psychotic

Avatar m tn my 22 year old son just experienced a psychotic break. I need to understand how he was feeling. Is there anyone who has personally experienced this, and would be willing to describe what you felt? I am desperate to understand what he is going through.
1965148 tn?1354978634 I think that bipolar disorder can be with or without psychotic features. Since you seem to be having some psychosis then I would say you have it with. I think they have to observe you over time to get an acurate diagnosis. Therefor you would have to meet the diagnostic creiteria outlined in the DSM IV to recieve a diagnosis.
1351968 tn?1278205300 Well there is a gradation between bipolar and schizophrenia such as bipolar with psychotic features (where a person experiences psychotic symptoms specifically during moodswings) and schizoaffective disorder, as was mentioned as I have where if untreated a person experiences psychotic symptoms at all times. Bipolar in some people can worsen over a life time, certainly if untreated and there are many subtypes of bipolar, including bipolar with psychotic features.
Avatar f tn Yes there can be causes of psychosis other than schizophrenia or other psychotic disorders or other factors that would worsen it that are physical. A person at all times should make their psychiatrist aware of any physical disabilities or disorders they have or especially inherited tendencies in the family.
12268405 tn?1427853361 On April 2nd I made the decision to admit myself to a psychiatric hospital due to a psychotic episode. The thing that I'm having the hardest time comprehending is if I induced the episode or not. I convinced myself that I was covered in fleas, I heard voices saying my name and calling me worthless in the past, & I experienced paranoia. I don't know what to think right now. I wish I could know if I made the symptoms worse or not...
1201916 tn?1277603095 It works better than Geodon did for me but I take it for a psychotic disorder rather than a mood disorder but bipolar disorder can have psychotic symptoms and every medicine works differently for each person.
Avatar n tn As I said, when he is calm, not psychotic, he is great. One forgets that the same person can instantly turn psychotic without vitamins or meds. I do this for my son, not for me, but for him. He is blind to his problem so I am the seeing eye to help him until he is stabilized. Thank you Jaquta for your feedback. Only the person with the problem can accept or reject help.
605458 tn?1539228808 And/or just an Other, because some people take medications like the antipsychotic Seroquel for inducing sleep when a person has a mood disorder.
Avatar f tn It could also take some time to find the medication which is right for her because not every medication works the same and as effectively for every single person but chances are that one of them will work for her eventually. It could be bipolar disorder with psychotic features like ILADVOCATE said or some psychotic disorder since 120 conditions can have psychosis as a symptom.
1439426 tn?1283970705 As a person with schizoaffective before my current recovery I did. That can also occur in people with bipolar with psychotic features. Discuss this with your psychiatrist and ask if psychosis is part of your diagnosis.
Avatar f tn However, there are levels of psychosis. A person who is psychotic is usually unaware of it. I think if your psychiatrist said you had a "psychotic break" that would more indicate bipolar with psychotic features as it occurs during manic or depressive episodes only, not outside of them in which case it would be schizoaffective disorder. Ask your psychiatrist what he meant by "psychotic break" as to what was exactly psychotic. Then you can understand better.
Avatar m tn Can antipsychotics worsen depression? I mean giving antipsychotics to a person who has no psychotic features ?
Avatar n tn When a person is psychotic they can lack judgment. One of the purposes of treatment is to have them get past that point.
933174 tn?1375792553 Keep seeing the p work, psychotic, sort gets me worried. I don't see myself as psychotic. My doctor doesn't think I'm psychotic, I think he just thinks that when I'm very depressed I can get this way. I remember calling my therapist while I was in San Diego on a nightmare vacation, where the whole time I thought I had rabies or something was terriblly wrong with me. I might add, I was also on a medication for birth control called yaz, which I think contributed to the whole thing.
Avatar f tn I also get a mental image in my head of what they look like. I have Bipolar II with Psychotic Features and have hallucinated very much in the past. Is this a psychotic feature or something else?
Avatar f tn Husband diagnosed 11 months ago with BP, had a Major Manic Episode (tried to commit suicide), Psychotic/Paranoid for at least 3 months. Was on meds (Risperdal and Depakote) for only 6 months and abruptly stopped. Taking no meds now. He left home 1 months ago. He wanted to separate and there was nothing his family and I could do! The one thing that still Puzzles me is that since he was Psychotic (and of course 'making things up' I wouldn't call them lies...
Avatar n tn And if you have suicidal urges you need to see a psychiatrist right away. Depression with psychotic features is when a person has psychotic thoughts only during mood fluctuations. With schizoaffective disorder psychotic thoughts or auditory hallucinations (hearing voices) can occur at any time. But as to how to look at it I'd say look at it as I do, I am a person with a psychiatric disability and I need treatment as part of my recovery.
Avatar n tn I have been diagnosed with depression with psychotic features but every time I am hospitalized they diagnose me with schizoaffective disorder.
899491 tn?1243773627 Bipolar with psychotic features is not that rare. When a person has bipolar with psychotic features they have psychosis specifically during moodswings. When a person has schizoaffective as I do they experience psychosis all the time (as I did before my current recovery). The whole spectrum of bipolar to schizophrenia is linked up and they are just learning how.
Avatar n tn Regardless if a person has thoughts or ideas that show a strong departure from reality or reality testing that is generally considered psychotic. Mania and depression are easier to explain. If a person only has psychotic thoughts during moodswings that is generally classified as bipolar with psychotic features. That is of course treatable. See a psychiatrist you trust more and ask them why they see what they are diagnosing in you and how it can be treated.
Avatar n tn Actually if bipolar disorder has psychotic features, the person in question can hear voices from what I know. I also even knew someone with psychotic major depression who heard voices.
Avatar m tn person who is on psychiatrist medicine to become 'NORMAL' are actually 'ABNORMAL'?
Avatar f tn I recently requested information from the place I am getting help from and I was reading their off official word on me and it was Bipolar 1/MRE-manic, Severe with mood incongruent psychotic features. and Panic attack with Agorophobia. This is my diagnoses since I have seen them. I thought it was only bipolar one not all of this. Now with the Mania it never seems to let up even with the medication nor do my moods.
Avatar n tn As anti-psychotics can create diabetes and tardive dyskinesia if a person has straight bipolar (as opposed to bipolar with psychotic features where an anti-psychotic is absolutely needed) there is the potential to change to a mood stabilizer, none of which have the risk of creating tardive dyskinesia and out of all of them Lamictal has the least potential for weight gain and is generally safe and effective. Perhaps you could ask your psychiatrist about Lamictal.
Avatar m tn What is a good birth control method for someone with bipolar disorder with psychotic features? My wife recently stopped taking Depo Provera, which I believe may have contributed to yet another psychotic episode->hospitalization. We don't want any kind of permanent solution (e.g. tubal ligation), but we need a reliable method and one that won't destabilize her once we decide to have a baby.
