Risperdal how it works

Common Questions and Answers about Risperdal how it works

risperdal

337492 tn?1212458836 It is only 150mg so I should tolerate it fine now that I have been on it for a few weeks. I hope it helps. Well, I will pop the risperdal and see what happens!
Avatar n tn Despite being a small, thin woman, I take 60 mgs of Remeron, 60 mg of Buspar, and 15 mg of zolpidem a day for depression, GAD, and severe insomnia (I was hospitalized 3 weeks this past summer for insomnia, and left the hospital taking 25 mgs of zolpidem with 100 mg Seroquel per night, but have gotten down to 15 mgs and cut out the Seroquel).
Avatar f tn I just started Invegra 3mg daily which is the new drug in lieu of Risperdal so I will be curious as to how it works. Supposedly, it is just like Risperdal but much more tolerated with less side effects. Maybe something to ask your doc about although I cant comment on personal usage as of yet since it is so new for me.
Avatar n tn I think it is a good medicine for PTSD and it helps with bipolar. It didn't work for me, however, but my brother takes it and it works for him.
Avatar f tn 25 mg, but I am jut not sure if it is normal to start meds this early? Also, if anyone has a child on it how long did it take before you noticed a difference in behaviors?
Avatar f tn yes, i know risperdal works right away. I've taken it before. I'll probably ask at my next apt, as my psychiatrist isnt in a hurry to put me on it yet, she wants to see if the lamictal will work, but at a low dose like 50mg i dont see it happening.
Avatar n tn Geodon works great for some people and horribly for others, like any psych med on the planet. It is less likely to make you gain weight compared to others in the same class, and may be less sedating, but you'll really have no idea how it will work for you until you try it. I think it's also the least likely to cause metabolic problems out of the atypical antipsychotics, but any of them can potentially do that.
4509053 tn?1355665640 I like how adderal works for me. It helps calm me down and clears my mind so I have things I need in my mind not useless info. It helps with the filing of my thoughts. I don't have asbergers but just thought I would respond back. I hated taking Ritalin I felt drugged. And I think adderal is a non stimulant.
Avatar n tn And ya, he is on a ton of meds. Something does need to be done and unfortunately, it will probably take trial and error to find what works the best. Keep in really close contact with your new doc. Report all that is going on. This is very complicated and beyond anything I have dealt with. And do keep in touch. I would like to know how things are going. I can recommend some good sites for working with the ADHD if you are interested. Best wishes.
Avatar m tn My roommate has been going on a psychotic episode for 4 weeks now. She was a functioning meth and marijuana user and didn't show any signs of psychosis until recently. Around the new year, she quit using meth for about 2 weeks. She then started using again, but not that much; maybe a couple times in a day or when she was tired. She more regularly smoked marijuana (MJ) because she says it helps her handle her anxiety.
Avatar n tn Depakoate is of course a mood stabilizer but it generally works better on mania than depression. Risperdal is of course an antipsychotic but it also has full mood stabilization effects. Generally (it states this on the package insert) anti-psychotics are used with caution in people that are elderly so his psychiatrist is probably seeing whether he absolutely needs it or not.
Avatar m tn It seems to help with irritability and aggressiveness. Because of this, some doctors may use it for adhd if that is how a person presents. Now with regards to tics. My son has tics. He has two types. Simple vocal tics which are a hum or throat clearing sound. Complex vocal tics are words and he's had those previously. He also has motor tics. His change in terms of how they present.
Avatar n tn Well it depends. Risperdal is an antipsychotic and it is effective in treating psychosis. Asperger's is a developmental disability and thus doesn't specifically respond to antipsychotics. What is the Risperdal specifically being used for? Also there is a community specifically for Asperger's.
Avatar f tn My son took risperdal for a long time for his mood disorder. He was very manic without it. The side affect that concerned me was the eating. Sometimes he would eat until he vomited. Apparently, risperdal turns off the switch in the brain that signals fullness. His eating was becoming a real problem, so we asked about Abilify. He's been on that a good while, and it works. He's taking 5mg 3 times per day. It's not perfect, but it's better than the rages.
Avatar n tn i am suffering from this too after stopping respirdal. how much should it take?
Avatar n tn If Risperdal is treating psychosis it will of course return when stopped. If its treating mood disorders same in that regard. Best to have your psychiatrist have your medications adjusted to something else. As for the second poster what you describe could be a medication interaction and pressure sores can be lethal. Speak to the physician in charge or the hospital complaint division and make sure they adjust her medications and insure she is properly treated. They need to follow up at all times.
Avatar n tn hi OrenCohen. I want to welcome you to Med Help. Is your doctor aware of this side effect you are associating with discontinuing the Risperdal? All medications such as this can have withdrawal issues. Cold turkey going without Risperdal would be very rare for a doctor to recommend. Are you sure this was what your doctor wanted you to do? Again, this is not a normal recommendation and especially for a 4 mg dose. You need to see your doctor again. Now, it's been 2 months.
1142551 tn?1264736930 Usually mornings are a great time of day for him and I kn ow he isnt tired because since adding the risredal he has slept all night for the first time ever (I think). Is it one of those things that get worse before it gets better? Does it take a while to build u in the system? all of it is just breaking my heart. I wish I knew why he goes into that "zone". Is it just the aggression that im ultimately going to see an improvement with? BTW he is DX with PDD-NOS.
574118 tn?1305135284 People generally stay on a constant dose of seroquel once they find one that works, although you might have to tweak the dose depending on how much the underlying issue is being exacerbated. For instance, I increased my buspirone over the summer to 20 mg b.i.d. from 15 because of increased anxiety, but then went back down again when the anxiety was feeling pretty controlled and it was giving me some brain fuzz. I did not get stuck at a higher dose.
Avatar m tn I responded relatively well to Risperdal. It is rare although not unknown that it can cause any form of heart arrythmia (this can happen with all the atypicals) but if you mean lowering blood pressure that is different and that can happen with all antipsychotics and is generally of less concern. Orthostatic hypertension (having difficulty when suddenly standing) can happen with all antipsychotics for example.
Avatar n tn He takes 3 mg of tenex, 2 mg of risperdal and 10 mg of prozac. He still is impulsive and gets into arguments. It seems to be an ongoing problem to adjust his meds. We see the psychaitrist monthly. He has been on other meds and they either made him worse or stopped working. We used Abilify to 15 mg and it stopped being effective. All stimulants made him hyper and agitated. I find this is a very time consuming difficult process. I am recording his daily behaviors.
Avatar f tn How in the world would risperdal help someone that has anxiety alrdy and then stopped using opiates and got double anxiety help.
Avatar f tn I was put on Risperdal 1/2 mg in sept 13 08,recently (last week stopped it ) had to me slighty taper,Im wondering if yoou really neeed to taper,Im not bipolar I have depression and anxiety and was put on Risperdal for racing thoughts,Does any one or has anyone ever just stopped Risperdal without tapering,,my pharmisist said its not nesa sarry byt i dont realy know for sure,i think sometimes he just tells me what he thinks i want to hear,,,,THanks
886552 tn?1241590297 how long did it take for him to feel good again after he got of the risperdal and how long would it take for the risperdal to leave ur systym after taking it for a year to c if the risperdal is actually creating my problems can risperdal cause loss of emotional and just general life feelings yer i will discuss it with my doctor keep in touch peace
Avatar m tn Wellbutrin is the least likely out of the anti-depressents to be likely to cause mania but it still can happen. With the SSRI's its far more common. It would be very rare for Risperdal to cause mania as generally it has a full mood stablization effect (in addition to an antipsychotic effect) so if that is the only medication you are taking it might be an adverse reaction. You could look up the medication website and discuss that with your psychiatrist.
5154541 tn?1366808691 Thanks, for the response for me it works and I don't have any side effects which is good I talked to my therapist and she said as soon as I get any wierd effect to let her know and she'll change it. I've been on it for a month and half.
Avatar m tn I don't know but I never filled my Risperidal prescription. That's what my doctor gave me last time and when I read the side effects I decided it was just too much for me. I have to work and be "professional" as much as possible, so the risk of movement disorder is just too much of a risk. I think I did read the disorder is permanent, but I don't know for sure. It can also cause "zombie like" state, it said, forgot what that's called.
559509 tn?1216180446 t see hardly any mention of it around this site. Does it make you gain weight like Depakote? Does anyone out there take it for Bipolar Disorder Type 2? Any opinions or thoughts? I am currently on Lamictal and Welbutrin. I show mixed tendencies ( is that type 1 ),and my Dr gave me Risperdal for what appeard to be a manic state( I was off all meds at the time except Welbutrin which may have excaserbated my mania).
