Avatar f tn Melancholic depression is honestly just the same as Major Uni-polar depression. Just a different twist on the name. The treatment options are the same as with Uni-polar depression. If I recall correctly, Melancholic depression is just like major Depression but a bit less cronic and severe. It's just an acronim that Psychiatrist use to target the actual severity of the condition. Just pretty much the same as Major depression.
Avatar n tn PTSD involves depression. PTSD is a diagnosis, as is depression. Those with PTSD also have depression. I would say "No"...PSTD is NOT a symptom of depression. Sufferers will also experience isolation, anxiety, and in your particular case...vivid hallucinations, nightmares, and psychotic episodes. Perhaps you should talk with your healthcare provider and try an anti hallucenogenic (sp?) to help curb your visions.
Avatar f tn 2) If so, would it be typical and appropriate for a patient who has never had a seizure, and has not been diagnosed with manic depression, schizophrenia, or any other psychosis? 3) Would the combination of these 4 (or 5) drugs be likely to cause a side effect of interference with thinking, memory, and speech? I ask for a family friend, who has been prescribed and is taking these all 4 of these medications daily this year.
Avatar n tn t seem to be typical Bipolar, never has had the depressions part only the manic, psychotic phase. His psych said stay on these meds two more months then he will gradually taper off and stop the Risperdone. It seems to me that it's the only one he needs, since delusions were the only major symptom. Never had the ups and downs just the hyper and delusional symptoms. Is this not what the Risperdone addresses?
1965148 tn?1354978634 As others here have commented, a real psychotic episode, which is a very serious event, must occur in order for their to be a true 'bipolar I' diagnosis. The diagnostic 'bar' for labling someone as 'manic depressive' must be high, because of the risks of the medications that are needed to control this illness, among other factors.
Avatar f tn If an elderly person is on SSRI for depression and it isn't helping and she is becoming more angry, agitated, since the med.
Avatar m tn A small study of 16 acutely depressed adults with major depression found that among the 5 whose depression improved over the 6-week period of taking 4 grams of fish oil daily (OmegaLife-3, Unicity International, Inc., providing 1,600 mg of EPA and 800 mg DHA), 80% had increases in white matter in key brain regions, compared to only 45% of those whose depression did not improve.
642393 tn?1227032656 It is sometimes given as an add on medication for major depression. But it really is an anti-psychotic medicine for bipolar and schizophrenia, There are some 'big cautions' on the possible side effects of anit psychotic meds including abilify. If I were you, I would just stick with just an AD and find one that suits you. I don't see why in the past major depressive disorders were controlled well with just one AD .
3579868 tn?1348739509 With bipolar 1 you get full blown mania and major depression, with bipolar 2 you get hypomania and major depression. cyclothimia fluctuates between minor depression and hypomania. Bipolar nos is where they put you when you obviously show some symptoms of bipolar disorder but they do not know which classification to put you in. There is also schizoaffective disorder which can have some symptoms simmilar to bipolar disorder.
Avatar n tn When I was younger before my diagnosis I had similar psychotic features and I was treated for major depression with psychotic features. I was treated with anti depressants and anti pyschotics. Unfortunately the anti d's triggered rapid cycling and lithium was then added to the mix. If it helps I no longer hear voices, it stopped around age 20. Now during an episode I have classic bipolar features.
Avatar n tn I would make sure it was not neurological in origin as well because psychosis and dementia can occur in elderly people from conditions that are not psychiatric. "Impaired executive functioning" sounds more neurological in origin to me.

1516809 tn?1345082764 My elderly mother has Alzheimer's Disease, she is 87, and recently developed elevated Liver Enzymes. Her geriatrician stopped all her meds including those for Alzheimers to stabilize her liver. Once her Liver stabilized, the doctor introduced Risperdal stating that it is less liver antagonistic. I have read much about Risperdal being fatal to the elderly but I have also read that given in low doses it is quite effective.
1037594 tn?1258562179 I am 34 years old and always knew I had depression but did not realize until 2007, that I was in fact Bipolar with Major depression and anxiety? I have been on so many different medications and yet I have not achieved the results I was hoping for or expecting. My question is how do you become interested in activities that you once enjoyed?
Avatar f tn This is my first post here so here's a little background... I've been dealing with major depression for quite a few years now. In fact, it's been bad enough that I'm considered disabled and I'm on Social Security Disabilty - and I'm only 34 yrs old. I've been on too many anti-depressants to count or remember, have done the whole ECT thing, etc; however, a few months ago I started taking Parnate and that seems to be really helping.

Avatar m tn psychotic depression can encompass a wide variety of symptoms. i treat people with "psychotic depressions" a lot. Depending on what symptoms people are experiencing, different medications will be used. People will often respond very quickly to antipsychotic meds (even within days). The deeper depressive symptoms may take longer to fully resolve but that does not mean you cannot get feeling much much better relatively quickly.
Avatar m tn Sensipar works be lessening the amount of parathyroid hormone (PTH) released by the parathyroid gland. Less PTH means less calcium and phosphorus are released from the bones. Sensipar is prescribed for secondary hyperparathyroidism in patients with chronic kidney disease on dialysis, hypercalcemia in patients with parathyroid carcinoma, and severe hypercalcemia in patients with primary hyperparathyroidism who are unable to undergo parathyroidectomy.

Avatar m tn •Valium may cause depression or worsen preexisting depression. Prior to treatment with Valium, make sure your healthcare provider knows if you are depressed or have a history of depression. People with depression should take Valium only if they are also taking an antidepressant. •Elderly people are more sensitive to the effects of Valium and should be started with a low Valium dosage.
Avatar f tn Hi, I'm on quetiapine for major depression. It was added in by my p.doc ontop of first antidepressant (citalopram) which was at 60mgs daily and diazepam/temazepam. I was overwhelmed by panic and paralised by the whole depression thing. The first couple of days on (I think) 25mgs twice daily, I was completely zonked (but very calm!) after two days the tranquilised feeling left, but my sleep was restored for the first time in months and the days were better too.
897400 tn?1303329148 Tianeptine, in dosages of 25 to 50 mg/day, has been investigated in patients with major depression, depressed bipolar disorder, dysthymia or adjustment disorder. It has equivalent antidepressant efficacy to several classical antidepressant agents (amitriptyline, clomipramine, imipramine, mianserin) and the SSRIs fluoxetine (in most patients), paroxetine and sertraline. Comparison with maprotiline indicated superior efficacy for tianeptine but dothiepin appeared superior in another study.
1134609 tn?1269272200 s not a whole lot of mood swings involved; just depression. I have read, that even after completely cessation of nicotine, major depression is very prevalent. So, I've been through a few ADs, but most of them were the next generation (Celexa, Lexapro, Wellbutrin, etc..) and they all increased my cycling.
Avatar f tn Risperidone can help some people with dementia who have symptoms such as aggression and agitation (getting upset easily). But elderly people who take this drug for dementia have an increased risk of having a stroke. Risperidone is no longer considered a safe treatment for elderly people. What is it? Risperidone is an antipsychotic drug. It is normally used to treat people with serious mental health problems like schizophrenia.
Avatar f tn Hi Pat! I know how you're feeling! I've dealt with depression for 20 some years. Don't suddenly stop the Paxil (I'm sure you know that) I finally found a new drug called Fetzima and its for depression and anxiety! You have lots of energy too!
