Risperdal withdrawal symptoms in children

Common Questions and Answers about Risperdal withdrawal symptoms in children

risperdal

Avatar f tn When I was transferred from Seroquel to Risperdal (at the titration rate my psychiatrist instructed me to follow) it took me several weeks of what I was told were "flu like withdrawal symptoms" (not unsafe but just uncomfortable) for them to subside. This has happened with other medications as well.
Avatar m tn Does stopping Risperidone give rise to a withdrawal reaction?.If so what are the symptoms?.
Avatar n tn Is your doctor aware of this side effect you are associating with discontinuing the Risperdal? All medications such as this can have withdrawal issues. Cold turkey going without Risperdal would be very rare for a doctor to recommend. Are you sure this was what your doctor wanted you to do? Again, this is not a normal recommendation and especially for a 4 mg dose. You need to see your doctor again. Now, it's been 2 months. Not sure if any withdrawal symptoms would still be going on.
Avatar n tn Hi, I had been on Risperdal for about 15 months and I recently stopped taking Risperdal. First of all, my periods which had stopped shortly after starting Risperdal returned and my breasts which were producing milk dried up but now I suffer from insomnia. I sometimes get only 1 1/2 hours of sleep a night. Will this go away on its own?
Avatar m tn What I am surprised is that I am still having withdrawal symptoms in spite of having Risperdal tapered slowly by my Psychiatrist. When did you stop your Risperdal?
Avatar n tn The hallmark trait for PANDAS is sudden acute and debilitating onset of intense anxiety and mood lability accompanied by Obsessive Compulsive-like issues and/or Tics in association with a streptococcal-A (GABHS) infection that has occurred immediately prior to the symptoms. In some instances, the onset will be 4 to 6 months after a strep infection because the antibiotics did not fully eradicate the bacteria.

7087196 tn?1389306119 I was diagnosed with Bi-Polar in 2005 and also had a child in 2005. My son is now 8 years old and acts like I did around his age. He says and acts in violent ways. He has not done anything to extreme thankfully.
Avatar f tn Hi Adel I did not have anxiety before starting Risperdal only had a manic episode without anxiety and now on tapering risperdal I am having withdrawal symptoms I am convinced.Anyways I too am keen to stop it and have 5 days to go for that.Hope the anxiety subsides.
Avatar n tn First, is the breakup the source of your problems, meaning you didn't have them until the breakup? Because if that's the case, you don't have a chronic problem and probably shouldn't be on any medication but should have been directed to a good psychologist to get a handle on things at most. The grief and mental anguish over a breakup happens to everyone at some point or another, but it's not a sign of mental illness -- it's working through grief and moving on.
Avatar n tn Went to my dr. today and he changed my meds. Took me off Zxprexa 20 mg and put me on Geodon 80 mg . I''m hopeful that I want have any any withdrawal symptoms. If there are any symptoms what should I be on the look out for?
Avatar n tn Any psychiatropic medications such as Risperdal should be tapered and weaned off slowly and I would never undergo this without a directive from your doctor. Symptoms of withdrawel from risperdal can be uncomfortable--- insomnia, hallucinations, irritability, etc. The key is to wean slowly to either make these symptoms less or to not experience them at all. Cold turkey is not the way to go.
Avatar m tn I am in full blown withdrawal from risperidone and my psychiatrist is out of town.I got side effects(involuntary movements) so had to quit.My doc will be back 4 days from now.Any suggestions.
574118 tn?1305135284 t happen with all drugs. Dependence means that you get withdrawal symptoms if you suddenly stop--you can become dependent on nasal allergy sprays if you use them too many days in a row, getting rebound congestion because of the drug withdrawal. Many drugs taken on a regular basis create a certain amount of dependence, but a reasonable taper is enough to deal with it in the vast majority of cases.
Avatar f tn I was recently taking off Risperdal I tapered like every other day for 3 days,is this enough taper would i have withdrawal,i know in the past they have just stopped me off it,,is it a drug that needs taperred,,i was on 1/2 mg since sept 13 08
Avatar f tn When I stopped medication (years ago before my current recovery) I became psychotic so that's never a good idea. When I was transferred from Seroquel to Risperdal with my psychiatrist's exact titration schedule (the only way it should be done) I got some typical flu like withdrawal symptoms for a few days and then it passed over. If your psychiatrist has authorized you to change medications, ask them exactly how it should be done and what to expect.
Avatar f tn The atypical antipsychotics can often cause weight gain in both children and adults. Abilify, (aripiprazole) is less likely to cause weight gain or metabolic problems." (from - http://www.baltimorepsych.com/NonStimulants.htm). Point being is that if all he is taking now is risperdal and he is not getting a help either med wise or behavioral therapy for his ADHD - then his ADHD is probably making both his and your life pretty miserable.
Avatar f tn Oh yeah I thought I should also add I got really out of control during cold turkey withdrawal behaviorally from Geodon and my voices in my head from before started telling me I should be dead which they never told me things like that before ever among other psychotic things but this of course is really hard on the brain and it didn't happen again when I tapered off proper.
Avatar n tn I must disagree with the other poster. Risperdal was approved by the FDA for use in children on the spectrum in 2006 to treat *repeated* bouts of aggression and irritability as are other anti-psychotics. My son was diagnosed with Asperger's when he was 3 and has been taking Risperidone (Risperdal) for 4 years in varying dosages. Without it he could not have attended mainstream schooling as his aggressive outbursts were a danger to himself, other children and adults.
Avatar n tn Stopping Risperidone cold turkey can provoke an awful withdrawal syndrome or return of original symptoms so wait till you see his new doc.I went through similar problems when I stopped Risdone suddenly. My Psychiatrist restarted me on low dose risdone of 1 mg and is tapering me off in 4 weeks.my side effects have abated and I am 16 days away from stopping Risperidone.
Avatar f tn All the while wondering if the gabapentin (also being an anti-seizure drug) was stabilzing my moods.. Well I had about 7 days of withdrawal symptoms of risperdal. 4 days of sleeping all the time, and in awake times I'd be anxious, and then 3 days of being anxious as I have generalized anxiety disorder as well. But that went away after about 7 days. So far I've not had any issue with my mood being off. I am rock solid and it's been over a month since I quit Risperdal.
Avatar f tn I am concerned because he is not even three yet and it has not been approved for use (by the FDA) in children under five. He was only prescribed .25 mg, but I am jut not sure if it is normal to start meds this early? Also, if anyone has a child on it how long did it take before you noticed a difference in behaviors?
Avatar n tn m having strange neurological symptoms (numbness in extremities, a weird gait when I walk, pain shooting up and down my spine and into my head and horrid ringing in the head and ears). What kind of doctor should I see, and how do convince them that I am not "just a head case." I have attempted suicide once because of these miserable symptoms.
Avatar n tn If someone goes off medication so rapidly then withdrawal symptoms will definitely occur. However, even when I was titrated off Seroquel to Risperdal at the exact rate my psychiatrist stated I had flu like withdrawal symptoms that passed after a while but I did feel sick and have to rest up.
Avatar f tn Changing from one medication to another often creates withdrawal symptoms. When I changed from Seroquel which I had been on for 5 years to Risperdal I did have flu like symptoms but they passed within a few days. You are doing the right thing to speak to your psychiatrist but if its that it should go away soon. Its just a transitional process.
Avatar f tn Zoloft is one of the SSRI medications used for the treatment of anxiety. A few of the children in our group have used this medication and did well on it. The Risperdal is an anti-psychotic drug and is not used in anxiety issues (so I assume this is for the Bi-polar aspect of this illness) and so I am not overly familar with that medication.
Avatar n tn I wonder about the Risperdal - I believe it is not approved for children under 10 in the U.S. (unless, you are living in another country, then it could be approved there, but I doubt it). ODD is a very serious diagnosis and could be a preceder to bi-polar or other mood/personality disorders (is there a history of severe mental health issues on either side of the family?).
