Risperdal for agitation

Common Questions and Answers about Risperdal for agitation

risperdal

Avatar n tn It looks like the Risperdal could be the reason for the motor tics. Which would make more sense then the Concerta being the problem. And Risperdal could be the reason for the weight gain too. Here is a link to the info I was looking at on Risperdal - http://www.crazymeds.us/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Meds/Risperdal By the way, don't suddenly stop the Risperdal. You must sloooowly come off of it. Good luck!
Avatar f tn It is interesting that they started him on Risperdal instead of a stimulant med. Risperdal is a great med for bipolar - especially dysphoric manias and/or mixed states instead of euphoric manias. So I am guessing that early on they might have been having trouble figuring out if he had Bipolar or ADHD? At any rate, that is a tough combination for a child to have - and perhaps even harder on the parent. The problem is that both areas need to be treated.
Avatar n tn Hello, My father who is 80 years of age suffers from Alzheimer's and has been in a nursing home for 5 years. He has been on a "low" does of Risperdal for the same period of time. His caregivers claim that it is for his own safety and theirs as he becomes agitated periodically. They have not described to me in any detail how this agitation manifests itself.
Avatar m tn I'm prescribed Zyprexa in the "Zydis" rapid-dissolve form, 5mg, as needed "for agitation". I'm bi-polar, and sometimes I get worked up to a state that is more frustrated & agitated than it is manic, per se, The Zyprexa works well for this, except for its notorious weight-gain side effects. I just can't handle the weight issues.
Avatar f tn My DS was prescribed this to help him sleep and to help him with his aggression and tantrums. I am concerned because he is not even three yet and it has not been approved for use (by the FDA) in children under five. He was only prescribed .25 mg, but I am jut not sure if it is normal to start meds this early? Also, if anyone has a child on it how long did it take before you noticed a difference in behaviors?
Avatar m tn The only thing I can think of that might have caused this was Seroquel. He took it at bed time for about two years. I am wondering if this is a plausible cause. He was also on Risperdal and Depakote and Trileptal and Terazadone and Lamictal, of course not all at the same time. I am sure I spelled all these meds wrong. We are having trouble finding any professional who will take an active interest in the urgency of our problem with both the aggression and the onset of these tic behaviors.
Avatar f tn I took Prozac for many years and really good success, really worked great for me and after several years it lost it's effect on me. Sometimes it it a matter of increasing your present meds. Best of luck to you.
969163 tn?1281105479 I take an antiphycotic medication for my anger; Risperdal. However, unless your dad recongnizes his abrupt anger is an issue he will not mention it to his doctor. I can't advise you on how to approach your Dad about speaking with his doctor but it is causing problems in the family.
Avatar n tn We are very new to this, but my question is my loved one has been on Depakote and Risperdal for 8 days now and the mood stabilizer seems to be working great, completely stable in moods but still in the hospital. My concern is that the delusions are still there and even getting worse. Could it be the confinement or is there another medication to address this. What is the Risperdal supposed to address. Are there medications available to address the delusions?
Avatar n tn my 4 year old with autism was on risperdal, he had some levels run high so his dr decided to switch him to Tenex...he took his last risperdal 1mg tablet 3 times/day on friday night 11-12-10...he started the tenex 1/2 of a 1mg tablet twice/day saturday morning. since sunday he has been very irritable and aggressive, with very frequent outburst of screaming constantly, hitting himself in the head and bitting, pinching, hitting, kicking, pushing, and scratching himself and others...

Avatar f tn Hi I clicked by forum lol don't know what I'm supposed to do. I am taking Seroquel XR for the thoughts, anger and agitation..it does work for me but I've had my dose increased to 400mh and I am putting weight on now.. I have been on it 9 months and not put much on up to that. I also take depakote as a stabiliser but I'm still having lots of mixed symptoms.
Avatar m tn My son just recently started taking risperdal. I am discovering that good help is very difficult to find. He is currently taking 1.5 mg a day. Last night he could not sleep at all and was afraid because he said the medication made him feel tired but his thoughts are still racing and he can't sleep. Is this something I should inform his doctor about or should I wait for his next week appointment.
Avatar n tn My father ( 80yrs with Alzheimer's/mild Parkinson's symptoms) has been a relatively "low" does of the risperdal for some time now. The nursing staff claim that it keeps him from being agitated. It however, leaves him in a catatonic state. He cannot speak and he sits and nods off with his pupils like pinholes. They claim this is for his "safety" and that of the nursing staff.
Avatar f tn Could you add a symptom to it? "Agitation" I know it's vague, but it's different from anxiety and I don't have a way to indicate it...
Avatar m tn Risperdal is such an interesting drug and being used for a wide range of things now. It's an atypical anti psychotic originally used for schizophrenia. It was a game changer for that disorder. While risperdal is used off label for things like autism and a lot of people that have autism (anywhere on the spectrum) often have overlapping adhd as a secondary diagnosis, this doesn't mean that the syptoms of adhd will improve with risperdal.
1255530 tn?1269867619 anyhow any suggestions on what worked for anyone else after having bad side effects. I need something for mania, insomnia panic and anxiety attacks. Avatar f tn I was on Zyprexa and the sister drug Risperdal.... Loved how it took me off the edge...HATED the weight gain.... Abilify was suggested years ago- For me, abilify worked well enough on its own- I am a rapid cycler Biploar II. At one point I was on 14 different medications..... in the end Abilify was my "balance" I was able to experience moods, but not in the extreme measures that I was... Personally, I liked abilify- i had that and PRN of seroqoel.
Avatar m tn Wellbutrin is the least likely out of the anti-depressents to be likely to cause mania but it still can happen. With the SSRI's its far more common. It would be very rare for Risperdal to cause mania as generally it has a full mood stablization effect (in addition to an antipsychotic effect) so if that is the only medication you are taking it might be an adverse reaction. You could look up the medication website and discuss that with your psychiatrist.
Avatar m tn Recently I was asked to help a young man who had been taking Risperdal for a psychotic illness and who noticed that while taking this his penis and testicles seemed to shrink. There is very little information in the literature about this. We know that Risperdal causes dopamine receptor blockade. Dopamine in turn keeps prolactin levels in check. Therefore Risperdal allows for a raise in prolactin levels and this may cause genital shrinkage.
Avatar n tn My oldest son is on Risperdal,as well as three other meds. He has done quite well with Allegra for seasonal allergies, and even better with Zyrtec. Zyrtec is OTC but allegra is not. Both are well tolerated with Risperdal. Benaadryl is not good with Risperdal. My son, age 17, is zonked out when he takes both. He basically is out like a light and doesn't wake up in the morning (until about 12 hours later) the few times he has taken it. Not good at all.
1516809 tn?1345082764 Risperdal is a blacklisted drug and use in the elderly is contraindicated. Several years ago the geriatrics department of Johns Hopkins conducted a special seminar at Mount Sinai geriatrics center in New York specifically warning physicians of the dangers of respirdal and the inappropriateness of administration in the elderly. There are physicians who disagree with this conclusion and continue to prescribe the medication.
Avatar f tn I was on risperdal as well and still take it for agitation if i find myself getting out of control (with the doctors permission of course) it usually does knock me off my feet. I think of it as re-booting my system. i was on lamectal as well and it didn't seem to make me so tired.. abilify was always my favorite though (as if taking a medicine and calling it a favorite is a good thing haha) but i felt like it gave me an energy boost and made me not so monotone.
Avatar f tn I was Risperdal for about 15yrs. I had granulomas all over ( they look like large ring worm spots) and I developed prediabetes which is why I stopped it.
Avatar m tn I had very very very good luck with Risperdal combined with Zoloft. I was able to even come off both for 6 years without issue. That is something you need to discuss with your pdoc though and work on tapering under the pdoc's care. Anyway, I found that Risperdal was a game changer and 99.9% of my fears subsided. Best of luck!!!
