Risperdal and geodon

Common Questions and Answers about Risperdal and geodon

risperdal

Avatar n tn I am bipolar 2 with PTSD. I was on Geodon, risperdal and lithium. The geodon was added last, and the risperdal was weaning down. I took it when it was new. For a few months, I did okay with it and didn't really have any problems. It was stopped because it eventually caused perceptual,,, especially visual, disturbances all of a sudden, and I ended up misjudging the freeway and drove my car over the embankment.
Avatar n tn I began taking atypical antipsychotics just over a year ago, and stopped just over a month ago. I have been on Risperdal, Abilify, Seroquel, Zyprexa, and Geodon, in that order. Risperdal caused me to have a grand mal seizure. I was only on it for a month or so, and I was taking a fairly low dose (I don't remember precisely how much). Neither Abilify and Seroquel lasted long because of unpleasant side effects (nausea and twitching/akathesia).
735919 tn?1236444549 thank you for the info on Lamictal, but does anyone take Geodon? I take 40mg Geodon and Lamictal. I do feel so much better, but i was wondering more about the Geodon side effects. I feel alittle more anixous im wondering if it is the Geodon.
Avatar m tn We weaned off the risperdal and I started geodon about 10 days ago, real low dose 20mg. I was okay for a bit,,,of course I'd been okay while I was off everything too until I wasn't. (Kind of like it always rains after a dry spell, being okay till you weren't anymore) So anyway I started the geodon. A few days into it, my wife asked me if I was okay. I was a little talky,,not sleeping much yada yada. Then today I got depressed and was hiding from everyone in my closet.
2010625 tn?1329372056 I think I might be getting manic again. I just switched from risperdal to geodon. I am on the lowest dose of geodon, but I am worried about taking more because it gave me body aches, and I had to start taking cogentin again, and if I take more of the geodon it might increase my chances of getting more yucky side effects. I feel like I am stuck between a rock and a hard place, lol.
642393 tn?1227032656 I've taken Abilify for yrs & love it. I have none of the side effects I had on other drugs. Try it!
Avatar m tn I have taken Geodon before and it did not make me sedated, not sleepy at all. Everyone responds differently to meds though. If your dr says you can take it at night, that sounds like a good plan. Maybe you will be able to tell how sleepy you get and if you feel groggy in the morning, in which case taking it at night would be best.
Avatar f tn i stopped taking risperdal a week ago and i feel lousy. can anyone relate ? im still on lithium.
Avatar f tn Oh yeah I thought I should also add I got really out of control during cold turkey withdrawal behaviorally from Geodon and my voices in my head from before started telling me I should be dead which they never told me things like that before ever among other psychotic things but this of course is really hard on the brain and it didn't happen again when I tapered off proper.
Avatar f tn The swelling of my joints and feet was why pdoc took me off cold turkey and put me on geodon but the taking off swiftly or the beginning of geodon made me violently ill, every forty five minutes. K why talk about it, I figure if I can take it maybe you can....hopefully as well. I have a little swelling but head is really clear and not manic....yet....New one..yes old but new to me....Risperdal 1mg @ bed and he will increase it next visit just getting me level as possible first.
Avatar f tn Saw pdoc Friday and started geodon 20mg x 2 a day, total 40mg. I had a splitting headache last night. Today have been off, stomach queezy, two times the headache came up and I took acetamiaphine. Now at bedtime I am ready to get sick to my stomach and feel awful. Does it react this fast or am I starting the flu? Anyone experience this, this fast?
Avatar f tn I take it for psychosis as it is an antipsychotic and also an antidepressant. It has worked better than Geodon for my negative symptoms but risperdal seemed like it was going to work even better for this but unfortunately I could not handle it. Geodon treated my psychotic symptoms better however. It doesn't work as good as I'd like it to but it's better than nothing. I could not tell you how it works for depression as I am not depressed.
2010625 tn?1329372056 I taken all the above and had to quit them for weird side effects. I now take Abilify and it has changed my world. I am doing better than I ever have. It was harsh to start though. It made my stomach so sore for a couple of months. Really bad. But it does great things for my brain. I know every body is different - this is just my story. If it were me I would replace rather than add. Keeping the risperadol on board will continue the girly issues.
1255530 tn?1269867619 I did better on Risperdal and Seroquel (which do have more of a mood stabilization property, Zyprexa is noted for this as well but for myself it caused extreme weight gain and sedation, Abilify is less likely to cause weight gain and sedation of course). All this you would have to discuss with your psychiatrist.
440120 tn?1211724496 The atypical antipsychotics (Risperdal through Abilify, Fanapt and Saphris) have a safer side effect profile than the typicals (Thorazine through Haldol) in that they have half the statistical potential of causing tardive dyskinesia (a long term side effect which is a movement disorder of all current antipsychotics except for Clozaril). They also have far more of a mood stabilization effect and have been specifically FDA approved for this purpose.
202665 tn?1248806733 Geodon can cause side effects such as you mentioned and I could not tolerate it either. Abilify can be activating for some people. That's not uncommon. The two newest antipsychotics that I believe were approved as mood stabilizers are Fanapt and Saphris but I have never tried those so I am not personally familiar with their side effect profile.
969163 tn?1281105479 Geodon like all antipsychotics (except for Clozaril) can cause movement disorders both temporary and permanent and although temporary movement disorders can (and should be) treated with a side effect pill if they are not the psychomotor agitation and spasmic activity they cause can be quite painful. Speak to his psychiatrist (or have someone else do so) about potential causes of this and this is one cause they generally would look into.
Avatar n tn When I was changed from Seroquel to Risperdal I had some standard flu like withdrawal symptoms. Basically I felt run down and lousy and had some aches and pains and had to sleep a lot for a couple of days but it was nothing dangerous and it went away. Don't know if that was specific to that antipsychotic change over or would happen with others. Ask your psychiatrist for more specific information.
Avatar m tn I have taken Geodon, Haldol, Saphris, Risperdal, Seroquel, and Fanapt in just a year and a few months. Also just knowing that Fanapt can cause Tardive Dyskinesia scares me and would have me constantly paranoid if it is going to start. I wanna know if it is a good decision to take this drug until my numbness completely subsides and then stop it. I will bring all of this to the attention of my psychiatrist, but i just wanted to know what you think. Thank you.
518117 tn?1429276273 And if he does need an antipsychotic, the atypical antipsychotics, from Risperdal onwards and less likely to have the severe effects of Haldol. Most likely they just stabilized him and released him and a follow up visit with the psychiatrist to adjust and fine tune things should improve things.
Avatar f tn I waz on and i had a reaction to it its got an ingredient in it and caused me to lactate not bein pregnant and zyprexa i gained alot of weight like 20lb in a month
Avatar m tn It is rare although not unknown that it can cause any form of heart arrythmia (this can happen with all the atypicals) but if you mean lowering blood pressure that is different and that can happen with all antipsychotics and is generally of less concern. Orthostatic hypertension (having difficulty when suddenly standing) can happen with all antipsychotics for example. Having lowered blood pressure when sitting is more of a concern but it depends on the degree of blood pressure drop.
Avatar m tn I was somewhat manic when I was on Risperdal but it most likely was an interaction with Lamictal which at higher doses can cause mania and I was on a fairly large dose at the time.
Avatar f tn t had mania in awhile, but the depression just lingers on and on. I currently take Lamictal 400 mg, Risperdal 1 mg, daily. He tried me on Abilify and that was a nightmare - made me feel "crazy". Also have tried Geodon - not good on that one either. I miss being happy - even if it was induced by mania. I have so much to be happy about, but I'm just never happy. I have extreme anxiety and every day is exhausting.
Avatar f tn It's hard telling but I was put on Geodon and then Risperdal and finally Abilify and I have a history of alcohol abuse and you're not supposed to drink while on any of those and I never did anything like that but those are different medications and I am a different person altogether. I would say if he doesn't normally do this ever while intoxicated something is out of whack there but some people have a tendency to eventually turn violent no matter what while being drunk.
Avatar f tn m at my last resort after being on Depakote, Lamictal, Geodon, and Cymbalta. If anyone has had any experience with either of these drugs, I'd like to know what you thought of them.
Avatar m tn There is a big difference between temporary movement disorders such as akathesia and dystonia which can be treated with a side effect pill and tardive dyskinesia and its variants. If you are concerned speak to your psychiatrist and have them do a movement disorders test which most psychiatrists do from time to time anyway. They could tell you for sure but there is a big difference between the two and what they look like but a psychiatrist would know for sure.
Avatar m tn I took Risp. for about 3 months and at only 1mg per day but it was a horrid drug for me. Dullness, bad sleep, boobs leaked, headaches and dyskinesia that has not gone away. I stopped mine abruptly and switched back to Seroquel (which I wish I didn't take) and I noticed the anxiety got alittle worse and lasted about 2 weeks and that was from only 1mg!
Avatar f tn I was on Zyprexa and the sister drug Risperdal.... Loved how it took me off the edge...HATED the weight gain.... Abilify was suggested years ago- For me, abilify worked well enough on its own- I am a rapid cycler Biploar II. At one point I was on 14 different medications..... in the end Abilify was my "balance" I was able to experience moods, but not in the extreme measures that I was... Personally, I liked abilify- i had that and PRN of seroqoel.
