My pdoc yesterday told me it's possible to have a psychotic break from too severe anxiety. This scares me bad, what is that? Does that mean I'll go crazy and hurt someone? Myself? Has anyone ever had one of these? Also is there anyone here that has had several months of severe anxiety, then slowly goes back to several months of calm? I'm afraid this feeling will last forever. and some forms of bipolar have psychosis as part of this which does need an antipsychotic (for example I have schizoaffective disorder, there is also bipolar with psychotic features} to treat the psychosis. However only a psychiatrist can make a full decision about this within their clinical discretion. But it would be worthwhile to ask them specifically why they believe psychosis or any related concerns might not be occurring and why lithium alone will be able to help.
She is 42 years old and keeps landing back in the hospital with psychotic symptoms. There have been times in her life where she has functioned quite well and even worked part-time. A person from my family went undiagnosed for many years despite strange behavior, only when she had a psychotic episode did she allow us to take her to a doctor and was diagnosed with paranoid disorder. The symptoms fit her "usual" symptoms (i.e. those she's had for years) - relatively coherent delusions of being disliked, plotted against, of her flat being bugged, someone stealing things when she's out.
