Common Questions and Answers about Risperdal and dystonia

risperdal

Avatar m tn There is a big difference between temporary movement disorders such as akathesia and dystonia which can be treated with a side effect pill and tardive dyskinesia and its variants. If you are concerned speak to your psychiatrist and have them do a movement disorders test which most psychiatrists do from time to time anyway. They could tell you for sure but there is a big difference between the two and what they look like but a psychiatrist would know for sure.
Avatar m tn They can cause motor restlessness such as dystonia and akathesia and of course the long term effect tardive dyskinesia. It can cause effects that appear to be psychiatric at times. If its akathesia or extra pyramidal side effects then your psychiatrist could titrate the anti-psychotics and add a side effect pill to control it.
Avatar n tn 4 Months after her last dose she got pancreatis and Bells Palsy and now her jaw moves back and forth under stress. Is Bells palsy linked to tardive dyskinesia? I read in the Facial Nerve Book that it is.
Avatar m tn Early last year in march, i was given 2 risperidon injections which gave me acute dystonia, and decided to stop taking the medication alltogether. Then june came, wen it was very cold here, i started feeling the same side effects of risperidon for a week or so before they stopped. From there i stayed six months without any side effects or withdrawal.
559509 tn?1216180446 I show mixed tendencies ( is that type 1 ),and my Dr gave me Risperdal for what appeard to be a manic state( I was off all meds at the time except Welbutrin which may have excaserbated my mania). My manic states don't last that long and it confuses me cause I am in somewhat of denial about my diagnosis of Bipolar Disorder which i've had for three years now. I get intense anger and irratability for no reason other than I get pissed off eaily.
Avatar f tn Linguofacial Dyskinesia, Oral-facial Dyskinesia, TD, Tardive Dystonia and Tardive Oral Dyskinesia. Have you been on any of these medications? If yes, then any one of them could be the cause of tardive dyskinesia. I suggest you consult your neurogist to change the medication Refer: http://www.schmidtandclark.
Avatar n tn By age 5 he was diagnosed with Akathisia and Tardive Dyskinesia, He also has Torticollis and Dystonias. He was removed from Risperdal and Clonedine and now is currently only on Keppra for seizures. My question is this: He is now 10 years old and still suffering with the effects of Tardive and most recently developed complex tics. These tics are violent in nature and he cannot sit stand or walk when he has episodes of them.
Avatar f tn The first doctor I consulted told me it was Dystonia and would most likely be progressive and get worse. After reading about dystonia I heard that it can be secondary to MS and some other neurological disorders, so I rang my neuro as I don't have a MS diagnosis but there was a big question mark as to if I might have MS.
Avatar n tn I would like to know what would be a good allergy medicine that can be taken with risperdal. I have given my son benadryal in the past and he would become calm but since the risperdal he gets very hyper and stays up all night. My son has seasonal allergies. I have given him claritin and it does not work. Thank you for any advice you can give.
Avatar f tn I to have cervical dystonia and now have problem with my balance and hand coordination. I have had numerous test and still no one can tell me what is going on. I do take botox injections for my neck but it doesn't help anything else going on.
Avatar f tn The child did not have any signs of tics or movement in any part of the body or face before taking Concerta and Risperdal. The child was on concerta for two years and Rispirdal for just over a year. I thank you for any help you can offer. Ellie. Avatar f tn It will take a few months to build up to a full dose of Lamictal and if you have angry outbursts that get physical your psychiatrist might want you to take Risperdal and then as the Lamictal builds up to a full dose see if you can do without it so that you have full stability in the meantime as Risperdal unlike Lamictal works right away. Risperdal of course has a good mood stabilization effect. They can coordinate about this as well.
Avatar n tn Well it depends. Risperdal is an antipsychotic and it is effective in treating psychosis. Asperger's is a developmental disability and thus doesn't specifically respond to antipsychotics. What is the Risperdal specifically being used for? Also there is a community specifically for Asperger's.
Avatar n tn I was taking risperdal for 6 month (4MG) and stopped "cold turkey" as the doctor suggested. now for 2 month i am having insomnia. can not sleep more then 3 hours per night. What can i do and how long should it take to get my normal sleep? how long the insomnia last?
Avatar n tn He is 10 and on Concerta 54 mg (for last almost 3 years) and Zoloft 100 mg and Intuniv 2 mg and recently Risperdal 0.25 mg every am and 0.5 mg q pm. The neurologist wanted to add another med Abilify on board as he was still having some outburst behavior. I find this troubling that he wants my child on 5 psychoactive meds. we sought a second opinion from a psychiatrist that our son's therapist recommended.
Avatar m tn She is 39 years old. I have been trying to be hard-nosed and told her that she can't live with me anymore if she keeps on doing drugs. So, she left, and she went completely off the risperdal for about 3 days now. And, as I figured, she is currently in the hospital because of an episode. The people that she decided to "hang with" are enablers so they let her go cold turkey on the risperdal even though I told them that she could get psychotic if she does.
4349548 tn?1357812446 A quick look at the literature tells me that 3.5-17% of people with MS have dystonia - that's a wide range but it is still recognized as a symptom. If you have internet access while you are there in the hospital you might google 'multiple sclerosis and dystonia' and spend some time reading what's out there - Sorry, I can't give you specific links because much of it is on websites that offer similar forums to this one here at MH.
Avatar n tn Early onset dystonia is characerized by twisting of limbs like feet, hand, legs and arms. Genetic mutation is the most likely cause of early onset dystonia. It is not clear if the symptoms of dystonia worsen at the time of menstruation. Oral medications are mainstay of treatment of dystonias. Non drug therapies for dystonia include physical therapy, acquatic physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy. Hope this helps!
2176476 tn?1338605299 I am currently taking Risperdal, Lamictal, Lithium, and Lexapro. I was on Seroquel XR for quite sometime, but switched back to Risperdal because 1) it is a heck of a lot cheaper, and 2) it really worked well for me, even better than Seroquel. I believe in the fact that medications work quite differently for everyone. I personally have not had any issues with my current combination.
Avatar f tn Hi Udkas, My partner has dystonia in her neck (cervical). The neurologist says she has opposing muscles that contract and that's what causes hers. She takes Baclofen and some type of anti-inflammatory called, Meloxicam. They've also said that it gets worse, she could have Botox injections in those muscles that constantly cramp. However, we've read that the Botox may eventually deaden the muscle. The cramps that you have in your hand sound similar to what dystonia does.
Avatar f tn I have learned a lot about dystonia since my diagnosis, I know that when I get tired and or overly stressed any and all of my symptoms are worse. Does your son get Botox injections? If not. Why?? Botox has not only changed my life for the BETTER but I believe it saved my life. I was in misery and miserable to be around. Now I'm coping well 90 % of the time instead of thte other way around. Zanaflex is a true muscle relaxer.
Avatar f tn I have hypothyroidism (treated with Thyroid Erfa) and hyperparathyroidism (no treatment) and dysautonomia. I am taking atenolol and Multaq for my blood pressure and heart rhythm problems (atrial fibrillation in 2010). I have a mild oestrogen treatment (63 years old). One Doctor suspectes Multaq. Could it cause the neck symptoms? My dose is very low, 200 mg, whereas the normal dose is 2x400 mg.

789911 tn?1368636783 Have you considered creating a User Group? There are discussions about dystonia in the Neurology and Rare Diseases forums, but if you'd like to start your own group, you can find out how here: http://www.medhelp.org/health_pages/MedHelp/MedHelp---Groups/show/1021?cid=88 User groups are created, maintained and moderated by our users. You can choose to make this group public or private, and you can then invite the others to join you in this group.
Avatar n tn Did you have a scope check (forget the name) of the vocal cords while making noises? An ENT or SLP can perform this test. My daughter has vocal dysphonia (a type of dystonia). There are two types-abductor and adductor. She has both. Dystonia can cause your muscles to "pull"-they contract. I think if you haven't, see a neurologist. There are treatments, more suited for adults. like botox injections if you have something like dystonia. Best of luck.
