Restasis is the #2 most widely used prescription in the USA and most people are post menopausal females. Over 4-6 months it works to make a younger more effective tear and reduces inflammation on the surface of the eye.. My wife is on it and has had tremendously improvement as has several of her friends.

I had Lasik sugery about 4 years ago and had dry eye for a couple of years, but then that improved with the help of using Restasis. About a week ago I woke up with redness and mat in my left eye. My first thought was I had the pink eye. I went to my doctor and he gave me Tobramycin Ophthalmic Solution. That didn't help, so then he gave me Sulfacetamide Sodium Ophthalmic Solution.

m wondering about the side effects of Restasis as I have to use it for 6 months. I know it is an immunosuppressive drug and I really don't know what that means? Does that leave my body open for other diseases because it suppresses my system so the eyes can make the tear film that was partially lost when the nerves were cut during the cataract operations? I don't want to be dependent on drugs for the rest of my life.

Should I try plugs 1st and if not successful, then go back to Restasis? 3. In reading about Restasis, are there future bad side effects in continued use such as cancer? I am starting to question if I should get another opinion. Thank you for any suggestions that you may have.

Suggest you see oculoplastic surgeon who has experience in botox for blepharospasm. In the end it may be a combination of all 3 problems. Finally, look for dry eye side effects from medications as a potential culprit. Restasis can be a Godsend if used in the right cases for a year or so.

Usually at your age its associated with problems like rheumatoid arthritis or the like. Use the search feature and read about all the treatment for dry eys. Restasis is your best bet and it take about 4 months to start to work but often gets better and better for up to a year. Ask your Eye MD about "lacriserts" this is a 24 hour release pellet this is put between the lid and the eye. Often helps when all else fails.

My eye doctor just Rx'd Lotemax (4 weeks) & Restasis (for life) for my extremely dry eyes. They feel like sand is in them. I am concerned because from what I can understand Restasis works through the auto immune system. I am in week 38 of standard treatment and since week 16 of treatment have had a hypothyroid. I had been taking Restasis(Cyclosporin eye drops BID) and had many of the symptoms of side effects of that drug including low neutraphils, redness and swelling of eyelids, itching, feeling of foreign object in my eye, pain on administration of drops. While having a CT w/Infusion for swelling in my Parotid gland (salivary gland between ear & jaw on the face) an Ophthalmic Artery Aneurysm was found on the left side of my brain, it is 4mm. Went to a neurosurgeon for evaluation and he said that because of it's small size and the fact that it was not bubbling out (was smooth) we would not do surgery, but, would keep a close eye on it...CT angio's every six months.
