Avatar f tn I am concerned in that because is elderly that he is being medicated for something neurological they were unable to diagnose. I had an elderly friend of the family whom my mother knew. He was in the hospital and he had some blood loss after surgery. He started talking incoherently because of this and they almost gave him Risperdal for "psychosis". Of course my mother stopped them and he did not have any "psychosis" but imagine if she hadn't.

Several years ago the geriatrics department of Johns Hopkins conducted a special seminar at Mount Sinai geriatrics center in New York specifically warning physicians of the dangers of respirdal and the inappropriateness of administration in the elderly. There are physicians who disagree with this conclusion and continue to prescribe the medication.
Avatar n tn Generally (it states this on the package insert) anti-psychotics are used with caution in people that are elderly so his psychiatrist is probably seeing whether he absolutely needs it or not. Of course if any psychotic symptoms return if a medication is adjusted or discontinued bring it to the psychiatrist's attention.
Avatar n tn I would make sure it was not neurological in origin as well because psychosis and dementia can occur in elderly people from conditions that are not psychiatric. "Impaired executive functioning" sounds more neurological in origin to me.

Diarrhea for 3 days is not a big thing to be concerned with except for staying hydrated. However, with your dad not wanting to see a doctor and probably hasn't in many years there's not much you can do. You need to convince him that if he doesn't go now his body will force him to go eventually and it may be too late.
Avatar f tn They can occur in any location within the brain. They are often incidental findings with no symptoms and with no consequences. However, when they do cause symptoms, that could include headaches, seizures, and in some rare instances psychiatric problems. If someone has a headache and an arachnoid cyst, just given the statistical probabilities, they are more likely to have a headache unrelated to the cyst than to have headaches caused by the cyst.
Avatar f tn This risk seems to be greater in elderly patients on high-dose therapy, especially females. The symptoms are persistent and in some patients appear to be irreversible. 12268405 tn?1427853361 On April 2nd I made the decision to admit myself to a psychiatric hospital due to a psychotic episode. The thing that I'm having the hardest time comprehending is if I induced the episode or not. I convinced myself that I was covered in fleas, I heard voices saying my name and calling me worthless in the past, & I experienced paranoia. I don't know what to think right now. I wish I could know if I made the symptoms worse or not...

I like ILADVOCATE had symptoms since I was a small child and had my first full blown psychotic break about a year and a half ago or longer, I'm not sure I can't keep track of this crap like this. But after I had it I have never got back up to baseline yet since and I seem to relapse easily to varying extents.
