Common Questions and Answers about Recommended dosage of amoxicillin for gonorrhea

amoxil

Avatar f tn I just got done with a prescription for 875 mg of amoxicillin twice a day for 10 days. Will that cure chlamydia and gonorrhea??
Avatar n tn A child who takes 5 ml of the 250mg/5ml dose, for example, is receiving 250 mg of amoxicillin. The recommended pediatric dosage varies from 25 mg/kg per day to 45 mg/kg per day, depending on the underlying infection, according to Rx List. The suspension should be shaken well and measured with a marked measuring spoon to ensure that the right dose is given. Regular silverware should not be used to measure medication doses, warns Drugs.com.
Avatar n tn Amoxicillin is fine if it's the correct antibiotic. Dental infections can be from either an aerobic bacteria or anaerobic bacteria. Having the correct antibiotic is VERY important. I urge you to at least call your dentist for approval before you treat a dental abscess yourself. Amoxicillin may be fine, but you may need something like clindamycin instead. Also, it's very important that a FULL dose is taken for dental infections.
Avatar n tn As for gonorrhea, penicillins of any sort are no longer effective therapy for many strains of gonorrhea. The recommended therapy is another shot, this time with a drug called ceftriaxone. As you point out, the best course of action would be condoms till all of this is sorted out and your treatment is complete.

Avatar m tn Further, the medicine the he gave you, amoxicillin, has not been recommended for gonorrhea treatment for over 25 years. Currently recommended therapy for gonorrhea is a single injection of ceftriaxone. Your problem does not sound like an STI but again, I suggest you see another doctor. The fact that you have now taken several different antibiotics will make evaluation a bit more complicated but I still be4lieve you should be evaluated again.
Avatar m tn 0 gram dose of azithromycin will cure nearly all chlamydial infections and is the recommended therapy for NGU. For gonorrhea the 2.0 gram dose is recommended. The 2.0 gram dose is also the dose shown to be effective for syphilis. You describe taking 1500 mg (1.5 grams) over about 3 days. This dose would probably cure most chlamydial infection and NGU and some gonorrhea or syphilis but not all. Beyond that, there really no way to answer your question with complete confidence.
Avatar m tn You ask good questions, If you have gonorrhea, there certainly is a risk of you then transmitting it to a new partner. There is a risk of gonorrhea transmission for an infected male to an un-infected female is about 20-30% per episode of intercourse. If you have NGU the answer is less clear. NGU in men following receipt of oral sex is thought to arise from the introduction of oral (mouth) bacteria into the urethra during oral sex.
Avatar n tn Yeah along with a 7 to 10 day course of Doxy for Chlamydia.
Avatar n tn Unfortunately, amoxicillin is not recommended for any of these syndromes but could make their symptoms milder without curing the process. My advice would be to seek evaluation for NGU and gonorrhea at this time. If you were my patient, depending on the findings, I might then treat you with therapy for NGU (azithromycin or a week of doxycycline).
Avatar m tn I can understand that you do not have any medical services available to you but, unless you happen to a licensed medical persons, I suggest you play the waiting game until you are able to find medical assistance. Amoxicilin does treat for gonorrhea but the depends on the potency of measure prescribed to you to clear the deed. This is why I'm telling you only medical personnel should be advising you as to what medication you should be taking.
Avatar m tn Continue finishing your amoxicillin first. See a doctor after a week since the start of your amoxicillin to get other stds test. Amoxicillin might not be effective against gonorrhea anymore.
Avatar n tn As for the effect of your amoxicillin on your tests, you are correct, in some people amoxicillin will cure gonorrhea or make tests negative. If you had gonorrhea and the amoxicillin were having an effect however it would most likely not only make your test negative but cure your infection as well, hence if your tests are negative, I would not worry further about oral gonorrhea. Statistically, your sore throat is more likely to be a viral infection than anything else.
Avatar f tn I went to the doctor and they did a strep stept which came out negative he prescribed me amoxicillin 500 mg 2 pills 2 timess day for 10 days for tonsilitis. I am now freaking out thinking i have an std. Ive been taking the amoxicillin for 2 days and it has cleared my throat quite a bit. Do you think i should go get tested? Or should i wait and see if it clears up. I am married and have had sex with my husband 2 times since the encounter with the stranger.
Avatar m tn OK, and there is no way the 3 doses of 500mg amoxicillin spread out over 24 hours could have cured gonorrhea if I had it? So the test this week should be accurate that I never had it at all (if negative)?
Avatar n tn He advised against this but gave me a prescription of Azithromycin, with 500mg dosage twice a day for three days. In all my research online, I have read that the recommended dosage is 1g of Azithromycin taken once. Is the dosage I was prescribed as effective?
Avatar n tn t self-medicate with STDs is because only a test will determine what you really have, and some antibiotics work for some STDs and do nothing for others. 3g of amoxicillin combined with 1g of probenecid USED to be an effective treatment for gonorrhea, but not anymore. Many cases are resistant to this treatment, so other antibiotics are now used. We're talking about your bits-and-pieces, why risk permenant damage? Go get tested and treated properly. It is nothing to be ashamed of.
Avatar m tn gonorrhea does. Unfortunately, in most of the world, amoxicillin is not active against gonorrhea. If your urethral discharge and painful urination are clearing up, that's great. But if not definitely improved within 48 hr, you definitely need to find a provider to prescribe something more appropriate. Also, be aware that ciprofloxacin and related drugs (the quinolones) also are not active against gonorrhea in most of the world.
Avatar f tn thank doctor.....i was worrying that the course of amoxillin i was taking for tonsilitis would affect the accuracy of the chlamydia and gonorrhea urine test..... anyway i will drop my thought and keep my mouth shut.....
Avatar n tn I had unprotected oral sex with a CSW yesterday evening. I started on course of amoxicillin for my sinus problems from yesterday morning. If I had contracted gonorrhea or chlamydia from this woman , would the antibiotic help ?. I mean since the bacteria would be incubating now, wouldn't amoxicillin prevent the infection ?. I'm posting this out of paranoia. Any reply to my question would help in calming my irrational fears.
Avatar n tn My heart specialist has told me to take 4 x 500mg of Amoxicillin before dental work. I have just done this but I am not sure what I should take (if any) after the dental work. Any suggestions? My medication box says take the rest of the pack until finished but how much & when?
Avatar m tn I was diagnosed with gonorrhea and my doctor prescribed me azithromycin and also recommended that i have an hiv test and vdrl for syphilis. After my diagnosis I bought the medicine and took the initial two doses in one day as my doctor prescribed. The next day I went back to the hospital for both test and came back for the results the next day and they both came back negative. The tests were done 26 to 27 days from my last sexual contact.
