I usually only have two racing thoughts compared to 8-9 when I am very manic. Anyhow, I have tried EVERYTHING for sleep and I mean that seriously! I love to get good sleep. My best solution yet is the melatonin and noise machine. I did some research on melatonin and found that a lot of bipolars are depleated of natural melatonin compared to normal folk. If it effects your sleep you could ask your psychiatrist whether you could take the 2 mg. Risperdal dose in the A.M. In general Risperdal is sedating but can sometimes cause sleep disruption but each person responds differently to each medicaation. It would also depend on whether it would make you tired during the day. Also you could ask if the dose could be titrated (spaced out) into two or more doses during the day.
This is only my own opinion. But for me any kind of medication is the last resort, especially whilst their brains are growing. All medicines have side effects. Some of the medication prescribed for autism/ADHD can have permanent effects such as tics etc. Also, you don't have a diagnosis yet, so how do they know what to prescribe? I know other parents who have had hormes prescribed to help with sleep.
Is there any chance that the insomnia is related to the bipolar? Risperdal helps control mania, could that be returning? You can try different things for sleep but need to work with your doctor. They could prescribe something short term to help or you cold try melatonin. So, speak to your doctor for specific guidance of your situation. good luck and let us know how you are doing!
Hi, I had been on Risperdal for about 15 months and I recently stopped taking Risperdal. First of all, my periods which had stopped shortly after starting Risperdal returned and my breasts which were producing milk dried up but now I suffer from insomnia. I sometimes get only 1 1/2 hours of sleep a night. Will this go away on its own?
We are very new to this, but my question is my loved one has been on Depakote and Risperdal for 8 days now and the mood stabilizer seems to be working great, completely stable in moods but still in the hospital. My concern is that the delusions are still there and even getting worse. Could it be the confinement or is there another medication to address this. What is the Risperdal supposed to address. Are there medications available to address the delusions?
my 4 year old with autism was on risperdal, he had some levels run high so his dr decided to switch him to Tenex...he took his last risperdal 1mg tablet 3 times/day on friday night 11-12-10...he started the tenex 1/2 of a 1mg tablet twice/day saturday morning. since sunday he has been very irritable and aggressive, with very frequent outburst of screaming constantly, hitting himself in the head and bitting, pinching, hitting, kicking, pushing, and scratching himself and others...

Adel dont you think it is wrong to take any anti psychotic as a sleeping aid.I am having lots of sleep problems while tapering from Risperdal but I am not even thinking about taking help of any anti psychotic to sleep. Even my Pdoc says it is wrong to do so as an Anti psychotic should only be used for the purpose it was made for.Incidentally my last dose of Risperdal is on 22nd night.
this went on for nearly 3 months. i have been up to 4 mg while on the tablets. Either the risperdal, or the bipolar has flattened my emotions.I get no pleasure out of life anymore. I am currently on depakote and seroquel, but got doubts on the seroquel, cause i hear bad things about all antipsychotics. now my question....is this permanent? The doc took me off the risperdal last month. my last shot waS ON AUGUST 11TH. When will this end? Will i ever get my emotions back?
t live with me anymore if she keeps on doing drugs. So, she left, and she went completely off the risperdal for about 3 days now. And, as I figured, she is currently in the hospital because of an episode. The people that she decided to "hang with" are enablers so they let her go cold turkey on the risperdal even though I told them that she could get psychotic if she does. My friend didn't like risperdal because it made her hallucinate when she tried to smoke marijuana.
risperdal works much like seraquil...for schizophrenia and bipolar disorders..but has a side effect of deep sleep ..vistaril is an antihistamine with a side effect of drowsiness as well..i am glad u got some sleep..sounds like it was much needed..sleep is important to recovery as we become weak without it...i do know some say they have a medicine head after taking seraquil and risperdal....that droggy feeling in the am....
Cool , that's great new's them finding the right dose for you , sometime's that's all it take's instead of switching from med to med . Are you sleeping better now ? . As for Risperdal quiet a few people have problem's with weight gain from that drug i did also , but i found it more effective in smaller dose than higher because i got other side effect's at a higher dose simmilar to the Ziprasidone.
Okay, let me ask this a different way? I want to get off the saphris because of the side effects but am afraid of being suicidal again. I'd heard Risperdal is used as a "booster" med for people being on anti-depressants. I take 40mg citalopram (generic version of celexa) and 225 mg Venlafaxine (for effexor) each day, then went to 5mg saphris in am and bedtime. I wondered about using Risperdal hoping not to have the same side effects.
This question is in regard to a pre-adolescent boy with autism. The Risperdal no longer controls his behaviors; he is laughing hysterically all the time, running, is violent and teachers are afraid of him. He is non-verbal and is a large boy for his age of 9 years and is entering puberty. The medicine does apparently help him sleep, but that is the only benefit we are now seeing. It looks like the Risperdal could be the reason for the motor tics. Which would make more sense then the Concerta being the problem. And Risperdal could be the reason for the weight gain too. Risperdal is such an interesting drug and being used for a wide range of things now. It's an atypical anti psychotic originally used for schizophrenia. It was a game changer for that disorder. While risperdal is used off label for things like autism and a lot of people that have autism (anywhere on the spectrum) often have overlapping adhd as a secondary diagnosis, this doesn't mean that the syptoms of adhd will improve with risperdal.
My mom's medication regeime has had risperdal added to it. She is alteady on zoloff and the standards for alzeheimer's including namenda. Since putting her on the risperdal she sleeps all the time, has had a to be restarted on blodd pressure medication and seems to be losing her mtor skills.
I am very concened about these changes and wonder if the risperdal is the right dosage or medicine.
im in the process of trying to get funding to see two specialist in these feilds to examine me and more than likely switch medications,i thought i was taking the risperidal for an underlying sleep issue,and the effexor xr for depression,i caught this bout with phenomonia early on

I was on Lithium for almost 2 yrs and I can tell you it can certainly screwup your sex drive. I went from 20-30 minutes of bliss to 10 minutes of strain too. The longer you take it the less you will care if you ever have sex again. I am obsessive about sex and my dr had to take me off of it so I went to Risperdal. It was a nice alternative after the transfer period. It kept the voices from getting me nuts.
