1965148 tn?1354978634 I think that bipolar disorder can be with or without psychotic features. Since you seem to be having some psychosis then I would say you have it with. I think they have to observe you over time to get an acurate diagnosis. Therefor you would have to meet the diagnostic creiteria outlined in the DSM IV to recieve a diagnosis.
Avatar f tn Not every breakdown is psychotic. I had a complete mental breakdown about 16 years ago or so which lead to 3 years of crushing depression - my illness course leaves me prone to this type of breakdown. However not being on meds? Dont know - i went nearly 15 years not on meds and i thought i was fine until I wasnt and went psychotic manic, so you might be fine for a long time as well. And I wasnt fine, I was hypomanic and looking back had at least 3 mini breakdowns and burnouts in that time.
Avatar n tn And if you have suicidal urges you need to see a psychiatrist right away. Depression with psychotic features is when a person has psychotic thoughts only during mood fluctuations. With schizoaffective disorder psychotic thoughts or auditory hallucinations (hearing voices) can occur at any time. But as to how to look at it I'd say look at it as I do, I am a person with a psychiatric disability and I need treatment as part of my recovery.
Avatar n tn T have a significant mental illness (specifically, a psychotic illness) is put on those kinds of medications, the outcome can be that the person ends up presenting with symptoms of a psychotic illness. I would recommend getting this sorted out ASAP, and I would ask for an inpatient hospitalization to do so, if possible. Good luck, please update the thread when you can!
Avatar f tn , or will be diagnosed with schizophrenia, or other psychotic illness. Sometimes, certain medications can cause psychotic symptoms, or even effects of certain diseases (when a diabetic's sugar gets VERY high or very low, this can happen). What I am saying is this is definitely something she needs evaluated for. Understandably, she is going to be resistant and scared when you talk to her about this.
Avatar n tn When a person is psychotic they can lack judgment. One of the purposes of treatment is to have them get past that point.
Avatar f tn For many years I have suffered from visual and auditory hallucinations, night terrors, and sleep paralysis and have even acted out nightmares while sleep walking (issuing a knife to carve into my chest). I have been on many mental illness meds but Depakote does seem to help the best even those it only seems to help to a minimum.
539694 tn?1434565947 i hallucinate and im often aware of it and i know ive been pretty paranoid and delusional for much of my life. Thing is at their extremes those are psychotic symptoms.. i dont feel psychotic im not a bad or nasty person :-( You say theres been times you felt like people could read your thoughts? Avatar m tn Hello, In November of 2009, my wife slipped into a severe psychosis, approximately 2 months after a thyroidectomy. She had no signs of mental illness before the thyroidectomy. After two weeks of taking Zyprexa, she came out of the psychosis, and has had no psychotic symptoms since. Her thyroid level is now normal, and due to weight gain, and the desire of not wanting to take medication that potentially is not needed, we have decided to stop taking Zyprexa.
1351968 tn?1278205300 No bipolar disorder will not turn into schizophrenia if not treated, the two are totally different illnesses. However, the two can sometimes be mixed up when a doctor is initially trying to diagnose someone. Bipolar disorder is an illness where the chemical inbalance in someone's brain causes their moods to be more extreme than those without the disorder. It also causes the moods to shift between the extremes (that's the difference between bipolar disorder and unipolar depression).
12268405 tn?1427853361 On April 2nd I made the decision to admit myself to a psychiatric hospital due to a psychotic episode. The thing that I'm having the hardest time comprehending is if I induced the episode or not. I convinced myself that I was covered in fleas, I heard voices saying my name and calling me worthless in the past, & I experienced paranoia. I don't know what to think right now. I wish I could know if I made the symptoms worse or not...

Avatar m tn sometimes people have psychotic episodes and then never have them again, it sounds like your pdoc thinks that you have a long term illness, the only other illness I can think of that would match your symptoms is schizophrenia, but I am not a doctor. Were you depressive at the time of this episode? I would track your illness on here, any symptoms, time of day etc.
Avatar m tn Recently I was asked to help a young man who had been taking Risperdal for a psychotic illness and who noticed that while taking this his penis and testicles seemed to shrink. There is very little information in the literature about this. We know that Risperdal causes dopamine receptor blockade. Dopamine in turn keeps prolactin levels in check. Therefore Risperdal allows for a raise in prolactin levels and this may cause genital shrinkage.
Avatar f tn My bipolar husband has become extremely controlling. I read others' posts and it's like he's being described to a T, so I guess I'm not alone.
1546631 tn?1321643204 I wanted to welcome everyone who joins this group. Thank you for joining, and I look forward to sharing the ups and downs of raising our little ones affected by childhood mental illness. I'll start with our story, my 8yo little boy has current diagnoses of psychotic disorder NOS, mood disorder NOS, and ADHD, combined type. We are pending diagnoses of Schizoaffective disorder, Bipolar disorder with psychosis. It's been a rough road, and still is.
Avatar m tn In psychiatry, the definition is necessarily more precise and implies that the belief is pathological (the result of an illness or illness process). As a pathology it is distinct from a belief based on false or incomplete information or certain effects of perception which would more properly be termed an apperception or illusion.
Avatar f tn I feel soooooooo awful, right now. I'm bawling my head off. I got a letter from my insurance company, wanting more info on how I'm doing with my 'somatization disorder'. My first really hard time with my imaginary illness began in march '05. I got steadily weaker, more tired, more stupid and more sensory ****, over a long period of time. It took a year to get to my lowest level. Being only able to walk a block with a cane. Constant pain and tiredness.
Avatar m tn This kind of follows from the treatment question I asked earlier. With treatment, I guess the ideal situation is to have a decent support team around you. I live with my family but I don't know how to even mention this to them. When I was younger, I discovered they don't really believe in mental illness so I'm currently siding on not telling them anything.
