Common Questions and Answers about Psychotic features psychosis

psychotic

1965148 tn?1354978634 I think that bipolar disorder can be with or without psychotic features. Since you seem to be having some psychosis then I would say you have it with. I think they have to observe you over time to get an acurate diagnosis. Therefor you would have to meet the diagnostic creiteria outlined in the DSM IV to recieve a diagnosis.
1256303 tn?1291752568 My second question is how do I (and of course, my psychiatrist) differentiate between whether I am bipolar with psychotic features or schizo-affective? I definitely have the cycles of mania and depression, starting about three years ago, would have auditory and visual hallucinations when severely depressed. Recently with this batch of mania, I have begun to have the auditory hallucinations too, as well as visual. I also am having some problems with disorganized thoughts and speech and delusions.
Avatar f tn ve made a good recovery from schizoaffective which clinically is a step further than bipolar with psychotic features as in bipolar with psychotic features a person has delusions and hears voices during moodswings and in schizoaffective disorder its all the time. Even with current treatment the symptoms can be mitigated. He should have his psychiatrist follow up as to an exact diagnosis and when the onset of it was.
1439426 tn?1283970705 That can also occur in people with bipolar with psychotic features. Discuss this with your psychiatrist and ask if psychosis is part of your diagnosis.
899491 tn?1243773627 Bipolar with psychotic features is not that rare. When a person has bipolar with psychotic features they have psychosis specifically during moodswings. When a person has schizoaffective as I do they experience psychosis all the time (as I did before my current recovery). The whole spectrum of bipolar to schizophrenia is linked up and they are just learning how.
Avatar f tn Depakoate is a mood stabilizer. Zoloft is an anti-depressent. Seroquel is an antipsychotic and I believe by psychiatric standards that is a subclinical dose (when I was on it 300 mg. was where it started working). Not sure what "the pill to calm her nerves" is? You mean an anti-anxiety medication? Although only a psychiatrist can determine medication dosages and which medication to use I'd suggest you inform yourself.
202665 tn?1248806733 Yes schizophrenia doesnt have any mood changes but there are a whole spectrum of conditions in between such as bipolar with psychotic features and schizoaffective disorder which involve both psychosis and mood changes. Sometimes certain concerns such as psychosis can increase over time become more apparent or are more in need of treatment. Bipolar with psychotic features is generally defined by psychotic thoughts or auditory or other hallucinations occuring only during mood swings..
222267 tn?1253302210 You have to remember that there are times where people with bipolar are euthymic (normal) in between moodswings and it sounds like you are a rapid cycler like me. What triggers off mood changes is complex. I remember years ago, way before recovery, I was on a lot of very old line meds (a standard mood stabilizer but the antipsychotic was Haldol or something similar plus a side effect pill).
603015 tn?1329862973 Yes of course like anything else. Before I recovered I would know things were not going well. I would not of course know the specifics. I would then speak to my psychiatrist. But if someone is completely psychotic they lose track of reality completely. As well a person's awareness they that have a psychiatric disability can be completely lost. I did once before I recovered stop medication and of course have to sign myself into the psychiatric hospital.
Avatar f tn I recently requested information from the place I am getting help from and I was reading their off official word on me and it was Bipolar 1/MRE-manic, Severe with mood incongruent psychotic features. and Panic attack with Agorophobia. This is my diagnoses since I have seen them. I thought it was only bipolar one not all of this. Now with the Mania it never seems to let up even with the medication nor do my moods.
Avatar f tn In schizoaffective disorder and bipolar with psychotic features mania and psychosis can overlap and a person needs both a working mood stabilizer and an antipsychotic and the effects overlap so that if an antipsychotic is not working properly a person can become manic and the reverse. The full spectrum from bipolar to bipolar with psychotic features and schizoaffective is not fully understood.
Avatar f tn Before my current recovery I had full blown mania and also had psychotic episodes (which need not go with it, I have schizoaffective disorder but there is also bioplar with psychotic features where psychosis only occurs during mood changes, in schizoaffective disorder its all the time). Things were disturbing and extreme and I needed medication as soon as I had my first psychotic break.
Avatar n tn If a person only has psychotic thoughts during moodswings that is generally classified as bipolar with psychotic features. That is of course treatable. See a psychiatrist you trust more and ask them why they see what they are diagnosing in you and how it can be treated.
Avatar f tn Is it possible for hallucinations/psychotic experiences to be like a horror film playing in your mind that you can't control? For example, yesterday, I had this mental "movie" of the grim reaper standing behind me with a wire, about to strangle me or slit my throat. Deep down I knew it wasn't real but it felt real, like a dream while I was awake, as if I could somehow sense that he was behind me ready to do something. I was totally afraid of what was going to happen.
Avatar f tn I also get a mental image in my head of what they look like. I have Bipolar II with Psychotic Features and have hallucinated very much in the past. Is this a psychotic feature or something else?
Avatar f tn Bipolar has no aspects of psychosis. With bipolar with psychotic features, during a period of moodswings (mania, depression) a person has auditory hallucinations (hears voices) or visual hallucations or has delusions (perceives things that are not in reality). With schizoaffective disorder, a person can have hallucinations or delusions even when the mood is euthymic (normal).
1039200 tn?1314912008 In schizoaffective disorder a person experiences psychosis all the time. In bipolar with psychotic features a person only experiences psychosis during moodswings so it may appear to come and go but if a person experiences psychosis then generally that doesn't go into remmission and a person needs an antipsychotic for life.
Avatar n tn And if you have suicidal urges you need to see a psychiatrist right away. Depression with psychotic features is when a person has psychotic thoughts only during mood fluctuations. With schizoaffective disorder psychotic thoughts or auditory hallucinations (hearing voices) can occur at any time. But as to how to look at it I'd say look at it as I do, I am a person with a psychiatric disability and I need treatment as part of my recovery.
Avatar f tn But it is supposed to control hearing things and paranoia because its an antipsychotic. Psychosis can exist in mixed states if someone has bipolar with psychotic features. Ask your psychiatrist what your diagnosis is and what an effective dose of Abilify would be and give it some time to build up to a proper blood level. If things get out of hand maybe he could prescribe something in the meantime to settle things until it kicks in.
Avatar f tn I am currently recovering from a severe depression with suicide ideation in which i apparently had psychotic symptoms. Has anyone else had psychosis without knowing what it was until speaking to your therapist about what was going on? and does anyone have any advice as to what to look for in oneself when psychosis starts?
Avatar f tn It could also take some time to find the medication which is right for her because not every medication works the same and as effectively for every single person but chances are that one of them will work for her eventually. It could be bipolar disorder with psychotic features like ILADVOCATE said or some psychotic disorder since 120 conditions can have psychosis as a symptom.
Avatar f tn Major Depressiom (recurent) with Psychotic features , Panic Disoder, Agoraphobia, and either Bipolar or high-functioning Schizophrenic. My panic attacks are trigged by derealizaion, depersonalizatuon, and psychosis. I began toaking Risperidone (Risperdal) for a few days. Beforre I took the medicine, I had been having psychotic breaks. For the most part, the mediine help my mind slow down, but my psychosis is bad. When I get into a qiuet room, or place that's where the ems begin.
634124 tn?1223576294 Ive tried to look up if all of these, dellusions, hallucination, the physical symptoms could all be the psychotic features of the bipolar but I havent been able to find much information. Could this all be due to the bipolar and specifically what are the physical symptoms that can manifest from bipolar psychosis. I dont know weather I need to be seeing a medicalnerologic doc or not. What seperates bipolar psychosis from schizoaffective and schizohrenia diagnosis.
1564087 tn?1308947518 d have to find out the specifics of your diagnosis as hallucinations can occur in bipolar with psychotic features (and schizoaffective disorder such as I have) and there are many subtypes of bipolar and hallucinations and psychosis can occur in some. If you have concerns about the side effects of Seroquel it would be essential to speak to your psychiatrist and discuss what other medication might not be unsafe to take as regards heart disease.
Avatar m tn Hallucinations, psychosis and paranoia can occur in some types of bipolar such as bipolar with psychotic features but only a psychiatrist would understand this in full but it would be worth speaking to one again. Emotional stress can worsen any disability so it would be worth speaking to a talk therapist as well.
