Risperdal use in children

Common Questions and Answers about Risperdal use in children

risperdal

Avatar n tn My 9 yr old grandson has a seizure disorder that may be linked to autism. He is on Depakot & Risperdal. The main problem is his inability to realize when he needs to use the toilet, resulting in having bowel movements. He can sit forever until someone notices the odor. It doesn't bother him & his doctors don't seem too concerned. Could the medication w or w/o the disorders have anything to do w/this problem. Or, is it some other reason?
Avatar n tn t even FDA approved to use for children and trust me there is a reason for that. We are seeing it first hand weaning my son who was just diagnosed with PANDAS off it. I am speaking from experience and again if you suspect your child has PANDAS good chance is they may not have any of the diagnosis that the doctor is using the meds to treat. Pandas children should be treated with antibiotics and Aleve. I have one of the best PANDAS doctors out there.
Avatar f tn I am concerned because he is not even three yet and it has not been approved for use (by the FDA) in children under five. He was only prescribed .25 mg, but I am jut not sure if it is normal to start meds this early? Also, if anyone has a child on it how long did it take before you noticed a difference in behaviors?
Avatar n tn I must disagree with the other poster. Risperdal was approved by the FDA for use in children on the spectrum in 2006 to treat *repeated* bouts of aggression and irritability as are other anti-psychotics. My son was diagnosed with Asperger's when he was 3 and has been taking Risperidone (Risperdal) for 4 years in varying dosages. Without it he could not have attended mainstream schooling as his aggressive outbursts were a danger to himself, other children and adults.
Avatar n tn The Department of Geriatrics at Johns Hopkins University conducted a dedicated seminar at Mount Sinai Hospital geriatrics department three years ago warning against inappropriate use of risperdal in the elderly.
7087196 tn?1389306119 I was diagnosed with Bi-Polar in 2005 and also had a child in 2005. My son is now 8 years old and acts like I did around his age. He says and acts in violent ways. He has not done anything to extreme thankfully.
Avatar f tn The atypical antipsychotics can often cause weight gain in both children and adults. Abilify, (aripiprazole) is less likely to cause weight gain or metabolic problems." (from - http://www.baltimorepsych.com/NonStimulants.htm). Point being is that if all he is taking now is risperdal and he is not getting a help either med wise or behavioral therapy for his ADHD - then his ADHD is probably making both his and your life pretty miserable.
603015 tn?1329862973 I did have a cousin though who as a teenager was diagnosed with anorexia and it was connected to OCD and she stablized on Risperdal. Risperdal does have mood stabilization properties though and is approved for that usage so see what happens.
Avatar n tn I wonder about the Risperdal - I believe it is not approved for children under 10 in the U.S. (unless, you are living in another country, then it could be approved there, but I doubt it). ODD is a very serious diagnosis and could be a preceder to bi-polar or other mood/personality disorders (is there a history of severe mental health issues on either side of the family?).
Avatar f tn Kapvay is the only drug which is approved by FDA for the treatment of ADHD in children of age 6-18 .This comes in a non stimulant extensive release tablet form and is always recommended by doctors for children. Kapvay has some other off label uses as well like treating insomnia, in treatment of menopausal symptoms. Sometimes it is also used in treatment of conditions like psychiatric disorders like hyperarousal, sleeping disorder. It can also be used as a mild sedative.
Avatar m tn is resperdal suitable for children who are highly irritable when they are at the age of 3 or 4 months? This discussion is related to Risperdal.
Avatar f tn The Risperdal can have many negative effects on children. These type of anti-psychotic drugs have never been tested on children so the long term side effects of children using this drug are relatively unknown. My brother was put on this drug when he was younger and has suffered from extreme weight gain and facial tics. The tics never go away - even with stopping the drug. Risperdal is not usually used for PTSD or ADHD as it is an anti-psychotic.
Avatar n tn what are withdrawl effects on children age 9year old female coming off risperidone? dosages was 0.5mg of rispiradone in the morning with 72 mg of concerta for ADHD. AND A 0.
Avatar f tn is it that common to put a child that young under medication, or to diagnose him as ADHD , i am living in medial east.
Avatar f tn First, I can find no indication that risperdal is indicated for ADHD. " In 2006, the FDA approved risperidone for the treatment of irritability in children and adolescents with autism.[6] The FDA's decision was based in part on a study of autistic people with severe and enduring problems of violent meltdowns, aggression, and self-injury; risperidone is not recommended for autistic people with mild aggression and explosive behavior without an enduring pattern.
Avatar f tn simple motor tics, shrugging of shoulders, eye blinking, opening jaw. No, these can be behaviours common to those suffering from anxiety. But, there should be other indications as well - the reason for my question - "could this be the issue"? By the way, your "list" missed many common behaviours to anxiety; behaviours seen only in children and not adults.
Avatar f tn He was diagnosed with bipolar and then also with ADHD he takes risperdal for bipolar and adderall for adhd. The adderall has been wonderful it really helped a lot the risperdal i am not so sure as he still gets very angry and aggressive he has also been recently diagnosed with social anxiety disorder.
Avatar n tn I know that current research suggests that risperdal is infact harmful to use with dementia patients. Has anyone had a similar experience? I would prefer to be able to talk with my father in his final years (even if he doesn't recognize me) rather than look at someone who resembles Nicholson in the final scene of Cuckoo's nest. Any comments would be greatly appreciated. --J.
Avatar f tn for use in children younger than 5, although doctors may legally prescribe it as an off-label use. “Kyle at the time was very aggressive and easily agitated, so you try to find medication that can make him more easily controlled, because you can’t reason with an 18-month-old,” Dr. deGravelle said in a telephone interview. But Kyle was not autistic — according to several later evaluations, including one that Dr. deGravelle arranged with a neurologist.
Avatar f tn The side affect that concerned me was the eating. Sometimes he would eat until he vomited. Apparently, risperdal turns off the switch in the brain that signals fullness. His eating was becoming a real problem, so we asked about Abilify. He's been on that a good while, and it works. He's taking 5mg 3 times per day. It's not perfect, but it's better than the rages. I will warn you that it does make him kind of sleepy, but not too bad.
16638194 tn?1449934941 I am in desperate need of some insight regarding medication for Autism and ADHD. My son is 7 years old. He started out on Risperdal when he was 4 but we quickly took him off because he quickly ballooned by 15 lbs. in 1 month. We eventually ended up on Abilify and Tenex (Guanfacine) and he's been taking that combination for about 3 years. Now we are at the point where those two meds were not working at all and we were already at the approved dosage limits.
559509 tn?1216180446 t think she was a president or anything at the time. Risperdal is commonly used for manic or mixed episodes. At the time in which she was beginning the Risperdal she had been off her bipolar meds for sometime. Not sure how long she had used it or any side effects which may have occurred (lost touch) She is currently just using lithium and doing well.
Avatar m tn I take 40mg citalopram (generic version of celexa) and 225 mg Venlafaxine (for effexor) each day, then went to 5mg saphris in am and bedtime. I wondered about using Risperdal hoping not to have the same side effects. My husband is really concerned as are my closest friends.
Avatar f tn I have asked my gyno several times about Mirena but she refuses to put one in since I have not had any children. Apparently it has a higher chance of embedding into the uterus if you have never had a child. So that is out. And the copper-T causes heavier bleeding and more painful periods so that is out. So it seems I may have to have a D and C or something if this period doesn't stop soon or of it continues to produce 2+ weeks of bleeding at every period.
Avatar n tn There was no order and the fighting and hitting and screaming and jumping and total disrespect to others in the house the entire 9 yards !So the Dr add a dose of Risperdal at night to help curve the extreme behavior changes when the pill wore off . So now they take their concerta and risperdal at 7 am every morning and at 7 pm they take one more risperdal pill and life is so much better in our home now .
406058 tn?1210594632 As Sandman mentioned, sometimes it takes different meds to treat different children. Some children need different dosages, some need totally different meds. IF the meds are not working, then call the dr-- no point in continuing them if its worse!!!
