Risperdal use in autism

Common Questions and Answers about Risperdal use in autism

risperdal

Avatar n tn My 9 yr old grandson has a seizure disorder that may be linked to autism. He is on Depakot & Risperdal. The main problem is his inability to realize when he needs to use the toilet, resulting in having bowel movements. He can sit forever until someone notices the odor. It doesn't bother him & his doctors don't seem too concerned. Could the medication w or w/o the disorders have anything to do w/this problem. Or, is it some other reason?
Avatar n tn my 4 year old with autism was on risperdal, he had some levels run high so his dr decided to switch him to Tenex...he took his last risperdal 1mg tablet 3 times/day on friday night 11-12-10...he started the tenex 1/2 of a 1mg tablet twice/day saturday morning. since sunday he has been very irritable and aggressive, with very frequent outburst of screaming constantly, hitting himself in the head and bitting, pinching, hitting, kicking, pushing, and scratching himself and others...
16638194 tn?1449934941 I am in desperate need of some insight regarding medication for Autism and ADHD. My son is 7 years old. He started out on Risperdal when he was 4 but we quickly took him off because he quickly ballooned by 15 lbs. in 1 month. We eventually ended up on Abilify and Tenex (Guanfacine) and he's been taking that combination for about 3 years. Now we are at the point where those two meds were not working at all and we were already at the approved dosage limits.
Avatar m tn It was a game changer for that disorder. While risperdal is used off label for things like autism and a lot of people that have autism (anywhere on the spectrum) often have overlapping adhd as a secondary diagnosis, this doesn't mean that the syptoms of adhd will improve with risperdal. Risperdal seems to help with aggressive behavior and behavior problems in general and likely communication. with kids on the spectrum. It seems to help with irritability and aggressiveness.
1572541 tn?1310208423 I had a stroke caused by the medication risperdal. My dr. was very negligent in giving it to me. She took me off the meds that were woking cold turkey which is a no-no as well. 1mg clonapin 3 times a day to none overnight. This alone is dangerous but to then prescibe me ridsperdal on top of that is attempted manslaughter. If I had the money I would sue them. Has anyone else had a stroke due to risperdal? It has been 6 months and I am recovering.
Avatar n tn This question is in regard to a pre-adolescent boy with autism. The Risperdal no longer controls his behaviors; he is laughing hysterically all the time, running, is violent and teachers are afraid of him. He is non-verbal and is a large boy for his age of 9 years and is entering puberty. The medicine does apparently help him sleep, but that is the only benefit we are now seeing. Thank you for your reply. This discussion is related to <a href='http://www.medhelp.
Avatar f tn Just an update with another question. Hes been on the Risperdal for over a week now taking .25 ml of it every morning about 730a. I say about because there has been times the dose is given 10mins early due to situations preventing his taking it on time so he'll get it a little early or a few minutes after 730a. At first the medication seemed to be doing well. He was A LOT calmer, listened well and behaved wonderfully.
Avatar f tn She has autism and it is hard for her to sleep. If you are interested in melatonin talk to your doctor. Your body produces it naturally and it is a supplement.
Avatar n tn I am writing for answers for my 15 Year old son with Autism. He has been on Risperdal for about 5 years now and was taking 4mg x 2 daily, HIGH, I KNOW. He is 5'10" 165 lbs. For about the past 6 months he has started with some new behaviors. I relayed these to his Psychiatrist and she has had no comment on them. I researched them myself and found they mimic Tardive dyskinesia in many ways. I have found a new Psychiatrist but can not get in to see her for approx 2 more weeks.
Avatar f tn We have used Risperdal with our 12 year old son in the past, 2nd and 3rd grade, but due to weight gain he had to be taken off it. We had major problems with sleep so when he went off the meds he went back to not sleeping. Then we found Melatonin, it is a god sent. It is a natural supplement that has helped a lot of children with atuism and other disorders that effect sleeping. As for the agression we have tried behavioral programs that help with it. Good luck.
1142551 tn?1264736930 Like I said the risperdal was a lqst resort. He will be 4 in Sept. and his dose is .25mg cut in half with one half in AM and one half in the night. Since starting 3 days ago the past 2 mornings he has had huge unbelievable tantrums (which isnt out of character generally speaking). Usually mornings are a great time of day for him and I kn ow he isnt tired because since adding the risredal he has slept all night for the first time ever (I think).
Avatar n tn The Department of Geriatrics at Johns Hopkins University conducted a dedicated seminar at Mount Sinai Hospital geriatrics department three years ago warning against inappropriate use of risperdal in the elderly.
5757880 tn?1395578022 I spoke with the primary and she basically stated that I need to consider all that the pysch wants to do. I asked for her expierence in the meds and she stated she has young patients on Risperdal and as long as the dosage is correct then it's fine. However, my Aunt did her own research and spoke with a friend of hers who also has worked with these meds and she said she wouldn't put her kids on it.
Avatar f tn Kapvay is the only drug which is approved by FDA for the treatment of ADHD in children of age 6-18 .This comes in a non stimulant extensive release tablet form and is always recommended by doctors for children. Kapvay has some other off label uses as well like treating insomnia, in treatment of menopausal symptoms. Sometimes it is also used in treatment of conditions like psychiatric disorders like hyperarousal, sleeping disorder. It can also be used as a mild sedative.
Avatar n tn I wonder about the Risperdal - I believe it is not approved for children under 10 in the U.S. (unless, you are living in another country, then it could be approved there, but I doubt it). ODD is a very serious diagnosis and could be a preceder to bi-polar or other mood/personality disorders (is there a history of severe mental health issues on either side of the family?).
Avatar f tn First, I can find no indication that risperdal is indicated for ADHD. " In 2006, the FDA approved risperidone for the treatment of irritability in children and adolescents with autism.[6] The FDA's decision was based in part on a study of autistic people with severe and enduring problems of violent meltdowns, aggression, and self-injury; risperidone is not recommended for autistic people with mild aggression and explosive behavior without an enduring pattern.
Avatar n tn She took Risperdal for just over two years and went off of it in early March, 2009 (due to sedating side effects). She has taken 25 mg daily of Strattera for a year and a half, and still takes it. Since she went off the Risperdal, her weight has dropped steadily (from 54 lbs to 51 lbs). Her "stimming" consists of running in short little bursts, so she's constantly expending energy. Incidentally, despite all of her movement, she has very low muscle tone.
603015 tn?1329862973 I did have a cousin though who as a teenager was diagnosed with anorexia and it was connected to OCD and she stablized on Risperdal. Risperdal does have mood stabilization properties though and is approved for that usage so see what happens.
Avatar f tn Im 35 wks pregnant with my third son and its affecting the behavior of my 5 yr old in a very negative way. What are ways I can help him through this transition? We talk about the new baby to him all the time reassuring him that his new baby brother will love him like we all do. He wasnt this bad when I was pregnant with my 2 yr old but Im afraid Im losing him.
Avatar m tn I am wondering if this is a plausible cause. He was also on Risperdal and Depakote and Trileptal and Terazadone and Lamictal, of course not all at the same time. I am sure I spelled all these meds wrong. We are having trouble finding any professional who will take an active interest in the urgency of our problem with both the aggression and the onset of these tic behaviors. We really need some help.
Avatar f tn for use in children younger than 5, although doctors may legally prescribe it as an off-label use. “Kyle at the time was very aggressive and easily agitated, so you try to find medication that can make him more easily controlled, because you can’t reason with an 18-month-old,” Dr. deGravelle said in a telephone interview. But Kyle was not autistic — according to several later evaluations, including one that Dr. deGravelle arranged with a neurologist.
Avatar n tn There is much less information about potential immune system involvement in autism. There have been many reports of persons with autism having verified immune system "problems." This has led many people to suggest that there is immune system dysregulation involved. Most of this speculation occurs in fringe journals with relatively few large scale studies conducted by researchers clearly qualified to conduct such research. There is certainly a need for more study.
5274485 tn?1385860167 Well, certainly autism as a whole can always use more research. In my area, girls with autism do get as much attention as boys. We see more of an issue recognizing add from adhd. Good luck to Joanne.
1415407 tn?1389254933 I can find a study that links rubbing your head and patting your belly while trying to conceive to Autism in children. The cause is unknown and all the study says here is that abused use (taking more than your body really requires for a particular ailment) is in the behavior pattern of parents with children diagnosed as having Autism. That also does not account for parents who depend solely on holistic methods and still have a child diagnosed with Autism.
Avatar f tn The Risperdal can have many negative effects on children. These type of anti-psychotic drugs have never been tested on children so the long term side effects of children using this drug are relatively unknown. My brother was put on this drug when he was younger and has suffered from extreme weight gain and facial tics. The tics never go away - even with stopping the drug. Risperdal is not usually used for PTSD or ADHD as it is an anti-psychotic.
Avatar f tn Posted this on community forum also. My grandson who is 14 years old came home yesterday in such an emotional state. He sobbed so hard and began hitting his chest saying "No Hitting" as he looked his mom in the eyes.
Avatar f tn What specialmom said is correct, the prescribing physicians are the ones who can best answer these questions. I would call them as soon as you can to get these answers. Have you ever considered getting a autism/seizure dog for your child? My daughter who has ASD has a service dog and he has made a huge difference in her life. Not only would the dog help prevent the self-harming behavior, but he/she could alert you when a seizure was happening.
Avatar m tn //www.medhelp.org/forums/Autism/show/85 They can help give you pointers, things to try, or at least comfort that you're not alone. Good luck.
