728480 tn?1312059930 Well you are talking about two different issues. First of all, psychological and Freudian theories are now considered outdated as regards psychiatric disabilities (my prefered term for mental illness). That doesn't mean people with psychiatric disabilities don't experience normal feelings that need psychotherapy. And there are complex issues.
Avatar f tn My son (19) was recently diagnosed with bipolar disorder. At time of hospitalization he refused an MRI. Subsequently he agreed and a subarachnoid cyst 6cm X 4.5 cm anterior to right temporal lobe was found. He has c/o forgetfulness, h/a, and had a severe manic episode with auditory hallucinations and paranoia. Could all this be related to his cyst? No family history of bipolar disorder. Also, what would treatment be? Surgery? Expected recovery time? What are chances mania will recurr?
Avatar f tn Before my current recovery I had full blown mania and also had psychotic episodes (which need not go with it, I have schizoaffective disorder but there is also bioplar with psychotic features where psychosis only occurs during mood changes, in schizoaffective disorder its all the time). Things were disturbing and extreme and I needed medication as soon as I had my first psychotic break.
Avatar n tn You could have depression with psychotic features or schizoaffective disorder. I have schizoaffective disorder and the mood disorder aspect is bipolar. I am recovered now with an antipsychotic in Phase II FDA study glycine as I've said on other posts but I know what the experience is like. But there are other forms of schizoaffective disorder that have depression instead of bipolar as the mood phase. And if you have suicidal urges you need to see a psychiatrist right away.
1256303 tn?1291752568 I have schizoaffective disorder (with the bipolar aspect) and before my current recovery I had psychotic thoughts and delusions at all times (depending on my response to treatment as well of course). I do know that for schizoaffective disorder delusions and psychosis occur at all times whereas in bipolar with psychotic features they occur only during moodswings.
Avatar m tn Actually I have schizhoaffective disorder and that sounds like what you are talking about. Schizoaffective is schizophrenia with a mood disorder, in my case bipolar but as you are describing depression. I would speak to a psychiatrist. Schizoaffective disorder is actually more common than schizophrenia and more easily treated. You could also have depression with psychotic features. I could explain the difference between the two but a psychiatrist could explain it.
728480 tn?1312059930 I definitely had all these feelings before recovery including what you are just describing and they are beyond anxiety disorder and strongly seem like paranoia to me. You should speak to your psychiatrist more about this.
Avatar f tn s impact on you? Or does your mother have bipolar disorder? I have recovered from schizoaffective disorder but I do have difficulties coping with my mother's bipolar disorder as she is not under treatment yet but will be. So I understand both aspects. But perhaps you could be more prescise for us as to what really went wrong.
Avatar n tn There are a variety of neurotransmitters involved. Its complex. However, as for psychosis, the thinking up until now was that the brain of people with schizophrenia was overactive in the area of dopamine receptors. All antipsychotics work by lowering the amount of dopamine. However, lowering dopamine, creates a condition clinically similar to Parkinsons' known as tardive dyskinesia which I have in severe form. That doesn't mean people shouldn't take treatment.
12268405 tn?1427853361 On April 2nd I made the decision to admit myself to a psychiatric hospital due to a psychotic episode. The thing that I'm having the hardest time comprehending is if I induced the episode or not. I convinced myself that I was covered in fleas, I heard voices saying my name and calling me worthless in the past, & I experienced paranoia. I don't know what to think right now. I wish I could know if I made the symptoms worse or not...
Avatar m tn psychotic depression can encompass a wide variety of symptoms. i treat people with "psychotic depressions" a lot. Depending on what symptoms people are experiencing, different medications will be used. People will often respond very quickly to antipsychotic meds (even within days). The deeper depressive symptoms may take longer to fully resolve but that does not mean you cannot get feeling much much better relatively quickly.
Avatar f tn I have had only 1 mild paranoid event during mania that came years after my first recognized mania, so I obviously DO NOT understand psychotic features of BP at all. But my ex-husband has had many psychotic events. He has Bipolar Disorder w/ psychotic features. He has gone into psychosis many times, and is extremely paranoid. After reading the Bipolar Child I see that he has been bipolar his whole life, and has only been diagnosed 3 months ago.
1052851 tn?1307741160 And I will add that schizoaffective disorder is schizophrenia with a mood disorder which in my case is bipolar. In schizoaffective disorder a person experiences psychosis all the time whereas in bipolar with psychotic features it is only during moodswings. You could ask your psychiatrist more about it and we have some websites linked up for information. One that's not linked up that you could find some clinically accurate information on in addition to Medhelp is Schizophrenia.
Avatar m tn What is your exact diagnosis? Olanzapine is also known as Zyprexa which is an antipsychotic. Mitrapazine is Remeron which is an anti-depressent. I would doubt an antipsychotic would be given for anxiety. So although you are on two anti-anxiety agents (Etazolam and Xanax which is the brand name for Alprazolam) you have another diagnosis, I would assume and another set of issues to deal with.
Avatar f tn My question is what is the difference between Bipolar disorder with psychotic features and Schizoaffective disorder? And which one sounds closest to what i am experiencing, if it's possible to answer?
1351968 tn?1278205300 Well there is a gradation between bipolar and schizophrenia such as bipolar with psychotic features (where a person experiences psychotic symptoms specifically during moodswings) and schizoaffective disorder, as was mentioned as I have where if untreated a person experiences psychotic symptoms at all times. Bipolar in some people can worsen over a life time, certainly if untreated and there are many subtypes of bipolar, including bipolar with psychotic features.
Avatar n tn As a person who has made a full recovery from schizoaffective disorder with glycine, a glutamate antagonist, a new form of antipsychotic in Phase II FDA study that has a full recovery rate as well as a more favorable long term side profile I can testify to that and have publicly (my study will be published in a psychiatric journal, for the general study google "Dr. Javitt, glycine). You need mental health treatment and that does include medication.
1201916 tn?1277603095 It works better than Geodon did for me but I take it for a psychotic disorder rather than a mood disorder but bipolar disorder can have psychotic symptoms and every medicine works differently for each person.
720657 tn?1233011567 That sounds more like "feelings of unreality" which I have had before recovery from schizoaffective disorder and may be a form of psychosis. I have obsessive thoughts at times (I may very well have ocd) but in the past I was told that the obsessive thoughts masked psychosis which was obviously a problem for me before my current recovery with the Phase II antipsychotic in FDA study (for more information google "Dr.
603015 tn?1329862973 Hypomania is distinguished from mania by the absence of psychotic symptoms. In other words if there are psychotic features its mania. BP2's can get psychotic features in mania the same as anyone does. Is this what you are referring to on the Black Dog Site ?
Avatar m tn in short, I use to do drugs, marijuana, ketamine, mephedrone, speed. I stopped because marijuana gave me very severe panic disorder.. which 2 and a half years later I'm still suffering with, no where near as badly though, it's more like anxiety disorder now. Anyway i was clubbing yestarday, was kind of anxious because I always am, don't go out much because of anxiety etc etc. and I was drinking, I was not drunk, maybe slightly tipsy.
Avatar m tn I was diagnosed with a psychotic disorder instead of a mood disorder, but I get the "I wouldn't know if you didn't tell me" thing as well with my mental illness even though I act weird and end up confusing people with my hallucinations along with my other psychotic symptoms. Well... there are some people who realize I have a psychotic disorder or I'm "crazy" before I told them, because of the above, but I also go through this as well.
Avatar n tn Schizoaffective disorder is schizophrenia which a co-existing mood disorder which in my case is bipolar disorder. However, the American Psychiatric Association is considering a new criteria which is "schizo-obsessive disorder" and regardless obessive behavior can occur in schizophrenia so it has aspects of both.
Avatar f tn 14 years old is indeed young but it might be psychotic episodes or something somehow leading to bi-polarity as it could be and it is very likely, that is is schizo but at this age who knows if she's just shizotypal or schizoid, well you wanna know if it's a personality disorder or a psychotic disorder. In females real psychotic disorders tend to appear later than in men, who are starting to get symptoms between adolescence and early adulthood.
