over the past couple of weeks, i've been experiencing very odd sensations.

And even sedated I started having more and more warning signs that my mania was returning. About a week ago, I started taking Risperidone after a two week break to clear out the thiothixene. During that two week cleansing, I was getting more and more manic, but still manageable. Now after a week of Risperidone, I'm completely wide open and out of control. My question is, has anyone found that Risperidone has exacerbated mania?

That most probably is prolactin elevation which can cause female hormones to increase in males so that there is sexual dysfunction and pain in the nipple area. Having discharge from the nipples can occur too. I did experience that when I was on standard antipsychotics and its a common side effect. It depends on its severity. Having breast milk is rare but that can happen. It should go away in time. However keep your doctor informed and they will follow up.

I was treated with both cabergoline and pergolide for about 1 month each b/c my prolactin was elevated, (I was also on medications at the time which increase prolaction, so the source of the excess prolation was never known for sure) both of which I had dangerous side effects from and had to stop taking. How can a pit tumor grow from nothing to 8mm in 4 years and then just stop?

My question is on tapering risperidone how long does one need to taper risperidone from a dose of 1mg to 0.5mg in days or weeks?.

i am afrraid this is not the risperidone, but it's called spastic colon (Irritable Bowel Syndrome). it just happened that they occurred by chance simultaneously. when you have anxiety you get spastic colon and especially with the change of weather, i.e. seasonal change from summer to fall say. I know it's devastating. They reckon it afflicts up to 20% of the world's population.

my son, 9 , was taking risperidone 1mg BID. he has missed his doses for 2 days and now came home from summercamp with signs of tardive dyskinesia. Is this because of stopping the risperidone or has the risperidone been masking the tardive dyskinesia ?

How do you manage withstand side effects of both Risperidone and Seroquel.I found even 1mg of Risperidone made me edgy,nervous and anxious.My hypomanic episode resolved in July and my Pdoc was a month late in tapering Risperidone.He started tapering process in September.In future I shall keep far away from these antipsychotics as possible.A most distasteful experience.

I took risperidone (risperdal) off and on for many years. It helped calm down my irritation, anger and psychotic symptoms--hallucinations and delusions. I started on a small dose 1 mg then 2mg. I climbed to 6 mg until my prolactin level went way past 1000, and my gynecologist went up in arms about it because it completely stopped my menstruation. It got lowered to 4 mg.

wow , that's some medication , over the last 10 years i've been on quiet a lot too but for the first 5 year's or so it was mainly anti-depressants and the odd anti psychotic , but they had no odea what they were treating back then, it's only been the last few years i got diagnosed properly ,but they are still not 100% sure about the Bi polar / with psychotic features or Schizoaffective , which is what they call it for now , i don't think there's a whole lot of difference

I am really happy today.Yesterday I took my last dose of Risperidone which I had been taking since the past four months and which had been tapered off by my Pdoc .I never liked this med which had numerous side effects of which I experienced some,thankfully not the worst ones.I will now only have to take my mood stabilizer which I have been taking for a number of years.

She also gets up at night and looks for things or wanders around. The consultant has prescribed risperidone, although we were hoping for Aricept. I am very concerned about this as internet research suggests it is for aggressive behaviour and will result in oversedation even drooling. I don't want my mum to be a zombie - I'd just like her to be more like her old self. Does anyone have any experience of this drug at all? I'm not going to give it to her until I learn more.

Hi ive been taking risperidone for 3 weeks now for social anxiety it seems to be working a little but in extreamly nervous now sence i been taking it is the medecine suppose to make me nervous im on 1 mg are u going through this please let me know.

Risperidone is generic for Risperidal and I think it's a pretty good option for depression & psychosis. Not so much for anxiety though. It should give you a boost or make you feel energized rather than lethargic due to the increased norepinephrine plasma levels. This does not make you gain weight either. See how it goes and maybe you will be able to eliminate your antidepressant or at least decrease it.

Hi there. Risperidone is an atypical antipsychotic drug with certain side effects. These are sedation, dysphoria, insomnia, sexual dysfunction, muscle stiffness, muscle pain, constipation, photosensitivity and alopecia. The fall could also lead to local tissue spasm and tightness in the surrounding muscles. She needs to be seen by an orthopaedician to rule out this as an effect of injury ad also check for an missed fractures.

My daughter just started taking risperidone 2 days ago and is experiencing the trouble swallowing side effect and not opening her mouth very wide when she talks and having trouble speaking. Is this normal? Will it wear off? Its really scaring me.

I am in full blown withdrawal from risperidone and my psychiatrist is out of town.I got side effects(involuntary movements) so had to quit.My doc will be back 4 days from now.Any suggestions.

My Pdoc had suggested an extremely slow tapering of risperidone over 10-12 weeks but I tapered it over 6 weeks and only had minimal withdrawl symptoms.I am yet to go and see him.I am stable on tegretol 1000 mg with no side effects.Hope it stays good.

My four year old grandchild/fosterchild has been to the doctor and now take meds for ADHD. Frist was riddelen that did not work at all. New medication is Risperidone. No change has been noticed. This child before meds was pooping and peeing on her bedroom floor and even after meds. Im at my end and dont understand this kind of behavior.
