Avatar f tn My question is what is the difference between Bipolar disorder with psychotic features and Schizoaffective disorder? And which one sounds closest to what i am experiencing, if it's possible to answer?
1351968 tn?1278205300 One more thing, the two disorders can kind of be put together for one diagnosis. If the person has the symptoms of bipolar disorder but they have the disconects from reality of a person with schizophrenia then they can be diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder.
202665 tn?1248806733 Yes schizophrenia doesnt have any mood changes but there are a whole spectrum of conditions in between such as bipolar with psychotic features and schizoaffective disorder which involve both psychosis and mood changes. Sometimes certain concerns such as psychosis can increase over time become more apparent or are more in need of treatment. Bipolar with psychotic features is generally defined by psychotic thoughts or auditory or other hallucinations occuring only during mood swings..
Avatar f tn You say that schizoaffective disorder is "all the time". Does this mean even with medication? Mine lasted for about 3 months before being hospitalized, but no doctor ever told me had that. They always just said "bi-ploar". Maybe I should ask again for clarification. Afterall, I did need ECT's to "cure" it. Also, the TMS's say it is for depression. Does that mean only depression? Or can it be used for psychosis(or schizoaffective disorder), also?
Avatar n tn ve said on other posts but I know what the experience is like. But there are other forms of schizoaffective disorder that have depression instead of bipolar as the mood phase. And if you have suicidal urges you need to see a psychiatrist right away. Depression with psychotic features is when a person has psychotic thoughts only during mood fluctuations. With schizoaffective disorder psychotic thoughts or auditory hallucinations (hearing voices) can occur at any time.
1256303 tn?1291752568 I have schizoaffective disorder (with the bipolar aspect) and before my current recovery I had psychotic thoughts and delusions at all times (depending on my response to treatment as well of course). I do know that for schizoaffective disorder delusions and psychosis occur at all times whereas in bipolar with psychotic features they occur only during moodswings.
Avatar f tn Yes but all of these are treatable. I was able to recover from schizoaffective disorder with experimental treatment and now I live with severe tardive dyskinesia which is much harder to treat but I am finding treatment that has mitigated it. I think of myself as living with a disability. If its genetic it might be inherited but many people have recovered from bipolar or depression.
Avatar f tn If he was diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder then his diagnosis has been changed from bipolar disorder with psychotic features. The only real difference between these two is in schizoaffective disorder the psychosis happens all the time regardless of mood and in BP with psychotic features it happens with mood episodes. Anyway, he could be living in a fantasy world and truly believing all of this.
728480 tn?1312059930 t experience standard psychosis). For a person with borderline personality disorder, however, part of the cause of it is a traumatic childhood experience. And for ptsd, a person would not have acquired it otherwise but the traumatic experiences caused brain changes.
1052851 tn?1307741160 I was recently, after many, many years of being told I was just depressed, with Schizoaffective Disorder, I had never heard of this disease before, but the way it was explained to me, was that it is BiPolar 1 with a shot of Schizophrenia, this diagnosis hit right on. My GP and I have been working on various medications for this as well as my depression and some other physical issues I am having. I was taking 600mg of Quetiapine, along with 30mg of Cipralex daily for depression.
3579868 tn?1348739509 Bipolar nos is where they put you when you obviously show some symptoms of bipolar disorder but they do not know which classification to put you in. There is also schizoaffective disorder which can have some symptoms simmilar to bipolar disorder. I think it is actually on the schizophrenia spectrum but from my understanding it can be like a cross between bipolar and schizophrenia.
720657 tn?1233011567 There has been a controversy about whether schizoaffective disorder is a type of schizophrenia or a type of mood disorder. Today, most clinicians and researchers agree that it is primarily a form of schizophrenia. Although its exact prevalence is not clear, it may range from two to five in a thousand people (- i.e., 0.2% to 0.5%). Schizoaffective disorder may account for one-fourth or even one-third of all persons with schizophrenia.
Avatar f tn I discontinued risperidon two months ago. I have not had any psychotic symptoms. I believe my schizoaffective disorder is in remission. However can risperidon continue to have an effect two months after taking it? Anybody know? I took it for 4 years.
719785 tn?1232901518 As a person who has recovered from schizoaffective disorder with an experimental antipsychotic in Phase II FDA study (read through my posts if you wish) I can say in having exprienced thoughts like that before recovery that they sound psychotic to me. It should be noted that I have schizoaffective disorder and with the bipolar aspect of schizoaffective disorder when I was put on Anafranil which is similar to Prozac it made me psychotic. The same is true of bipolar.

Avatar m tn Hi Tammy, seroquel (quetiapine) is an atypical antipsychotic and is often prescribed for bipolar disorder to address psychotic symptoms and for it's mood stabilising properties mainly antimanic, although it also has some anti-depressant effects. It is also prescribed for other things such as schizophrenia, schizoaffective, GAD or severe insomnia (because of the sedation, and in smaller doses). It can be sedating at first, but usually this lessens as you get use to it.
Avatar m tn What is your exact diagnosis? Olanzapine is also known as Zyprexa which is an antipsychotic. Mitrapazine is Remeron which is an anti-depressent. I would doubt an antipsychotic would be given for anxiety. So although you are on two anti-anxiety agents (Etazolam and Xanax which is the brand name for Alprazolam) you have another diagnosis, I would assume and another set of issues to deal with.
1546631 tn?1321643204 ll start with our story, my 8yo little boy has current diagnoses of psychotic disorder NOS, mood disorder NOS, and ADHD, combined type. We are pending diagnoses of Schizoaffective disorder, Bipolar disorder with psychosis. It's been a rough road, and still is. His meds are constantly being changed, and we just had another hospitalization. I have hope for the future, and believe we can all find support here. What is your story?
Avatar m tn While I'm sure that people with Schizophrenia may experience some of the symptoms you described, that doesn't mean that you have Schizophrenia. Those symptoms can also be caused by Severe Depression. What is your age? It is very, and I mean VERY rare for anyone to develope Schizophrenia after the age of about 20. Depression and Schizophrenia are two very different illnesses.
Avatar f tn I guess it all depends on the severity of the psychotic break and other such factors. I like ILADVOCATE had symptoms since I was a small child and had my first full blown psychotic break about a year and a half ago or longer, I'm not sure I can't keep track of this crap like this. But after I had it I have never got back up to baseline yet since and I seem to relapse easily to varying extents.
Avatar n tn I could only take them for limited time, before having paranoid or delusional symptoms. Finally it came out that one of the potential side affects of antidepressants is psychotic symptoms; my psychiatrist at the time related that the episode was a direct result of the medication. Since then, two good mental health professionals also have confirmed it. Antidepressants can even precipitate a full blown manic or schizophrenic episode that lasts considerable duration past getting off the drug.
Avatar f tn Aspects of psychosis may also manifest during extreme episodes of depression. They are also present in schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder. These features include delusions (false ideas about what is taking place or who one is) and hallucinations (seeing or hearing things which aren't there). As you can see those suffering from Bipolar I are more likely to suffer a psychotic episode than someone diagnosised with Bipolar II disorder.
Avatar f tn I have a family member who has cyclothymia (mild bipolar) anxiety disorder and obsessive compulsive disorder. I have schizoaffective disorder which is schizophrenia with a mood disorder but was told by my psychiatrist the obsessive thoughts I had and still have to some extent were to mask psychotic thoughts. The best way I found to approach treatment was to underestand how it works and why its being prescribed.
Avatar f tn I have had only 1 mild paranoid event during mania that came years after my first recognized mania, so I obviously DO NOT understand psychotic features of BP at all. But my ex-husband has had many psychotic events. He has Bipolar Disorder w/ psychotic features. He has gone into psychosis many times, and is extremely paranoid. After reading the Bipolar Child I see that he has been bipolar his whole life, and has only been diagnosed 3 months ago.
723341 tn?1232338253 And I have schizoaffective disorder which may be a more extreme variant of bipolar with psychotic features (in schizoaffective disorder you are psychotic all the time, in bipolar with psychotic features its only during moodswings) from what I learned during testimony I conducted. People with bipolar usually have some mood episodes before the full onset. Its complex.
Avatar n tn Offhand these symptoms of paranoia and constantly hearing voices sounds like a psychotic disorder. Whether or not is sz only a psychiatrist can tell. These symptoms can be part of hypermania and schizoaffective disorder too.
Avatar f tn All psychiatrists everywhere know that medication combined with talk therapy is what works to treat schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder. Of course if someone is psychotic its harder for talk therapy to benefit them. Talk therapy can be beneficial for anyone though even someone without any diagnosed psychiatric disability. And you must remember there are two areas of understanding.
603015 tn?1329862973 It sounds like the paranoia I experienced before I recovered from schizoaffective disorder. If a person has psychotic thoughts or delusions all the time then they would be diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder (schizophrenia with a mood disorder) as I have but if these thoughts only occur during moodswings then it would be bipolar with psychotic features. This much I learned from a researcher in mood disorders. However, only a psychiatrist could diagnose you.
Avatar n tn I'm sure there are those on here who have a similar diagnosis, but isn't this something to ask your psychiatrist about this difference in diagnostic terminology? Also ask if it actually matters -- a lot of diagnoses in the Diagnostic Manual aren't meaningful to the patient, they are more for fitting into the patents for FDA approved drugs or getting reimbursement from insurance companies. Some are extremely meaningful, because they alter the treatment.
