He was diagnosed with Major Depression with psychotic features. He has been on 20mg of Zyprexa, 100mg of Wellbutrin, 60 mg of Prozac for three years. Is this a normal course of treatment?

Melancholic depression is honestly just the same as Major Uni-polar depression. Just a different twist on the name. The treatment options are the same as with Uni-polar depression. If I recall correctly, Melancholic depression is just like major Depression but a bit less cronic and severe. It's just an acronim that Psychiatrist use to target the actual severity of the condition. Just pretty much the same as Major depression.

PTSD involves depression. PTSD is a diagnosis, as is depression. Those with PTSD also have depression. I would say "No"...PSTD is NOT a symptom of depression. Sufferers will also experience isolation, anxiety, and in your particular case...vivid hallucinations, nightmares, and psychotic episodes. Perhaps you should talk with your healthcare provider and try an anti hallucenogenic (sp?) to help curb your visions.

As others here have commented, a real psychotic episode, which is a very serious event, must occur in order for their to be a true 'bipolar I' diagnosis. The diagnostic 'bar' for labling someone as 'manic depressive' must be high, because of the risks of the medications that are needed to control this illness, among other factors.

It is sometimes given as an add on medication for major depression. But it really is an anti-psychotic medicine for bipolar and schizophrenia, There are some 'big cautions' on the possible side effects of anit psychotic meds including abilify. If I were you, I would just stick with just an AD and find one that suits you. I don't see why in the past major depressive disorders were controlled well with just one AD .

With bipolar 1 you get full blown mania and major depression, with bipolar 2 you get hypomania and major depression. cyclothimia fluctuates between minor depression and hypomania. Bipolar nos is where they put you when you obviously show some symptoms of bipolar disorder but they do not know which classification to put you in. There is also schizoaffective disorder which can have some symptoms simmilar to bipolar disorder.

When I was younger before my diagnosis I had similar psychotic features and I was treated for major depression with psychotic features. I was treated with anti depressants and anti pyschotics. Unfortunately the anti d's triggered rapid cycling and lithium was then added to the mix. If it helps I no longer hear voices, it stopped around age 20. Now during an episode I have classic bipolar features.

if a person is diagnosed with chronic major depressive disorder and GAD and takes lexapro and trazadone, and has been receiving monthly counciling and medication reviews for over 10 years, what is the prognosis? do these patients usually present with rigid type thinking, repressed rage, concrete thinking and inability to process in an abstract manner and severe fear of intimacy?

i have been living with this for thirty years, originally misdxd with clinical depression (major depression and dysphoria) it has been only a few yers since new pdoc realised that bp was what i have been dealing with all of these years. i have brought up three wonderful children on my own and it is only now i can acknowledge this fact. my ex husband maintains llittle contact with them. his loss. i too prefer to say at home. any time i absolutely have to leave it is a major challenge.

I am 34 years old and always knew I had depression but did not realize until 2007, that I was in fact Bipolar with Major depression and anxiety? psychotic depression can encompass a wide variety of symptoms. i treat people with "psychotic depressions" a lot. Depending on what symptoms people are experiencing, different medications will be used. People will often respond very quickly to antipsychotic meds (even within days). The deeper depressive symptoms may take longer to fully resolve but that does not mean you cannot get feeling much much better relatively quickly.

Hi, I'm on quetiapine for major depression. It was added in by my p.doc ontop of first antidepressant (citalopram) which was at 60mgs daily and diazepam/temazepam. I was overwhelmed by panic and paralised by the whole depression thing. The first couple of days on (I think) 25mgs twice daily, I was completely zonked (but very calm!) after two days the tranquilised feeling left, but my sleep was restored for the first time in months and the days were better too.

So, I've been through a few ADs, but most of them were the next generation (Celexa, Lexapro, Wellbutrin, etc..) and they all increased my cycling.

Can antipsychotics worsen depression? I mean giving antipsychotics to a person who has no psychotic features ?

I have bipolar 1 with major depressive and psychotic episodes. Maybe freebird is having mixed episodes with major depression being the main trigger. This month, I have to go back to the pdoc for a meds check and I think he will be putting me on another dosage of some sorts to deal with my depression. He is adamant that the Lamictal will level me out - but the depression gets rough.

Hi I have posted a question in the heart rhythm forum but I am hoping that maybe someone will be able to help me here. There are a variety of specific types of bipolar, some where mania is the predominant feature and depression less so. Some mood stabilizers specifically treat mania better than depression so you could ask your psychiatrist about that.

I do “suffer” from long-term depression, but I have never experienced psychotic symptoms which can sometimes happen with a major depression.

It has worked better than Geodon for my negative symptoms but risperdal seemed like it was going to work even better for this but unfortunately I could not handle it. Geodon treated my psychotic symptoms better however. It doesn't work as good as I'd like it to but it's better than nothing. I could not tell you how it works for depression as I am not depressed.
