Avatar m tn There are still two nodules left in remaining thyroid bed. Do I let new specialist try to remove tissue or do iodine radiation therapy? I was told radiation will not take care of nodules only tissue. Do I want nodules removed before radiation?
Avatar n tn Hello, I have a surgery tomorrow for a a TT to remove my thyroid due to suspicion of thyroid cancer (papillary). Is this highly treatable and shoudl I be worried? I'm not worried about the surgery itself as the DR said its only about 1 hr. I'm worried that I have cancer and I might not have a long time to live. Is this the case? Please help. Nodule in left lobe about 4.5cm approx. Two biopsies compelted with foliccular neoplasa and latest biopsy suspicious of papillary cancer.
Avatar m tn Would get another opinion at an expert center to determine if the papillary thyroid cancer really needs I-131 or not. Sometimes it is difficult to remove the entire thyroid and if there is concern about cancer being left behind then at least one I-131 treatment may be neeeded.
Avatar n tn Yes, the radiation was external. Thanks for the heads up on how long we can expect to see Ct levels. It was not only informing but comforting. Thanks, also, for the time you spend answering medical questions for total strangers. . .it is a real service to those of us who are not able to go to the doctor's visits with our loved ones. Questions like prognosis are not exactly on the agenda when speaking to a cancer patient.
Avatar n tn Ahhhh gotcha! How long ago did they remove your thyroid? How come they didn't follow up with the radiation right away? Yes that is standard protocol from what others say here. I would get it done right away and then you can move forward. Better to be safe than sorry and do it now. :) Make sure you are diligent in getting your labs done and getting yourself regulated and feeling well.
Avatar n tn Hi, I beleive that they are not related. The thyroid and parathyroid are distinct organs, with distinct functions, though they are very close to eachother. However, they can be affected if the thyroid is surgically removed, or from radiation, i'd guess. But this would be hypo, not hyper. I understand that hyperparathyroid is usually caused by one of the 4 hyperparathyroid glands going 'bad'. Treatment for this would be to surgically remove the affected gland.
Avatar f tn He wants to remove the rest of the thyroid and do radiation basically as a precaution I guess. Of course I know it should be discussed w/ the pros and have gotten the opinions of 2 specialists, I just figured someone here may have had a similar experience and could lend some insight. I have ttried posting on the expert forum and evidently there are only a certain amount of posts allowed there per day and they had met their quota.
Avatar f tn Residual means remaining or left over. In other words your TT did not remove all of the thyroid tumour. Radioactive iodine is used to eliminate any residual thyroid or thyroid cancer cells.
Avatar f tn I had no issues with her. I had my right thyroid removed a year ago and now with this pregnancy its rough. My tsh levels are high and the doctors are haven problems getting it down. Next step is ultrasound on neck and possible surgery before baby is born and very scared. Has anyone had any problems with there thyroid during pregnancy?
Avatar n tn s thyroiditis. She had a thyroid ultrasound and a biopsy and they want to remove her thyroid due to possible cancer of the thyroid. I feel so dumb asking this, but just wondered if hiv positive people can have chemo and radiation. I know thyroid cancer is quite treatable and she has two children who need here. Any info. would be great.
Avatar f tn Sometimes if it is classical papillary carcinoma and it is a very small, encapsulated area they will only take one lobe. However, papillary carcinoma is notorious for microcancers - areas of cancer so small they can't be readily identified. I only had my right lobe removed. My papillary carcinoma was small (5mm) and encapsulated. There was no reason for them to take the rest out . . .
Avatar f tn He set me up for thyroid ultrasound ( i had recently had breast cancer in Jan; followed by 6 weeks radiation to area. I had asked radiologist for thyroid shield but he told me not necessary) (also past history of soft tissue sarcoma in 1987 and ovarian cancer low potential malignancy in 1991) Ultrasound showed some nodules, larger one of left of 3.5 cm. EENT dr. then did a FNB of nodule. Specimen material not sufficient but what was there looked benign. At dr.
Avatar f tn My sister is 28 years old and was just diagnosed with stage 1 Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma. What is the latest recommendation as far as treatment goes? It sounded like there were several options but it's hard to figure out what is best.. She had two tumors removed during the surgery, one was the size of a "XL egg" and that one was benine. The other one was about 1 cm and that was the one that was malignant. They said it was "stage 1 and contained".
750442 tn?1233285620 Have had parathroid surgery to remove a benign tumor and gland 4 years ago. Since age 15(now 48) thyroid is enlarged, labs show hyper, but I present with hypo symptoms. How common is this? Also, Dr. recommends radiation to destroy thyroid as opposed to surgery. I have also had 7 spine surgeries.Any thoughts greatly appreciated. Many thanks.
Avatar f tn If I were you, I would get a second opinion, have another biopsy, or maybe consider having the side of the thyroid with largest nodule taken out. Then you will know for sure.
Avatar f tn Please keep in mind that the only relationship between the thyroid and the parathyroids is their location in the body; you have 4 parahthyroids, and only one thyroid. I wonder if he saw all 3 of the other parathyroids? You could have developed another parathyroid issue since the surgery. Not everyone with hyperparathyroidism has abnormal calcium levels. Yes, by all means, you should pursue the issue; it may turn out to be nothing, but I'd sure want to make sure.
Avatar f tn My suggestion would be to take care of it right away before it does permanent damage like mine did. Radioactive Iodine will usually destroy the entire thyroid. With surgery, they can just remove the part that's a problem and look to make sure the rest is okay. It's up to you, of course, but if you're unsure, maybe you should get a second opinion from a different endo or surgeon.
Avatar n tn I had stage 3 invasive lobular carcinoma, two of 9 nodes involved and a 10 cm mass. Modified mastectomy down to chest muscle and part of that removed as well. I'd go through the chemo again in a heartbeat and the radiation too. I had an extreme allergic reaction to the taxotere so I only had that particular chemo once. ER & PR positive 90%, HER2 negative. Brac1 & Brac 2 negative. Horrific family history of breast, ovarian, colon and lung cancer. Chances of return?
Avatar m tn So I went to my dentist(he is one of the top 5 in my country) to discuss with him what to do about it(whether to let them grow or remove them). He told me we had to do a panoramic X-ray to see if they were growing straight or not. In his dental office he has a panoramic machine that he purchased in the last couple of years and he uses it for Panoramic X-rays(It's placed in the middle of his office and when in operation he just stands next to it not wearing any sort of protection.
Avatar m tn You do understand that once your thyroid has been destroyed by radiation, you will be hypo and dependent on replacement thyroid hormones for the rest of your life? You will never be "done" with this if your thyroid is irradiated. Have you been diagnosed with Graves'?
Avatar m tn He recommended i get the radiation. But I have a friend whos relative is a thyroid surgery and associate professor at a university. he told me he i didnt need the radiation. i also went to see an endo doc who told me he couldnt find any reason to give me radiation. he told me the only thing is i was male and they typically have a worse prognosis but he said everything else led him that i didnt need the radiation. So, I just cant make up my mind what to do.
Avatar f tn Hyperthyroidism is a dangerous disease and can lead to severe weight loss, hypertension, blindeness, kidney failure etc. The thyroid hormone is created with iodine so by giving the cat radioactive iodine, the radiation gets taken in by the thyroid gland and essentially destroys the benign tumour causing the problems. To answer your question specifically, I would say that it depends upon how well your cat has responded to the radiation.
Avatar n tn Just when I thought I was finished, the Dr. hit me with the possibility of radiation. Concern being micro. cells in the chest wall. Talk about bummed out! Now my concern is that I have expanders put in with only 200cc at this time. It has been four and a half weeks since my surgery. I was hoping to get back to my normal breast size which is a D cup. My question is, will the radiation stop the breast reconstuction process? Will the radiation affect the expanders?
Avatar f tn One of them only contained blood and the other one was inconclusive for them to tell me to remove my thyroid. Anyway I had another biopsy with them and they told me they were benign and I would just have to check them each year to make sure they didn't grow. Anyway, I didn't have another ultrasound done until this past month, because of another pregnancy and other issues I am dealing with.
Avatar f tn I was diagnosed with breast cancer, had a radical mastectomy in April, just finished consultations with the radiation and medical oncologists. The cancer is 4.5 cm, no lymph or vascular involvement, clear though close margins, grade 6-7, ER+ & HER2 3+; it's been around for 2 years with noticeable breast changes as indicated in mammogram in Jan. 2007. Radiologist who read the mammo concluded the changes were benign without follow-up. The radiation oncologist recommended no radiation.
