Risperdal for tics

Common Questions and Answers about Risperdal for tics

risperdal

Avatar n tn It looks like the Risperdal could be the reason for the motor tics. Which would make more sense then the Concerta being the problem. And Risperdal could be the reason for the weight gain too. Here is a link to the info I was looking at on Risperdal - http://www.crazymeds.us/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Meds/Risperdal By the way, don't suddenly stop the Risperdal. You must sloooowly come off of it. Good luck!
Avatar m tn gov/pmc/articles/PMC3036957/ Personally, I would much rather try a drug for tics like risperdal than the older meds like haldol! But work with your doctor!
Avatar f tn My now 9yr. old boy has been on risperdal for almost a year and is now experiencing vocal and physical tics. I recently took him off the meds with doctor's approval and his withdrawls are more tics than before. Hopefully after leaving his system we can start him on something else. Was leary about risperdal in the first place and it was good for a while, but every individual is different. It's up to you to decide, but I hoped I helped some. Parent of 9yr.
Avatar f tn Everything came back normal, because as those would not cause tics, they would increase them.As i told by the doc,he has to have motor tics, and at least a vocal tic for awhile.Doc actually said a scan would not help diagnosis.Im soooo confused.i love my son dearly, but i dont know how to help him.Lately hes been overly emotional because of meds.Am i doing something wrong?.....
Avatar f tn i stopped taking risperdal a week ago and i feel lousy. can anyone relate ? im still on lithium.
898530 tn?1268618782 We have tried other meds that have not really helped her to sleep at night and she has started going thru some behavior issues such as biting herself and others plus tantrums like not wanting to go to school or even not wanting to get out of my car to go to the store or come inside the house. I tried staying away from Risperdal for so long now...they recommened it to me for her about a year ago but I did not want to give it to her.
Avatar f tn I have two children with Tourestte's - one with Asperger's. My dad has Tourette's. I had Tourette's as a kid - the tics aren't the big deal - the underlying problems behind the tics are. They see doctors that specialize in Tourette's. My children's tics did not start until 5 or 6. My son's tics which involved hand licking and sniffing pretty much disappeared by 9. My daughter had throat clearing and also a hand lick.
Avatar f tn Tenex, Zolof, Depakote and Risperdal(new). Now I wonder am I over medicating my son? Is his liver going to be shot by the age of 18? He does have a lot of behavioral problems and agression and he has tics . I've tired other ADHD meds but they don't work he tends to get even more agressive. Or he starts getting his tics. Should I get him off his meds? Or how do I get him off so many meds?
449440 tn?1206887304 I took it for anxiety/depression and noticed that it also took my tics away. You might want to try that. I am off the med now and my tics have returned but I am thinking of trying it again or something else. Good luck, I know how you feel, it's the worst.
Avatar f tn I believe risperadal is linked to a condition that causes permanent tics, but research it yourself to be sure. Having slept all night for the last three nights is great, especially if you are sleep deprived. But if you had the choice between sleepless nights and a side effect or permanent damage, then you may decide to make a different choice.
Avatar n tn We are on Risperdal for my 8 yr old son's anger. He also takes tenex for his tics and attention and prozac for his anxiety. He is kind of an ABC diagnosis kid. He has Aspergers and tourettes and OCD. Most likely PANDAS because of his history of strep and behaviors, but we can't get him treatment for the underlying issue whish is his immune response that makes him get worse symptoms. He still gets shor tempered on the risperdal and tenex and prozac.
Avatar m tn He has been on a variety of medications over the past two years to try and control his behavior. Recently he developed facial tics that, after research, look like tardive dyskinesia. Naturally this has me VERY worried, especially about the permanence of this problem. The only thing I can think of that might have caused this was Seroquel. He took it at bed time for about two years. I am wondering if this is a plausible cause.
4509053 tn?1355665640 He is doing well on Intunviv (4mg) during the day and was doing well on Risperdal (.5mg) for mood regulation, but it was causing wetting his pants during the day. Now that he is on a reduced dosage, his outbursts, tantrums, impulsivity, and tics (right now, picking his nose) are worse, and his wetting hasn't improved all that much. Are there any alternatives that could address the same issues, equally well, without the wetting side-effect?
Avatar n tn my son was put of ritilan for ADHD . he ahd been on it for about year...then they prescribed him Prozac for depression. within a week...he began to have motor ticks ....rolling of the eyes....his eyes were dialated and i took him into the ER...they then told me to have him stop taking the prozac...why give ti to him if the combo is not a goo done and can cause these in kids??? anyone know anything about this??
Avatar f tn Seroquel and Risperdal are both anti psychotic meds usually used for disorders such as Schizoprenia and Bipolar. Some anti psychotic meds are used to treat tourettes, but I have not personally read or heard the two previously mentioned meds being the first used to treat tourettes. I know of haldol being used. Ritalin is very popular for ADD/ADHD. Celexa is an SSRI which is used for depression and can also be used to treat OCD.
1572541 tn?1310208423 for my 5 yr old son who was dx with autism. For 3 years his aggression worsen and he developed tics and gained a tremendous amount of weight which started raising his BP among other things. The dr. decided to wing him off and he ended up developing tardive dyskinsea. That will always be a haunting day I will never forget watching my son suffer from this with the chorea movements. His autism regressed so bad I had to teach him to feed himself again.
Avatar f tn My brother was put on this drug when he was younger and has suffered from extreme weight gain and facial tics. The tics never go away - even with stopping the drug. Risperdal is not usually used for PTSD or ADHD as it is an anti-psychotic. What symptoms is your son having that the Risperdal is supposed to be treating?
Avatar f tn Were you taking a medication for depression? Because certain meds (like Risperdal) can actually make tics start that were not a problem before! Best to consult directly a neurologist than to waste time on other docs who won't recognize TS (or other neurochem problems) anyways. Check-out the Tourette's Syndrome Associations website for a listing of specialists who know/treat TS. Don't waste time, the sooner you get a clear diagnosis, the better.
Avatar n tn We are very new to this, but my question is my loved one has been on Depakote and Risperdal for 8 days now and the mood stabilizer seems to be working great, completely stable in moods but still in the hospital. My concern is that the delusions are still there and even getting worse. Could it be the confinement or is there another medication to address this. What is the Risperdal supposed to address. Are there medications available to address the delusions?
Avatar n tn my 4 year old with autism was on risperdal, he had some levels run high so his dr decided to switch him to Tenex...he took his last risperdal 1mg tablet 3 times/day on friday night 11-12-10...he started the tenex 1/2 of a 1mg tablet twice/day saturday morning. since sunday he has been very irritable and aggressive, with very frequent outburst of screaming constantly, hitting himself in the head and bitting, pinching, hitting, kicking, pushing, and scratching himself and others...
Avatar f tn My son is 6 and is also diagnosed with autism at first they said he was adhd and bipolar but just recently they changed that diagnoses to just autism they said there was no need for a adhd diagnoses because most autistic kids also have all the adhd symptoms as well.

Avatar m tn My son just recently started taking risperdal. I am discovering that good help is very difficult to find. He is currently taking 1.5 mg a day. Last night he could not sleep at all and was afraid because he said the medication made him feel tired but his thoughts are still racing and he can't sleep. Is this something I should inform his doctor about or should I wait for his next week appointment.
Avatar m tn I am 50 years old male and have tics for the past 7 years. My neurologist runs an EMG, but it proved that my muscles are strong and there is no observation of any muscle disorder. He didn't impress upon me that what is the cause of my tics, execpt that he diagnosed that it is mainly due to stress. I still have the tics occassionally, althought it disappeared temporarily when I go abroad for vacation or even just attending business fair. Is my tics considered a tourette syndrome?
Avatar f tn Um i would say that the book Quit It Is good for maybe that kind of situation.
Avatar m tn I'm on Risperdale for 2 years now, mainly for my tics, even though I was obviously depressed and my doctor didn't give me any antidepressant. 6 months later I increase the dose to 2 mg after consulting my doctor. Things go great but my depression is lingering, doctor says it needs time. 6 months after that, I go to her telling her that I can't feel happy or enjoy day to day things. She put on cipralex as well as risperdale.
