ribavirin generic

The pharmacist gave me a different brand of generic ribavirin and pointed that out. I may be wrong but I thought I read or heard that one should stick w/ the same generic brand. Anyone know?

Ribavirin is the generic name of the drug, and it's branded as Rebetol or Copegus by the makers of different interferons. It's identical stuff.

The Riba I recieved last time was in capsule form which read Generic for Ribavirin, this time I recieved capplets, and it did not read Generic, just wondering if this is not a Generic form of Riba, maybe because I was a relapser.

I treated 4 times before once with 3 shots a week of interferon monotherapy, once with interferon and ribavirin, once with interferon ribavirin and a clinical trial medicine, last year with sovaldi and olysio. I was a null responder to the interferon based treatment and relapsed after sovaldi and Olysio. Last year on Nov 18th I started treatment with Harvoni for 24 weeks and we later added ribavirin for 15 of those weeks. I finished treatment on May 4th.

A drug in a lower tier such as Tier 1 will cost you less than a drug in a higher tier. For example ribavirin is a generic drug and will be in the lower tiers whereas Sovaldi would be probably be in the top tier. So your co-payment would be higher for the Sovaldi. Copegus and Rebetol are the same, they are brand names for the generic drug ribavirin, either one will be fine.

I stated before that I was a responder to SOC treatment eight years ago with Pegasys and generic ribavirin but that is not entirely true. I was undetectable at 12 weeks and also at 48 weeks but at 24 weeks I had a VL of 212,000. I used 1200 mg of ribavirin all the way through and a single vial (1cc I think) of the Roche interferon per week the whole time and missed no doses. I was only tested these three times and six months post TX I was 16,400,000.

Pegasys is not a generic and as such would not be covered until you are out of the GAP. Ribavirin is generic but is an upper tier drug and has a HUGE co-pay. The new drugs will not even be included in Medicare Part D's formulary for 2011. This is the Medicare that I know and love..., not really when it comes to their drug coverage.

I'm on Gabapentin also (for depression... Gab's a generic Neurontin) in combo with Paxil. I never noticed itching increase when she added Gab, but was kind of 'out of it' and bipolar like at the time. I asked about the itching and the doc said it was from the treatment (Pegasys/Ribavirin) drying out my skin so much. Got some relief by using lotion (Aveno baby - no added colors or perfumes).

Personally, I have a co-pay of $90 every 90 days for the interferon and another one for the protease inhibitor. The ribavirin is available generic, so my co-pay on that was only $10 every 90 days. If you have insurance you should ask them, and otherwise I'd recommend googling interferon and then following a link to a manufacturer and looking at their assistance programs. If the treatment is still out of reach you can also look into getting into a drug trial.
