1142551 tn?1264736930 BTW he is DX with PDD-NOS. I would just like some insight on what has worked for others, the drug risperdal, and if there are any other medication options.
16638194 tn?1449934941 I am in desperate need of some insight regarding medication for Autism and ADHD. My son is 7 years old. He started out on Risperdal when he was 4 but we quickly took him off because he quickly ballooned by 15 lbs. in 1 month. We eventually ended up on Abilify and Tenex (Guanfacine) and he's been taking that combination for about 3 years. Now we are at the point where those two meds were not working at all and we were already at the approved dosage limits.
Avatar m tn It was a game changer for that disorder. While risperdal is used off label for things like autism and a lot of people that have autism (anywhere on the spectrum) often have overlapping adhd as a secondary diagnosis, this doesn't mean that the syptoms of adhd will improve with risperdal. Risperdal seems to help with aggressive behavior and behavior problems in general and likely communication. with kids on the spectrum. It seems to help with irritability and aggressiveness.
Avatar n tn This question is in regard to a pre-adolescent boy with autism. The Risperdal no longer controls his behaviors; he is laughing hysterically all the time, running, is violent and teachers are afraid of him. He is non-verbal and is a large boy for his age of 9 years and is entering puberty. The medicine does apparently help him sleep, but that is the only benefit we are now seeing. Avatar n tn I am writing for answers for my 15 Year old son with Autism. He has been on Risperdal for about 5 years now and was taking 4mg x 2 daily, HIGH, I KNOW. He is 5'10" 165 lbs. For about the past 6 months he has started with some new behaviors. I relayed these to his Psychiatrist and she has had no comment on them. I researched them myself and found they mimic Tardive dyskinesia in many ways. I have found a new Psychiatrist but can not get in to see her for approx 2 more weeks.
5757880 tn?1395578022 These are all very potent antipsychotic medications. You can look two of them up here : http://www.crazymeds.us/pmwiki/Meds/Risperdal http://www.crazymeds.us/pmwiki/Meds/Latuda google for fanapt I happen to like the above website because it gives the info to you in pretty straight, understandable talk. Ignore their ads. You never really mentioned what your sons symptoms were other then the ADHD. He must have some very strong co-disorders.
1572541 tn?1310208423 for my 5 yr old son who was dx with autism. For 3 years his aggression worsen and he developed tics and gained a tremendous amount of weight which started raising his BP among other things. The dr. decided to wing him off and he ended up developing tardive dyskinsea. That will always be a haunting day I will never forget watching my son suffer from this with the chorea movements. His autism regressed so bad I had to teach him to feed himself again.
1516809 tn?1345082764 Risperdal is a blacklisted drug and use in the elderly is contraindicated. Several years ago the geriatrics department of Johns Hopkins conducted a special seminar at Mount Sinai geriatrics center in New York specifically warning physicians of the dangers of respirdal and the inappropriateness of administration in the elderly. There are physicians who disagree with this conclusion and continue to prescribe the medication.
Avatar n tn -- your words You need to see your doctor again. I wonder about the Risperdal - I believe it is not approved for children under 10 in the U.S. (unless, you are living in another country, then it could be approved there, but I doubt it). ODD is a very serious diagnosis and could be a preceder to bi-polar or other mood/personality disorders (is there a history of severe mental health issues on either side of the family?).
Avatar f tn I was recently taking off Risperdal I tapered like every other day for 3 days,is this enough taper would i have withdrawal,i know in the past they have just stopped me off it,,is it a drug that needs taperred,,i was on 1/2 mg since sept 13 08
Avatar f tn What specialmom said is correct, the prescribing physicians are the ones who can best answer these questions. I would call them as soon as you can to get these answers. Have you ever considered getting a autism/seizure dog for your child? My daughter who has ASD has a service dog and he has made a huge difference in her life. Not only would the dog help prevent the self-harming behavior, but he/she could alert you when a seizure was happening.
Avatar m tn I been taking risperdal for 6 days at 0.5mg per day I suddenly stop takin it for 3 days I had no effert Docter said to me today I don't have to take it !! Is that safe to come off it 0.
Avatar n tn She took Risperdal for just over two years and went off of it in early March, 2009 (due to sedating side effects). She has taken 25 mg daily of Strattera for a year and a half, and still takes it. Since she went off the Risperdal, her weight has dropped steadily (from 54 lbs to 51 lbs). Her "stimming" consists of running in short little bursts, so she's constantly expending energy. Incidentally, despite all of her movement, she has very low muscle tone.
Avatar f tn My DS was prescribed this to help him sleep and to help him with his aggression and tantrums. I am concerned because he is not even three yet and it has not been approved for use (by the FDA) in children under five. He was only prescribed .25 mg, but I am jut not sure if it is normal to start meds this early? Also, if anyone has a child on it how long did it take before you noticed a difference in behaviors?
674607 tn?1240017232 Effexor (low dosage), Lithium (low--600 mg), Wellbutrin (300 mg), Risperdal (low), Clonazepam (low), Dexedrine 10 mg when needed. Do you think any meds on this list can cause high blood pressure?
Avatar n tn my son was treated for an acute anxiety attack in his university ER with risperdal 4 days ago. he has not been the same ever since. he has had all of the classic signs of toxicity from this drug. he was treated in our local ER (2 days later) with benedryl and adavan and he seemed fine following the treatment. but the dystonic reactions, disorganized thinking, anxiety, all symptoms continue.
Avatar f tn I did not know my son was autistic at the time I was pregnant with my twins but my mother in law was very involved and very helpful. She always reminded him that he was going to be a big brother and tried to get him all hyped up. She bought him things like cards that said "im goig to be a big brother" and t-shirts, some others i dont remember. We also tried to get him excited to help out and do all he can. When the twins were born he helped with feedings, changings, holding them, etc..
Avatar n tn We are very new to this, but my question is my loved one has been on Depakote and Risperdal for 8 days now and the mood stabilizer seems to be working great, completely stable in moods but still in the hospital. My concern is that the delusions are still there and even getting worse. Could it be the confinement or is there another medication to address this. What is the Risperdal supposed to address. Are there medications available to address the delusions?
4509053 tn?1355665640 He is doing well on Intunviv (4mg) during the day and was doing well on Risperdal (.5mg) for mood regulation, but it was causing wetting his pants during the day. Now that he is on a reduced dosage, his outbursts, tantrums, impulsivity, and tics (right now, picking his nose) are worse, and his wetting hasn't improved all that much. Are there any alternatives that could address the same issues, equally well, without the wetting side-effect?
Avatar n tn I must disagree with the other poster. Risperdal was approved by the FDA for use in children on the spectrum in 2006 to treat *repeated* bouts of aggression and irritability as are other anti-psychotics. My son was diagnosed with Asperger's when he was 3 and has been taking Risperidone (Risperdal) for 4 years in varying dosages. Without it he could not have attended mainstream schooling as his aggressive outbursts were a danger to himself, other children and adults.
Avatar f tn My 10 year old daughter is suffering from PTSD, the Psychiatrist that she is seeing has her on 4 different medicines. These medicines are Prozac 20mg, Kapvay .2mg, Risperdal .5mg, and Imipramine. My question is first is this safe to mix and second what side effects could this mixture cause?
Avatar m tn The only thing I can think of that might have caused this was Seroquel. He took it at bed time for about two years. I am wondering if this is a plausible cause. He was also on Risperdal and Depakote and Trileptal and Terazadone and Lamictal, of course not all at the same time. I am sure I spelled all these meds wrong. We are having trouble finding any professional who will take an active interest in the urgency of our problem with both the aggression and the onset of these tic behaviors.
1648124 tn?1301360623 So, my three and a half year old son has been having major issues since before 18months. He has been on Tenex which is showing no effect it did work well for the first few weeks but he is back to his previous behaviors. It never did help with agression or impulsivity but it did slow him down and he was not doing his high pitched screaming that he normal does.
