1351968 tn?1278205300 Well there is a gradation between bipolar and schizophrenia such as bipolar with psychotic features (where a person experiences psychotic symptoms specifically during moodswings) and schizoaffective disorder, as was mentioned as I have where if untreated a person experiences psychotic symptoms at all times. Bipolar in some people can worsen over a life time, certainly if untreated and there are many subtypes of bipolar, including bipolar with psychotic features.
202665 tn?1248806733 Yes, bipolar can gradually turn into schizophrenia. The people saying this is not possible are wrong. I used to be primarily bipolar and had manic and depressive mood swings. Now (after about 6 years being primarily bipolar) I experience little to no mood swings, but hear voices daily and take high doses of niacin and antipsychotic to control schizophrenic symptoms. I have been primarily schizophrenic (though not "paranoid" schizophrenia) for about 3 years now.
12268405 tn?1427853361 I did take short term antipsychotics at first, when I was simply diagnosed as depressed with psychotic episodes. Low dose and only for a few months, which were started and removed at the discretion of my psychiatrist, depending on how I was doing. I think the key word in your description is convincing yourself that you are being covered with fleas. It could be delusional thinking and it could be a symptom of extreme anxiety.
Avatar f tn 14 is young for the onset of schizophrenia, but ... "typically begins in early adulthood; between the ages of 15 and 25" http://www.schizophrenia.com/szfacts.htm Psychosis can be caused by a number of things. What is her home situation like? Is it possible she is being abused by someone? Perhaps you can contact your local gov't childrens services and let them help her. DON'T WAIT!
Avatar n tn A person from my family went undiagnosed for many years despite strange behavior, only when she had a psychotic episode did she allow us to take her to a doctor and was diagnosed with paranoid disorder. The symptoms fit her "usual" symptoms (i.e. those she's had for years) - relatively coherent delusions of being disliked, plotted against, of her flat being bugged, someone stealing things when she's out.
Avatar n tn I had a look at the symptoms for schizophrenia and they were too acute I have never experienced these symptoms, like hearing voices, wanting to commit suicide, hallucinations etc. I have recently 2007 developed a problem with anxiety and paranoia but he wants to remit me as schizophrenic.
Avatar m tn I have been treated for psychotic depression. My Dad has schizophrenia. You sound like me before I got treatment. It is just a severe form of depression. if you had schizophrenia and were not on medication, you wouldn't have been able to write that post so it is not schizophrenia. But very treatable, so get help and do not suffer on as it will hardly get better on its own.
Avatar f tn The man in his 40s diagnosed with schizophrenia who was interviewed for our study described his use of several preventive coping strategies as follows." http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.
1256303 tn?1291752568 For schizoaffective, you have to have the psychosis part (the part A criterion for schizophrenia) for at least 2 weeks without being in the middle of a mood episode. If you only ever have psychosis while in a mood episode, then it's probably bipolar with psychotic features. But it doesn't really matter from a treatment standpoint; you'll need an antipsychotic and maybe lithium/an anticonvulsant mood stabilizer as well to control the bipolar and the psychosis either way.
Avatar f tn Jaquta - I'm not sure what I'll do if I don't like the results from the psych consult. I suppose I could just continue treatment with my primary physician, as I think he could manage my complaints. I have looked up the dsm-iv for bipolar disorder, and it definitely doesn't match my complaints.
728313 tn?1260459629 My daughter was diagnosed with MS in 2009 @ 33 years old and also was displaying psychotic symptoms. She is now in a wheelchair taking a MS med and psychotic med. If you are for real please respond back.
Avatar m tn I would suggest, for right now, you go to the Schizophrenia Forum for more accurate and in-depth information, but I strongly urge you to discuss this fear with your doctor as soon as possible. Please let us know how you're doing, OK? Please know that even if you do have schizophrenia, which I think is highly unlikely,it is totally controllable.
3579868 tn?1348739509 I know of four bipolar 1 with or without psychotic features, bipolar 2, bipolar nos, and cyclothimia. With bipolar 1 you get full blown mania and major depression, with bipolar 2 you get hypomania and major depression. cyclothimia fluctuates between minor depression and hypomania. Bipolar nos is where they put you when you obviously show some symptoms of bipolar disorder but they do not know which classification to put you in.
719785 tn?1232901518 s awfully strange he was given Prozac for those symptoms. If you have, like the first poster mentioned, psychiatrict hospital or a hospital with a adolscent psych unit, I would go there. Here's a link to the child behaviour community, teens and children's mental health is different then an adults. http://www.medhelp.
Avatar f tn It can also be a part of schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, schizophreniform disorder, shared psychotic disorder, brief psychotic disorder, bipolar disorder, substance-induced psychotic disorder. Hence it is important to consult a doctor as soon as possible. Take care!
Avatar f tn I agree with the new psychiatrist that I have all the symptoms of ADD or even ADHD, but I also have the symptoms of schizophrenia. So what is it? Or is it possible to have both? He wants to put me on a drug for ADD but from what I've read, those drugs can exacerbate schizphrenia symptoms.
774805 tn?1235948571 what is the rang between bipolarism and schizophrenia. Usually bipolarism 15 and schizophrenia is 45mg.
Avatar m tn This is a very common fear for people with anxiety disorders, but you have to understand that anxiety disorders and psychotic disorders are very different conditions, it's not like an anxiety disorder will morph into a psychotic illness. Those conditions present in their own unique way, and the diagnostic criteria are VERY different from that of anxiety disorders.
Avatar f tn , or will be diagnosed with schizophrenia, or other psychotic illness. Sometimes, certain medications can cause psychotic symptoms, or even effects of certain diseases (when a diabetic's sugar gets VERY high or very low, this can happen). What I am saying is this is definitely something she needs evaluated for. Understandably, she is going to be resistant and scared when you talk to her about this.
Avatar f tn I was wondering if someone could tell me which is better to examine someone looking for any cause of psychotic episodes -- MRI or CT scan? Also, what conditions might show up on either exam as the source of the problem? Thank you.
Avatar m tn I am sorry to hear about your medical problems. Stelazine is prescribed due to psychotic disorders like schizophrenia. So, if it was stopped, then some other medication should be started in its place. Your symptoms are probably a part of the psychotic disorder you suffer from. It is unlikely to be the side effect of medication, as any side effect of medication would stop soon after stopping the medication. It is important to get a complete psychiatric assessment to evaluate what could be wrong.
720657 tn?1233011567 You may have ocd and you may have, schizophrenia, schizoaffective or bipolar with psychotic features or something related in addition. It depends what else is going on. Speak to a psychiatrist about this specifically.
Avatar f tn I guess it all depends on the severity of the psychotic break and other such factors. I like ILADVOCATE had symptoms since I was a small child and had my first full blown psychotic break about a year and a half ago or longer, I'm not sure I can't keep track of this crap like this. But after I had it I have never got back up to baseline yet since and I seem to relapse easily to varying extents.
1044813 tn?1370494406 Seroquel (quetiapine) is an anti-psychotic medication that originally was approved for use on Schizophrenia but has shown to work for both Bipolar-Manic episode and Bipolar-Depressive episodes. It is quickly becoming a very common prescribed medication for those with Bipolar. With this medication now becoming a common and approved use I was recommending that it be added on it's own.
