We are on Risperdal for my 8 yr old son's anger. He also takes tenex for his tics and attention and prozac for his anxiety. He is kind of an ABC diagnosis kid. He has Aspergers and tourettes and OCD. Most likely PANDAS because of his history of strep and behaviors, but we can't get him treatment for the underlying issue whish is his immune response that makes him get worse symptoms. He still gets shor tempered on the risperdal and tenex and prozac.
In India Risperidone comes as a liquid called Sizodon where 1 ml contains 1 mg and it is dispensed with a dropper which contains a marking for 1 ml and 0.5 ml.Someone told me that for tapering you got to take 0.5mg for a few days and 0.25 mg for a few days before stopping Risperidone totally which I intend to do as even my Pdoc thinks I can be maintained only on Tegretol.Only problem he is out of town till 25th and he wanted a very slow tapering which I did not agree to.
Gosh, it's uncommon to ask what they are giving you medication for? I'd just be unconventional then and ask any way. You need to know. Medication is often just one component to overcoming something. Knowing what the diagnosis is is essential to knowing what else to do!

We are very new to this, but my question is my loved one has been on Depakote and Risperdal for 8 days now and the mood stabilizer seems to be working great, completely stable in moods but still in the hospital. My concern is that the delusions are still there and even getting worse. Could it be the confinement or is there another medication to address this. What is the Risperdal supposed to address. I was "fine" for about 6 years after my last bout of medication (Risperdal and Zoloft) that I quit due to horrible weight gain. So, I am also looking to find the most weight neutral combination as well.
my 4 year old with autism was on risperdal, he had some levels run high so his dr decided to switch him to Tenex...he took his last risperdal 1mg tablet 3 times/day on friday night 11-12-10...he started the tenex 1/2 of a 1mg tablet twice/day saturday morning. since sunday he has been very irritable and aggressive, with very frequent outburst of screaming constantly, hitting himself in the head and bitting, pinching, hitting, kicking, pushing, and scratching himself and others...
The only medications I have tried for OCD is Paxil and Zoloft. I had to go off Paxil because it made me gain a lot of weight. The Zoloft works, but only at a really high dose, 300mg. If you also combine it with a benzo, like Kolonopin, I find it works fairly well. There are 6 or 7 SSRI medications that treat OCD. Most of these have to be on high dosages to help with OCD specificially. I'm sorry that none of those medications worked for you.

My son just recently started taking risperdal. I am discovering that good help is very difficult to find. He is currently taking 1.5 mg a day. Last night he could not sleep at all and was afraid because he said the medication made him feel tired but his thoughts are still racing and he can't sleep. Is this something I should inform his doctor about or should I wait for his next week appointment.
at home though he has been the sweet boy that i know and love, until yesterday. now he has symptoms of odd, add, and developmental delay. i have wait for so long for help (4years) and i am still on waiting lists. but yesterday he almost killed me and his 3 year old sister, by through things at my head while driving on the highway this went on for two hours along with screaming. Now i will admit i lost it my tempare and patiences, especially when he is jepordizing our lives.
It looks like the Risperdal could be the reason for the motor tics. Which would make more sense then the Concerta being the problem. And Risperdal could be the reason for the weight gain too. Risperdal is such an interesting drug and being used for a wide range of things now. It's an atypical anti psychotic originally used for schizophrenia. It was a game changer for that disorder. While risperdal is used off label for things like autism and a lot of people that have autism (anywhere on the spectrum) often have overlapping adhd as a secondary diagnosis, this doesn't mean that the syptoms of adhd will improve with risperdal.
Seroquel and Risperdal are both anti psychotic meds usually used for disorders such as Schizoprenia and Bipolar. Some anti psychotic meds are used to treat tourettes, but I have not personally read or heard the two previously mentioned meds being the first used to treat tourettes. I know of haldol being used. Ritalin is very popular for ADD/ADHD. Celexa is an SSRI which is used for depression and can also be used to treat OCD.
Wellbutrin is the least likely out of the anti-depressents to be likely to cause mania but it still can happen. With the SSRI's its far more common. It would be very rare for Risperdal to cause mania as generally it has a full mood stablization effect (in addition to an antipsychotic effect) so if that is the only medication you are taking it might be an adverse reaction. You could look up the medication website and discuss that with your psychiatrist.
Recently I was asked to help a young man who had been taking Risperdal for a psychotic illness and who noticed that while taking this his penis and testicles seemed to shrink. There is very little information in the literature about this. We know that Risperdal causes dopamine receptor blockade. Dopamine in turn keeps prolactin levels in check. Therefore Risperdal allows for a raise in prolactin levels and this may cause genital shrinkage.
My oldest son is on Risperdal,as well as three other meds. He has done quite well with Allegra for seasonal allergies, and even better with Zyrtec. Zyrtec is OTC but allegra is not. Both are well tolerated with Risperdal. Benaadryl is not good with Risperdal. My son, age 17, is zonked out when he takes both. He basically is out like a light and doesn't wake up in the morning (until about 12 hours later) the few times he has taken it. Not good at all.
The boys definitely need to go back to the prescribing doctor and get the proper treatment. Maybe for the 9 yr old, the meds may have to be changed and for the 6 yr old, he has to be looked at and he may need to be diagnosed but that' s for the doctor to decide. If you can talk to the mother to take these boys in and you could go with her for extra support, this would help a great deal. Tell mom to start keeping a diary of actions of each boy, how much they act out and stuff.
