Risperdal side effects in elderly

Common Questions and Answers about Risperdal side effects in elderly

risperdal

Avatar n tn I am being met with resistance and am concerned that the attending physician is completely in the dark about several studies regarding the negative effects of these particular drugs in elderly patients with dementia, or any helpful alternatives. Are there any alternatives to using antipsychotic medications in this case? I have a hard time believing he is being kept in this state for other than that it makes him less work for the staff. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Avatar n tn Yes but he needs Risperdone to bring him to normal level and later Depokoate to keep his mood stable.Risperdone has numerous serious side effects especially in elderly patients so is kept only till required. It will tapered very slowly over 4-6 weeks so generally symptoms wont return. It can be restarted by his psychiatrist if they do so dont worry.
Avatar n tn The geriatrics department at Johns Hopkins sponsored a seminar at Mount Sinai last year specifically dedicated to the inappropriateness of risperdal for the elderly patient. Long term use of risperdal will result in tardive dyskinesia, siezures, and degradation of sentience.
Avatar f tn It is normally used to treat people with serious mental health problems like schizophrenia. It is a newer type of antipsychotic drug and may have fewer side effects than older antipsychotic drugs. Risperidone has sometimes been given to people in the later stages of dementia.
Avatar n tn I am on risperdal and I was wondering what the possible side effects are of smoking marijuana while on this medication.
1286779 tn?1400012806 I think Jaybay just gave you great advice. Lots of elderly have different side effects than the more common ones. Medications can easily interact and sometimes medications that have been fine for a long time all of a sudden aren't. A gerentologist probably is the best place to look for answers. When my mom was alive, we had a few kinks with her medications.
Avatar m tn s when my friend realized that I needed to see the doctor. While I ws in the waiting room the right side of my face started to tense up in a half smile that really hurt, and my tongue started writhing out of control so I couldn't really talk. I grabbed this other patient and asked her what was happening to me. They rushed me down to the doctor's office and gave me benedryl directly into my vein, at which point I crashed for several hours and woke up fine.
Avatar m tn It can cause effects that appear to be psychiatric at times. If its akathesia or extra pyramidal side effects then your psychiatrist could titrate the anti-psychotics and add a side effect pill to control it. If its tardive dyskinesia such as I have, which can emerge in a variety of forms including tardive dystonia then they would switch you over to Clozaril immediately as it can be very dangerous in advanced forms (such as I have).
Avatar m tn hi. i just stopped taking risperdal after being on it over 1.5 years last week because of the side effects. it was supposed to be helping with the ptsd related symptoms but found it was making them worse. i had a really bad night with it last week and decided i'd had enough. by all means get off of it if it doesn't seem to be helping---just let your doctor know first.
Avatar m tn Sensipar works be lessening the amount of parathyroid hormone (PTH) released by the parathyroid gland. Less PTH means less calcium and phosphorus are released from the bones. Sensipar is prescribed for secondary hyperparathyroidism in patients with chronic kidney disease on dialysis, hypercalcemia in patients with parathyroid carcinoma, and severe hypercalcemia in patients with primary hyperparathyroidism who are unable to undergo parathyroidectomy.
337492 tn?1212458836 I was prescribed 1mg but after reading the horrible stories about the side effects such as lactation, weight gain and zombie head I split my tablets in half. Not perfect halves but close enough. I read more people had less side effects on .5mg. So opinions please?? Nothing puts me to sleep except Tamazepam, which is habit forming and Seroquel makes me comotose on just 25mg so this seemed like an option.
Avatar f tn The neurologist put him on risperdal. I just read horrible side effects, like breasts on boys. Is there a more " beginner" drug? Since we see a neurologist instead of child psychologist, I am fearful he doesn't know as much about behavioral medications. Sorry so long.
Avatar m tn my doctor discontinued risperdal because it caused milk in my breast. that was june 8.......... well i still got milk in my breast.... now what?
2010625 tn?1329372056 I really dislike medication changes...it is always a roll of the dice to see what it is going to do...
Avatar n tn Risperdal could be causing side effects. It caused a lot of side effects in me and when I got better I had my Pdoc taper it to 0.5 mg and will soon stop it.
Avatar f tn My concern is that our friend seems to be caught in a downward spiral of overmedication, in which new drugs treat side effects of old drugs, but create new side effects. I am writing instead of him basically because he is so debilitated that he doesn't even have the energy or acumin to be asking probing questions.
Avatar m tn Okay, let me ask this a different way? I want to get off the saphris because of the side effects but am afraid of being suicidal again. I'd heard Risperdal is used as a "booster" med for people being on anti-depressants. I take 40mg citalopram (generic version of celexa) and 225 mg Venlafaxine (for effexor) each day, then went to 5mg saphris in am and bedtime. I wondered about using Risperdal hoping not to have the same side effects.
886552 tn?1241590297 The symptoms you describe could come from Risperdal, in part, but more likely are the outcropping of the underlying anxiety..you should not stop your medication without sorting this out with your doctor.
1798419 tn?1315810427 told me that Effexor may attribute to weight gain, and it DOES state this in the side effects printed from the manufacturer, so your Dr. is incorrect. Do your homework and don't trust all the Doctors, find a good one, and also consider natural health options if you possibly can. Good luck!
1625195 tn?1332178662 Is there any way possible to cut the hunger side-effects? Or any tips to battle the nausea that it causes? Before this whole medicine nonsense was happening, I was trying to lose weight (safely!) and this hunger pain and headaches are making this goal really difficult. And the nausea is making day to day tasks harder than the depression was making things. And this is the last round of questions, promise! Its about the Citalopram/Celexa. There is a suit going against Celexa.
886552 tn?1241590297 yer ive been taking it for a year now and ive shorly got used to it can it cause sum of those other symptoms that i have explained and its just not suttle emotions its like feeling nothyn at all so things just feel pointless but sumtimes i feel good and feel my feelings a bit but thats very rare also can risperdal make u lose alot of pleasure in ur sex life and and if u dont need it can it mess with ur head keep in touch JoSh......................
Avatar f tn But for me any kind of medication is the last resort, especially whilst their brains are growing. All medicines have side effects. Some of the medication prescribed for autism/ADHD can have permanent effects such as tics etc. Also, you don't have a diagnosis yet, so how do they know what to prescribe? I know other parents who have had hormes prescribed to help with sleep.
