Risperdal vs abilify

Common Questions and Answers about Risperdal vs abilify

risperdal

I have tried Lexapro, Zoloft, Abilify, Risperdal (which I was allergic too) and a whole sleu of other anti-depressants. I finally ended up on Effexor XR. In the beginning it seemed that all is well. After almost 3 years fo taking Effexor Xr I've been getting nothing but worsening sypmtoms. Anxiety, DEPRESSION 10 fold. My social life if gone, due to my fear of people. I had a Dr. appt. yesterday and asked to be switched backto Zoloft.
I gained 6lbs in 5 days when I increased my dose of risperdal. My psych put me on a med called Metfomin. It's technically for pre-diabetes, but it works by changing how your body uses and stores calories. It might be worth asking you p doc about it or a similar medication. It might mean that you'd be able to stay on your current medications, and stop gaining, and maybe start losing some of the weight.
My brother (46 years old, dx at age 17) has been on 20mg/day of Zyprexa for approx 1 month (we switched him from haldol injections). He is schizophrenic, lives with me, & is a heavy smoker (approx 3-4 packs/day with no current interest in stopping although he did kick the caffeine habit). I've been reading up on zyprexa & smoking and noted that zyprexa clearance is 40% higher in smokers vs. non smokers.
out of sheer desperation...Risperdal. I can't believe I'm saying this, but Risperdal changed our lives. My son is so much less impulsive, has far fewer meltdowns and overall is a much happier child. I realize this doesn't work for everyone, but my point is not to give up on meds. Try to weigh the benefit vs. the risk. Yes, the risks are frightening, but so is a childhood filled with unhappiness and stress and depression for others in the family.
I am currently on Abilify 10mg once daily and risperdal 1/2mg daily. I have read that both lithium and depakote can cause weight gain. So where does that leave me? Happiness and being overweight simply do not and cannot coexist in my world. It is just one more thing to be down and depressed and hopeless about. For some reason the weight keeps piling on at about 4lbs a week and seems that there is no end in sight. I could have been skinny and miserable, but now I am overweight and miserable.
She is medicated with tenex to help the raging adhd issues. Buspar for extreme anxiety. A low dose of abilify (2.5 mg) for the extreme rages. I was scared to give her one med. Now, somehow we are on three. They do help though and we hope to get rid of the abilify and maybe the buspar at some point. She still throws many tantrums a day usually. She has been seeing a therapist for a year and a half.
I know what you're thinking and the fear you have, but put it to rest, and just try something. As far as Risperdal, I think I might wait on that one until you try the AD for a few weeks first. I know some people who have had some bad side effects from that stuff. It might not to it to you but could. There's my two cents........well, maybe more like fifty cents!!!! : ) Love ya!
