Common Questions and Answers about Psychotic symptoms and treatment

psychotic

Avatar f tn I am currently recovering from a severe depression with suicide ideation in which i apparently had psychotic symptoms. Has anyone else had psychosis without knowing what it was until speaking to your therapist about what was going on? and does anyone have any advice as to what to look for in oneself when psychosis starts?
12268405 tn?1427853361 I did take short term antipsychotics at first, when I was simply diagnosed as depressed with psychotic episodes. Low dose and only for a few months, which were started and removed at the discretion of my psychiatrist, depending on how I was doing. I think the key word in your description is convincing yourself that you are being covered with fleas. It could be delusional thinking and it could be a symptom of extreme anxiety.
Avatar f tn Anyone please any insight would help me understand what is going on. I should say I can't have any feedback from my husbands Psychiatrist or psychologist because he has not authorized them to speak to me (so all I can do is to call in form time to time to give updates on his mood, but I get no feedback from them!). For the past 2 months my husband who was diagnosed 4 months ago with BP has been gradually feeling better with Depakote and Risperdal.
539694 tn?1434565947 Thanks Tyzer and Ruby but unfortunately i cannot get help.. Avatar f tn They can occur in any location within the brain. They are often incidental findings with no symptoms and with no consequences. However, when they do cause symptoms, that could include headaches, seizures, and in some rare instances psychiatric problems. If someone has a headache and an arachnoid cyst, just given the statistical probabilities, they are more likely to have a headache unrelated to the cyst than to have headaches caused by the cyst.
Avatar m tn my son is comming off very heavy doeses of hydro and other drugs, pot, lorazepan- off and on many years.. he has gone into a psychotic state, seeing and hearing things.. being very paranoid. is this uncommon?? thank you.. he is 26 years old..
Avatar f tn m scared that I will get antipsychotic-withdrawal-induced tardive dyskenisia. What are the symptoms of withdrawal and how would withdrawal TD manifest itself? Can anyone who has tapered-off antipsychotics tell me about their experience? I am also afraid that I might not be stable enough with only lithium, which would make my psychiatrist want to put me back on Seroquel, which I DO NOT want.
Avatar f tn The problem with getting a second opinion is getting one, then you become the doctor. I was given medication more suitable to a patient in greater need than my condition. Not long into this course of meds I discovered that they actual made my condition worse. Disclaimer, I'm not a doctor. Subsequently I went with the depression medication. It didn't make me feel worse but it did seem to help somewhat. That little help provided the basis of me working on my problem myself.
Avatar n tn t really matter to you that much, but if the treatment both in therapy and as to medication is different, for example needing antipsychotic drugs rather than antidepressants, then it's really important for your treatment to know. I'm guessing that having something that looks like behavior associated with those who are schizophrenic is a psychotic feature, but again, the really important thing for you to know is how this affects your treatment and your psychiatrist the one to ask.
Avatar f tn In schizoaffective disorder and bipolar with psychotic features mania and psychosis can overlap and a person needs both a working mood stabilizer and an antipsychotic and the effects overlap so that if an antipsychotic is not working properly a person can become manic and the reverse. The full spectrum from bipolar to bipolar with psychotic features and schizoaffective is not fully understood.
1647108 tn?1301275694 I have tried a few different things with no decrease in symptoms, so I am very stressed and need to get a handle on this NOW...
Avatar f tn I guess it all depends on the severity of the psychotic break and other such factors. I like ILADVOCATE had symptoms since I was a small child and had my first full blown psychotic break about a year and a half ago or longer, I'm not sure I can't keep track of this crap like this. But after I had it I have never got back up to baseline yet since and I seem to relapse easily to varying extents.
202665 tn?1248806733 Yes schizophrenia doesnt have any mood changes but there are a whole spectrum of conditions in between such as bipolar with psychotic features and schizoaffective disorder which involve both psychosis and mood changes. Sometimes certain concerns such as psychosis can increase over time become more apparent or are more in need of treatment. Bipolar with psychotic features is generally defined by psychotic thoughts or auditory or other hallucinations occuring only during mood swings..
Avatar f tn ve made a good recovery from schizoaffective which clinically is a step further than bipolar with psychotic features as in bipolar with psychotic features a person has delusions and hears voices during moodswings and in schizoaffective disorder its all the time. Even with current treatment the symptoms can be mitigated. He should have his psychiatrist follow up as to an exact diagnosis and when the onset of it was.
Avatar m tn Labs look good and it appears to be working. Check with your doctor and see if this might be a viable treatment for your husband.
Avatar f tn the diagnostic label is quite unimportant at this stage of your treatment..its the symptoms that have to be treated initially, and Abilify sounds like the right medication. There is no way to answer your question directly because the information you gave me is good, but not enough..and only a complete interview would be enough.
1965148 tn?1354978634 Hey Elinah, I have experienced two psychotic manic episodes after being put on antidepressants. They both lasted at least a week. It started out as a feeling of increased euphoria, racing thoughts, confidence boost, insomnia and impulsiveness. These symptoms progressed and got more intense as time went on, and after a few days my thoughts began to turn sinister. I started having hallucinations and hearing voices telling me to kill myself and others.
Avatar f tn There is no exact gradation between hypomania and mania and only a psychiatrist could tell but both do need treatment if they impact on a person which they almost always do.
Avatar n tn When I was younger before my diagnosis I had similar psychotic features and I was treated for major depression with psychotic features. I was treated with anti depressants and anti pyschotics. Unfortunately the anti d's triggered rapid cycling and lithium was then added to the mix. If it helps I no longer hear voices, it stopped around age 20. Now during an episode I have classic bipolar features.
1351968 tn?1278205300 Well there is a gradation between bipolar and schizophrenia such as bipolar with psychotic features (where a person experiences psychotic symptoms specifically during moodswings) and schizoaffective disorder, as was mentioned as I have where if untreated a person experiences psychotic symptoms at all times. Bipolar in some people can worsen over a life time, certainly if untreated and there are many subtypes of bipolar, including bipolar with psychotic features.
Avatar f tn I had seen a post by ILADVOCATE about a study he participated in and recovered from schizoafffective disorder. I did read that psychotic symptoms in SD may persist and felt maybe this is what my daughter is.Maybe ILADVOCATE can tell me more about this and the antipsychotic he was on. I have read that glycine helps the MNDR(I may have these letters mixed up) receptors function better and may help psychosis. Where can I get more information about glycine therapy and will medicaid pay for it?
Avatar f tn s exact titration schedule (the only way it should be done) I got some typical flu like withdrawal symptoms for a few days and then it passed over. If your psychiatrist has authorized you to change medications, ask them exactly how it should be done and what to expect.
1256303 tn?1291752568 I have schizoaffective disorder (with the bipolar aspect) and before my current recovery I had psychotic thoughts and delusions at all times (depending on my response to treatment as well of course). I do know that for schizoaffective disorder delusions and psychosis occur at all times whereas in bipolar with psychotic features they occur only during moodswings.
Avatar f tn My Psych. has me on all three, plus Klonopin, am not getting anybetter and refuse to take anti-psychotic meds.
