574118 tn?1305135284 monotherapy and only AP approved for depression etc... What is the exact I mean the EXACT meaning of a mood stabilizer. Some would say seroquel is one, but I began to wonder. OR else I am getting worse perhaps: 1. 12 years ago, it was depression only (took antidepressant+risperidal) 2. with an antidepressant only (didn't know yet my case I was trying to stop medications) after a while got mania (things changed since then) 3. so added again the risperdal 4.
Avatar m tn I have a thing against antiphycotics but I do take Lamictal, a mood stabilizer. You may want to give Risperdal a try.
Avatar n tn We are very new to this, but my question is my loved one has been on Depakote and Risperdal for 8 days now and the mood stabilizer seems to be working great, completely stable in moods but still in the hospital. My concern is that the delusions are still there and even getting worse. Could it be the confinement or is there another medication to address this. What is the Risperdal supposed to address. Are there medications available to address the delusions?
Avatar m tn it's alright and continue to taper as advised by your pdoc xanax is better for anxiety so long as you don't get the habit, because anxiety is on and off it's like you crave for alcohol once everynow and then to get drunk or drowsy.
1255530 tn?1269867619 I did better on Risperdal and Seroquel (which do have more of a mood stabilization property, Zyprexa is noted for this as well but for myself it caused extreme weight gain and sedation, Abilify is less likely to cause weight gain and sedation of course). All this you would have to discuss with your psychiatrist.
1515545 tn?1291395764 I might get brave enough to try Lamictyl one day, but going to see how things go for a while without a mood stabilizer. Depression is the main problem for me. Hope that helps to understand more about bi-polar.
Avatar f tn It would be better if his Riperdal dose is reduced and an effective mood stabilizer like Depakote/Lamictal is started along with maintanence dose of Riperdal as Riperdal dulls you.I had to take 3 mg for a couple of months and it really dulled me.Now I am on 0.5 mg/day and a week away from being off it after being 4 months on it.I am on a mood stabilizer.
750223 tn?1234384662 HELLO... mood stabilizer????? Lithium, depakote, lamictal... tegretol... You can't typically manage Bipolar with out a mood stabilizer... straight antidepressants do normally cause a Bipolar person to stay manic with out the mood stabilizer on board..... Haldol is an antipsychotic- ativan is for anxiety.....
Avatar f tn The adderall has been wonderful it really helped a lot the risperdal i am not so sure as he still gets very angry and aggressive he has also been recently diagnosed with social anxiety disorder.
674607 tn?1240017232 The Phase II study antipsychotic agent I am on glycine is not approved as a medication yet (and has not been studied as a mood stabilizer, I need a mood stabilizer as well) but all of the medications I mentioned are and in the U.S. doctors and psychiatrists can prescribe any medication for off label purposes.
603015 tn?1329862973 I did have a cousin though who as a teenager was diagnosed with anorexia and it was connected to OCD and she stablized on Risperdal. Risperdal does have mood stabilization properties though and is approved for that usage so see what happens.
Avatar m tn That most probably is prolactin elevation which can cause female hormones to increase in males so that there is sexual dysfunction and pain in the nipple area. Having discharge from the nipples can occur too. I did experience that when I was on standard antipsychotics and its a common side effect. It depends on its severity. Having breast milk is rare but that can happen. It should go away in time. However keep your doctor informed and they will follow up.
Avatar m tn I will now only have to take my mood stabilizer which I have been taking for a number of years.Has anybody in this forum stopped an anti psychotic medication and just remained on their mood stabilizer and how did they feel about it.
1806584 tn?1316208037 Lamotrogine is a mood stabilizer and keeps you in the middle; it's not just for depression. Usually, one takes a mood stabilizer, then something for the highs and the lows; hopefully, gaining equal ground.
Avatar n tn Depakoate is of course a mood stabilizer but it generally works better on mania than depression. Risperdal is of course an antipsychotic but it also has full mood stabilization effects. Generally (it states this on the package insert) anti-psychotics are used with caution in people that are elderly so his psychiatrist is probably seeing whether he absolutely needs it or not.
Avatar f tn jHas anyone tried taking two antidepressants along with a mood stabilizer and had good results? I'm currently taking Depakote and Cymbalta, but thinking of adding Prozac for added depression benefits. I'm also on an antipsychotic, Geodon.
Avatar f tn I stopped Risperdal since I'm now on another medication that is a mood stabilizer for me. I tapered off from 6mg to 3mg then 3mg every other day then stopped completely. Mood is stable, no symptoms of mental illness. Stopped Risperdal mid April. I started a period 2 weeks ago after having years of no periods or my one-day one-wipe periods (bleeding lasting only one wipe of the toilet paper) every few months. Had constant ovarian cysts.
Avatar n tn I tell you what, there's no way in hell that the crap in risperdal / risperidone left my body in 5 days! It took about 8 months of hardcore cardio exercise for me to purge this poison from my system. I would sweat so much after I tapered off of this, and it would smell like putrid chemicals, and definitely not something that would ever come from a human being.. Please NEVER take this stuff unless you want to be chemically lobotomized..
Avatar m tn I'm starting Geodon this week. I've been told it's more sedating than the Risperdal that I was on so I've been advised to take it at night. Anyone have any experiences with Geodon?
Avatar f tn I would NOT under any circumstances, reading the literature, start an SSRI, SNRI unless you are severely severely depressed and have exhausted all other avenues. Some psychiatrists still prescribe them with a mood stabilizer but the research is indicating they are causing rapid cycling in people with bipolar. Without a mood stabilizer they can flip you into hypomania or mania. But don't take my word. If you google antidepressants rapid cycling you'll find a whole host of articles.
Avatar f tn m now down to 2 antidepressants and 1 mood stabilizer. (I am also a rapid cycler). Everybody is different and responds to medication differently. The best and most all-around useful mood stabilizer for me has been Topamax. It is an anti-convulsant, also indicated for propylaxis of migraines (which I also have). The great side effect, if you're overweight, is WEIGHT LOSS. Be careful, though. I've lost 54 lb.
Avatar m tn Only a psychiatrist or neurologist would know for sure but if the movement disorders have decreased after stopping the medication then most probably it is not tardive dyskinesia as that is permanent and generally worsens after stopping the medication that caused it because it can be masked while it is worsened. If it was being used as a mood stabilizer (not an antipsychotic) Lamictal and Tegretol are quite effective mood stabilizers.
519035 tn?1348275773 Depakoate is a mood stabilizer. Risperdal and Seroquel are both antipsychotics. If a person is psychotic they require an antipsychotic. Bipolar with psychotic features is one form of bipolar. You could ask your psychiatrist what specific form of bipolar you have and if you require an antipsychotic at this time. They could decide from there. As for mood stabilizers, atypical (the current generation) antipsychotics are approved for usage as mood stabilizers as well.
1499921 tn?1308446605 I found Abilify somewhat helpful in this regard and all atypical antipsychotics from Risperdal to Abilify are FDA approved as mood stabilizers. However they all have the potential of weight gain. I do require an antipsychotic and a mood stabilizer both as I have schizoaffective disorder but if a person has bipolar they are of course other choices as regards mood stabilizers but it depends on the specific person and their reaction to the medication and how they experience the side effects.
