Risperidone for autistic children

Common Questions and Answers about Risperidone for autistic children

risperdal

Avatar f tn First, I can find no indication that risperdal is indicated for ADHD. " In 2006, the FDA approved risperidone for the treatment of irritability in children and adolescents with autism.[6] The FDA's decision was based in part on a study of autistic people with severe and enduring problems of violent meltdowns, aggression, and self-injury; risperidone is not recommended for autistic people with mild aggression and explosive behavior without an enduring pattern.
Avatar f tn She has been on risperidone for many years. Recently we have tried other drugs and her symptoms of aggression have increased. She is currently on Strattera, serequel, and hydroxizine (to help her sleep). She has only been on the serequel 2 days and it is not helping. The risperidone was stopped immediately because of weight gain. I need some suggestions on what we can do. HELP!
Avatar f tn Just curious - who diagnosed Risperidone? And why? I was under the impression that Risperidonel was not be used for children under the age of 11 (although I have heard of it being used to treat severely autistic children and also schizophrenia, bi-polar and other related psychotic disorders). I suppose whether your child will be on this medication for the rest of her life will depend upon her diagnosis - whether the mental health issue is a life-long problem or just a short-term one.
Avatar n tn After they said he is autistic and they recomemded risperidone for 2 months , and to send n him in a special school for at least 6 months , All i want to know is whether his treatment is going in a right direction , is this medicine is going to help him in speech , or sholud we take him to a speech thearpist . My son has low level of speech , Is less social , has no repeated behaviour . His BERA test showed mild to moderate hearing loss in both ears .
1415407 tn?1389254933 Does anyone know of an online support group for autistic parents of autistic children? I see a lot about parents of autistic children but not much for autistic parents. It is quite.a bit harder trying to raise children with disabilities when you have a disability yourself. I'd love to read what other people have to say on this subject.
Avatar n tn they offer services with pple like psychologists who can help u and ur family how to deal with autistic children.. My child had several evaluations and still couldn't pinpoint his problem until yesterday when he had his appointment for psychological evaluation.... It hurt me soo much to find out he is autistic and even though I kinda knew... I was in plain denial... Heatherm4 mentioned about diet and medication... I agree... plz look into it because thats what I'm going to do...
Avatar m tn Hi, it is my understanding that the class of drugs that zoloft is part of----- the seratonin reuptake inhibitors will affect the sertonin levels of the brain (increases it) so that a person can properly function. It works to relieve anxiety and social anxiety. It has a start up period of 2 to 4 weeks in which a person can have different types of side effects. They can become agitated for one. Some go the other way and get sleepy.
Avatar f tn t prevent most bodily functions from occurring- for instance, unless there is an additional physical issue, an autistic child can urinate just fine. Although they possibly may not be potty trained due to the impulse control signals from the brain that are required for potty training- their bodies would still get rid of waste just like anyone else though.
Avatar f tn She was on risperidone for many years but stopped abruptly for weight gain?? Hm. Well if that class of antipsychotic medication worked to control her symptoms, there are others in the class. I'd try that. And weight gain---- well, in the area of managing a difficult patient's symptoms, most physicians look at benefits verses cons. If the benefits are greater often a medication is continued even if it has an unwanted side effect.
Avatar n tn I must disagree with the other poster. Risperdal was approved by the FDA for use in children on the spectrum in 2006 to treat *repeated* bouts of aggression and irritability as are other anti-psychotics. My son was diagnosed with Asperger's when he was 3 and has been taking Risperidone (Risperdal) for 4 years in varying dosages. Without it he could not have attended mainstream schooling as his aggressive outbursts were a danger to himself, other children and adults.
Avatar f tn Thanks for the comment. My son tested negative for Fragile X. His behaviors have resulted in a firm diagnosis of Severe Autism by all of his eight specialists. The genetic testing was to possibly find out why he has Autism and to provide data for research purposes. His father and I have also given blood for these tests but have not been given our results. I find the whole thing very interesting. I do believe that Autism is a genetic disorder.
Avatar n tn They will not respond to reason but they will respond when they know that they will be rewarded for treating you well and for doing the chores, work, learning lessons that you want them to do. It is not ok for autistic children to be rude to their parents and caregivers.
Avatar f tn he is 28 months and he has languagedelay development, after i saw a doctor he said that he has ADHD he saw him for 3, he recommended to us the speech therapy daily, after we started the speech therapy , he said that he should start to be under medication (Risperdal) my question is : is it that common to put a child that young under medication, or to diagnose him as ADHD , i am living in medial east.
Avatar f tn My husband's brother is autistic (his parents had 3 children, the oldest is autistic and the younger two have had no medical problems). My husband and I are thinking about having children soon and were wondering - does my brother-in-law's autism mean that we are at a greater risk of having an autistic child? There are no other autistic family member or extended family members that we know of.
Avatar n tn For what it's worth, I know about a hundred (maybe more) famlies with children on the autistic spectrum and I only know of one family with autistic twins. I have two children myself: the older one is diagnosed with PDD-NOS and the other has a diagnosis of "teenage NOS!" What you can do is to join a support group. I couldn't have done it alone without the helpand support of others in my autistic community.
Avatar f tn My 12 yr old autistic daughter has reached the level in kickboxing to spar. Her main autistic deficit is comprehension and I'm cautious to have her spar for fear of behavior issues. Have any studies been done on our children to determine if engaging in physical activity such as sparring could trigger behavior issues? She is mild mannered for the most part but when she gets frustrated or too much is coming at her at once, her anxiety level goes from 0 to 100 in a matter of seconds.
Avatar f tn Studies are showing out of 10,000 women that were induced over the last few years 99% of them had autistic children. What do yall think about that?
6583170 tn?1385317938 I heard this a few months ago also, but a lady I know who has an autistic child said that there is no way the vaccine can give a child autism. She said that both parents must be carriers of the gene for it to be possible for a child to be autistic. I don't know much about it personally, but I'm sure she does as she has been to many specialists with her son and she is very involved in his therapies.
Avatar m tn The inverse association found for folic acid use in early pregnancy and subsequent risk for autistic disorder was not found for folic use during midpregnancy. Although no association was found between prenatal folic acid supplementation and Asperger syndrome or PDD-NOS, "power was limited," note the investigators. In addition, further analysis showed no association between risk for an ASD and use of fish oil supplements.

Avatar n tn As a doctor who works extensively with autistic children, I can tell you they are not going to alert you when they are ready to be trained... children with autism do not see anything outside their own comfort zone. If it does not bother them to be wet or soiled, they will not try to change it. It is important to help the child gain a connection between the need to go to the bathroom and the act of going to the bathroom... this is done using a system of PECS (picture exchange system) cards...
