Hi, I had been on Risperdal for about 15 months and I recently stopped taking Risperdal. First of all, my periods which had stopped shortly after starting Risperdal returned and my breasts which were producing milk dried up but now I suffer from insomnia. I sometimes get only 1 1/2 hours of sleep a night. Will this go away on its own?
Is your doctor aware of this side effect you are associating with discontinuing the Risperdal? All medications such as this can have withdrawal issues. Cold turkey going without Risperdal would be very rare for a doctor to recommend. Are you sure this was what your doctor wanted you to do? Again, this is not a normal recommendation and especially for a 4 mg dose. You need to see your doctor again. Now, it's been 2 months. Not sure if any withdrawal symptoms would still be going on.
It is just that I was a bit edgy and wanted to know whether withdrawing from risperdal has a withdrawal reaction so I asked a number of people when I did not get a reply yesterday as someone told me that all these meds have lousy withdrawal symptoms so I was scared.Now my doubts have been cleared.Thankfully the med and it's effects will be out of my system in a few days or weeks.

I was recently taking off Risperdal I tapered like every other day for 3 days,is this enough taper would i have withdrawal,i know in the past they have just stopped me off it,,is it a drug that needs taperred,,i was on 1/2 mg since sept 13 08
Tapering a dose is almost always neccesary. Its just you were on the minimum dose of Risperdal at a highly sublinical level so they may have thought it safe to stop it as its hard to divide that small a pill into two. However, in discontinuing it the symptoms may have returned. Let us know how you are doing now.
5mg and a GP asked me to stop it a he told me this could be TD.How long will these withdrawal symptoms last?.No other drugs but Psychiatrist was planning on starting Lamictal or tegretol after stopping risperdal.I have been on risperdal since august 3rd 2009.Any answers?.
When I was changed from Seroquel to Risperdal I had some standard flu like withdrawal symptoms. Basically I felt run down and lousy and had some aches and pains and had to sleep a lot for a couple of days but it was nothing dangerous and it went away. Don't know if that was specific to that antipsychotic change over or would happen with others. Ask your psychiatrist for more specific information.
Please remain at the dose he is taking for next 2 weeks and see his Psychiatrist and she will taper it down or replace it with a medication called Clozaril if it is Tardive.Most likely it could be a temporary movement disorder called Akithisia which will go away once Risdone is stopped.Stopping Risperidone cold turkey can provoke an awful withdrawal syndrome or return of original symptoms so wait till you see his new doc.I went through similar problems when I stopped Risdone suddenly.
s exact titration schedule (the only way it should be done) I got some typical flu like withdrawal symptoms for a few days and then it passed over. If your psychiatrist has authorized you to change medications, ask them exactly how it should be done and what to expect.
If someone goes off medication so rapidly then withdrawal symptoms will definitely occur. However, even when I was titrated off Seroquel to Risperdal at the exact rate my psychiatrist stated I had flu like withdrawal symptoms that passed after a while but I did feel sick and have to rest up.
I have been taking the xanax since May- and origionally was on a dose anywhere between .75 a day to maximum 1.5 a day- now I need the 2 mg a day to barely scratch the surface. The akathisia is so unbearable at times it brings me to tears- then the xanax helps a little but it all comes back full force. I don't know how much the interdosing withdrawal is causing more symptoms of restlessness and am wondering if Klonipin would be a better choice.
I have taken Prozac 10-40 mg over a period of 20 years. I have seen my internal med physician, my psychiatrist, and a neurogist about chronic headaches, chronic tinnitus, and chronic body pain. Depression runs deep in my family history including myself, but with medication and cognitive therapy I lead a relatively stable (but miserable life). The constant physical symptoms have ruined my quality of life. I feel terrible every day, but no one can or will try to diagnose my symptoms.
it is too dangerous too stop pills like this you must taper off with the supervision of a medical doctor cuz it can damage you. Risperdal is heavy duty meds I took it for three years I wont take it anymore I have TD and cant take it. and no your meds do not re dose themselves it actually goes to your stomach then thru your blood to the lungs and then to brain messages. it also tells the stomach to send to lungs I mean.
Risperdal is an antipsychotic though but I think some of them can send a person into mania. I remember reading Geodon could at least when read up on it.

I think my sleep problems are related to Risperdal and Xanax withdrawal reactions.My sleep problems began in October first week when my Psychiatrist start tapering me off Risperidone from September and it has gradually worsened as the dose was further reduced.Now I am off the Risperdal and mood wise I am OK.On my request my Psychiatrist has further slowed the tapering of Xanax.I am meeting him on 26th and will ask him for a sleeping aid like Ambien.
t tolerate Risperdal and need an antipsychotic you could ask your psychiatrist about changing to a different one. Even though they all basically work in the same manner they are different enough that one might easily be tolerable for you than another. And some are more effective as mood stabilizers but you could ask your psychiatrists which ones.
May I ask why he is on risperdal? Not trying to pry but a heavy medication like that, if used over a long period of time, can have pretty serious side effects on children.
You're not doing anything wrong and I can only imagine how hard this must be on both him and you. I'd consider a second opinion if this neurologist can't figure it out.
